😍 BACK TO THE ROOTS PAYS OFF! 😍

Over fours years ago, I started Fatpigeon.cc and left a corporate career as Civil Engineer behind me.

Back then, I was recovering from a burn-out and worked on Fat Pigeon as a fun side project. Everything changed when I went on a gravel bike trip in search of the most elevated ‘rideable’ peaks in the Alps.

Whilst rewardingly suffering on these breathtaking roads on the Italian-French border, something very special happened. After months and months of feeling depleted and down, some magical form of energy returned within a couple of days.

From that moment onwards, I was 100% sure that this is it. I physically felt a change, pulling me out of a mental struggle.

Last week, I went back to these roads for riding the , a 1.000km non-stop event which covers 26.000m of brutal climbing (don’t worry, I did stop as much as I could within the 7-day time limit in order to maximise joy).

Yes, it’s insane to have reached 2.1 million people on Instagram this month. And yes, the footage .photography and I shot is out of this world. But the most important thing for me is the way this adventure has made me feel.

The insane level of freedom, joy, suffering and adrenaline form the perfect cocktail with the lovely like-minded people you meet at such an event and the valuable media I can create and distribute for partners as , , , and .

Worked hard to reach one of my main goals this year: finishing LAST at .

After I finished this 1.000km / 26.000m+ dream route, legendary also finished within the time limit, lighting a cigarette upon arrival 🤯

All jokes aside: super proud to have pulled of this challenge, that has been on my bucket list since starting .cc 5 years ago.

Finally touched down at the start line in Pinerolo, 🇮🇹 after a first and last experience with .

Friday evening at 10pm, I take off with 35 others to cover the most beautiful, breathtaking, but also brutal roads of the Alps.

The route covers 1.000km with 25.000 meters of elevation. But that will ‘just’ be the scenery of a story I’m going to capture with the help of

As a kid, I wore football jerseys and dreamed of being stars like Batistuta and Zidane. Today, my inspirations have evolved, and they’ve traveled overseas.

This story starts in 2021 at a Kenyan National Park. Amidst wildlife and an intense maiden , I encountered the incredible sportsmanship and on & off bike power of Sule Kangani with his squad.

These athletes are fierce competitors in every breakaway, yet we’ve shared countless start lines across the globe—from in Spain, underground racing in The Netherlands, Sweden and many more.

Team Amani is redefining the world of cycling. Their energy, athleticism, and perseverance keeps inspiring me over and over again. I’m humbled and thrilled to don their kit, thanks to my friends at , for the upcoming .

I can’t wait to channel my inner on the climbs and on the singletracks!

‘grandpa’s on pavement nationals’ 👴🏼

“Where fun is fast”: spend the day in the trenches of the Dutch Road Nationals for guys over 30 y/o.

Went there purely to race side to side with my mates again, after a loooong long time. Especially with yesterday’s wedding of my dear sister in my system, I just wanted to have fun.

The legs responded relatively well on yesterday’s Champagne, wine, beer and ‘EsMa’s’. Guess my body is fully adapted to the gravel lifestyle after all these years!

These Dutch Nationals couldn’t have been more Dutch: super fast, super windy and super rainy (again). I love crosswinds, rain and the feeling of being on the hunt with the lads. CHAOS!

After a solo breakaway and a longer breakaway with 2 little guys (compared to my length), I was pretty happy with my legs. Eventually, 3 of our 5 man squad made it in the final 12-man break with about 10km to go.

Had fun, suffered a little bit and got dirty. Time for some recovery now and work towards the gravel goals for the second half of the season 🥰

Things have come full circle…

When my mom died from a brain tumour in 2009, my dad and I felt powerless and decided to join a charity event the next year

So we went to in Arnhem, bought my first bike and started riding. The event we joined in 2010 is called and proved to be a key part of our mourning process

On that mountain in the French Alps, we met dozens of lovely people with similar stories. The emotions were high, but so was the positivity, the energy and the insane amount of determination amongst the participants

Fast forward to today, 15 years later, cycling has become my life and my religion. It is showing me the world, making me the strongest version of myself and is providing the best friendships ever!

Last week, while captured me doing my thing during and , I witnessed that immense force from up close again. You could feel some sort of special fire being ignited among those riders

To raise funds for the Children Cancer-free Foundation, riders with all sorts of backgrounds and stories conquered the Italian Alps and Dolomites. IN-SANE to feel the energy of people on a mission

😏 IT’S ULTRA TIME 😏

The first ultra of this year was supposed to be 560, which unfortunately got cancelled for obvious reasons.
-
Luckily this year is full of , with the next one starting in a couple of hours. Therefore I like to take the opportunity to look back on this 2022 Ardennes Monster Ultra.
-
The ‘Monster’ is organised by my friend Oliver of and so is the , in which I’ll start tomorrow.
-
Both ultras are in the Ardennes and brutally challenging. But the ‘Hardennes’ version is offroad, on some of the gnarliest tracks the Ardennes have to offer!
-
This 2022 road edition still is one of many highlights in my with . The 60 hours on the bike resulted in over a 100 epic stories, which we still regularly share today
-
Like the one of my earplug being stuck, deep inside my ear. Mainly the story of the ghetto ‘surgery’ that followed is interesting and highly inappropriate for underaged viewers.
-
We didn’t bring any regular clothes, so both fully naked I sat down on the toilet with a closed lid. Rombi used his sharp steel tyre plugging tool to whip the earplug out of my ear.

Despite the highly intimate experience (which we only realised afterwards), we still add the letter B to our romance…

It’s Wednesday evening, which means I’m 34hrs away from the start of (700km/11.000m+)
-
A very wise man once said “Chickity-check yo’ self before you wreck yo’ self”.
-
This does not only apply to yourself, but also to your bike.
-
The ultra I’m about to start is the offroad brother of , in which my mate and I finished as first pair in the first edition of the event.
-
This offroad brother isn’t your average walk in the park:
40% road
20% gravel
15% hard gravel
15% single track
10% technical single track
-
Combined with the forecasted rain in addition to the 💩 load that aready came down, it’s going to be ROUGH
-
Tried to pack the bike as complete as possible and went for a ROUGH test ride. The setup might look similar to what I rode in Spain last weeks, but ‘under the hood’ there are a lot of changes!
-
Therefore testing and adapting is crucial. Especially when you’re planning on riding off the grid and in the dark. You need to have full faith in your bike in order to keep the spirits high!

On the go I took ‘some’ stills as well. 200 of them eventually made the cut and got edited before sending them to the clients.

These 10 didn’t survive the final round of selection, but I somehow still like them in some kind of way. Feels like even with these ‘misfits’, the vibe of our shared adventure can be shown.

🫡 LAST STAGE LOADING 🫡

Woke up in a Yurt of for the second night in a row. Took some time yesterday to get the in top shape again to get me to the finish of this bikepacking adventure today.
-
The finish of this part doesn’t mean it’s the end! I arrive in the mountain town of Vielha tonight (if all goes well). This town lies in the most North-West corner of , which is the Catalan part of the Pyrenees.
-
As I said, it will be the finish of this tour, but will be the START of the next adventure. This Friday I’ll start Across Catalunya. This 400km event will take us on a brutal ride across the high mountains and to the sea at the other side of .
-
So right after crossing the South of the region whilst bikepacking, I’ll be doing a North crossing whilst ‘racing’ and creating the media for the event.

The bike was packed, the carbs were loaded. The heavily packed, but bomb proof Kanzo Adventure just needed a race number mounted to conquer 560km.

On my way to get her that bib, I got the message that the event is postponed by a day, due to safety measures around the severe weather.

Gotta be adaptable to change, in order to survive. Grabbed the perfect opportunity to go for some drinks with the endless amount of friends in Girona.

Together with 50 gravel aficionados, friends, pro’s and other legends, we battled our way through the unpaved pearls of Belgium’s Hageland.
-
In a little over 2hr time, we shared the most epic stories and made sure to create some more on the go. Barbed wire, single speeding, MTB tracks and full gas sectors were some of the main subjects.
-
Upon arrival at the HQ, it was time for a lovely mix of , and laughter amidst Ridley’s most beautiful (released and unreleased) pieces of art.

Weekend well spent:

Solid weekend with the lads, combined with some proper training rides ahead of the 560km Traka Adventure.

Felt super strong today, so when I got to my hometown of Eindhoven at about 230km, I decided to join the gruppetto.

Despite feeling strong the whole day, it felt like walking lego barefoot for the final two hours. Averaged 41.2km/h with two other lads, but all I could do was some sandbagging.

Time for food and some more food. And after that: food. Luckily surprised me with some of my favourite snacks upon arrival.
