Our latest issue, the themanummer, is out! 🚀

It wasn't difficult to pick a theme for this issue (which is connected to the symposium we hosted in June and July). Violence has been all around us lately.

For this reason, we decided to "strike back" and we did it in our own Splijtstof way.
In this issue, we looked at violence from many different points of view.
There's a column written by , an interview with Heleen Murre-van den Berg about the "sociale veiligheid" dossier at out own faculty, an interview with , a piece on veganism, another about anarchy in the UK, and much much more!

A few weeks ago, we heard the news that events would be allowed again from June 30. Since we didn't want anyone to find themselves in a conundrum and having to choose between our symposium and a nice party, we decided to move the last symposium date to July 7.

On Wednesday July 7 (20.00-21.30), Lonneke Peperkamp will give a talk on just war theory and the morality of ecological intervention. After the talk, Lonneke will be interviewed by Sophia de Vries and there will be time for Q&A.

Violence as Situation, Violence as Discourse

Tonight at 20:00 CEST, Sabine Luning (Leiden University) and Seth Bledsoe (Radboud University) will engage in a conversation about violence, a topic that is very much urgent and of paramount importance given the recent events (worldwide and close to home).

Dr. Luning will address the question as to whether, and if so how, anthropological fieldwork may deal with violence: "One major characteristic of anthropology is that it seeks to question stereotypes and commonsense assumptions. An anthropologist might ask how to define violence? How is violence by the state different from other forms of violence? How do people judge which violence is good and bad?"

Dr. Bledsoe will continue this conversation focusing on “violence” as a discourse: "Who claims that a certain phenomenon is or is not violent, how do they make such claims, and why?"

These short talks will be followed by an interview and Q&A.

This event is part of a three-part symposium on violence, organized by Splijtstof. The event will be held fully online and participation is open to all.

As chairperson you are the one to keep an eye on the activity of the board, to know what's going on and to make sure everything is going as smoothly as possible. You are also the contact person for official business. Apart from the regular activities, you occasionally take on other duties.

Because Ilaria is leaving us, Splijtstof is looking for a new editor-in-chief!

As editor in chief you are responsible for the content of the issues from start to finish. You organize and lead regular meetings with the other editors, you motivate them and check on their progress, you take care of promoting the magazine together with the social media editor, you organize events (such as the yearly symposium), and you take care of the visual content of the magazine together with the visual editor and the web editor.

Did you know that Ancient statues were not white at all?
It is quite hypocritical, if you think about it, that one of the founding fathers of art history claimed that color does not matter while, at the same time, he declared that white marble classical sculptures were the embodiment of ideal beauty.
Would our ideas of beauty and art be any different if the statues were polychrome?
