This week, Daniëlle Slootjes and Lee Brice hosted the Brill Workshop on Warfare in the Ancient Mediterranean at the University of Amsterdam. Michael A. Speidel, editor of the forthcoming Pauly Supplement on Greek and Roman Military History (www.brill.com/bnps), held the keynote lecture. It has been marvellous to watch 2 Brill companions on warfare being composed and discussed and many others planned.

Begun in 2010 and now published in three thick tomes on a combined 2,000 pages: Karl Enenkel’s edition of Erasmus’s Apophthegmata is a true Herculean labor. This magnum opus offers a commented critical edition of books V–VIII of Erasmus’s Apophthegmata, the most successful early modern collection of memorable sayings and anecdotes. Enenkel’s erudite 200-page introduction analyses the genre of apophthegmata in antiquity as well as the genesis, composition, sources and particularities of Erasmus’s work.

As we do today, the Greeks and Romans struggled to communicate their pain: this required a rich and subtle vocabulary which had to be developed over time. "Pain Narratives", edited by Jacqueline Clarke, Daniel King, and Han Baltussen, traces the development of this language in literary, philosophical, and medical texts from across antiquity: poets, physicians, and philosophers contributed to an ever-growing lexicon to articulate their own and others’ feelings.

Just published and available for trial: 'Encyclopedia of Greek Language and Linguistics Online'. This is a thoroughly revised expansion of the previously published 'Encyclopedia of Ancient Greek Language and Linguistics', now encompassing the entire history of Greek: from Proto-Greek to modern times.

The Encyclopedia of Greek Language and Linguistics Online is the culmination of many years’ efforts by over 400 scholars. It provides an authoritative and comprehensive treatment of all important aspects of the language in its 3,500-year documented history, offering a systematic overview of the language on all levels and from many different angles and theoretical traditions.

About 65% of the content is completely new, while the remaining 35% consists of revised and expanded entries from the Encyclopedia of Ancient Greek Language and Linguistics. The Encyclopedia of Greek Language and Linguistics Online launched in April 2024 with around 25% of the total content. Completion is expected in 2025. More info: http://brill.ws/gllo_
