Abū Yazīd al-Basṭāmī (d. ca 234/848), popularly known as “Bāyazīd”, remains one of the most celebrated yet controversial figures in the history of Islamic mysticism. This new, in-depth study by Annabel Keeler draws from early sources to explore his family, education, disciples, and memorable sayings. It examines his views on the mystical path, God, the Prophet, and his community, as well as his bold, sometimes contentious expressions and spiritual miʿrāj. The book also traces his profound influence on later Sufism and its literature. Find out more: https://brill.ws/sufi9_

On August 3, 2014, the Sinjar region of Northern Iraq was attacked by the “Islamic State”. Killing and abducting thousands, the jihadists also destroyed many of the religious minority’s shrines. Others, however, were defended by local fighters and groups affiliated with the PKK. In the aftermath of the genocide, stories of divine intervention into the defence bolstered land claims of serveral Kurdish political groups. Through extensive fieldwork in the region, Benjamin Rassbach's fieldwork traces imaginaries of Sinjar as a landscape of resistance and a communal history of continuous persecution to current political disputes and attempts to construct a unified Yezidi identity.
