We make books, magazines and prints. By working together with artists, we show and connect different artistic worlds.

Founded in 2017, Chemistry is there to connect different artistic worlds with a main focus on art and photography. We are an independent company with a universal mindset but based in the small city of Leeuwarden, the Netherlands. Our main focus is to make books, magazines and prints with an eye on detail and quality. We are working together with or commissioned by artists or companies, and by work

ing together with local craftsman, company’s and suppliers we try to give a human touch to the products we make. Most important for us is that we are collaborating with artists and companies with the same positive mindset as we protect.

DIRTYKICS - LIKE ME AND YOU

On commission for publisher Tourdogs, we produced this zine containing photos shot in the streets of the rust belt city- Toledo, Ohio. All photos were taken by James Dickerson ()

This is the fourth magazine we produced for in which we also help with sales in Europe. 15 zines are available through our webshop.

In addition to the magazines we publish in collaboration, we also work on commissioned magazines and fine art prints. Furthermore, we can help with sales in Europe in case of artists living overseas.

LAAG WATER

During the residency with New Zealand based visual artist Ed Bats, he made two paintings and we worked on a hand-embellished fine art print.

‘Laag Water‘ is 80 x 100 cm (31,5’‘ x 39,4’’) and is made with aerosol, acrylic paint and industry markers on linen.

NEW ZINE RELEASE

A spread from the zine we released in collaboration with visual artist

Guido’s 5MM zine explores creativity through 5-mm grids - drawing without pressure, using only verticals and horizontals. This 36 pages zine capture moments of reflection, balancing contrasts like routine and spontaneity.

The zine is limited to 150 copies (first 25 signed), and is a warmup for Guido his dream project: a full book of grid sketches.

5MM ZINE

In collaboration, we are releasing a zine next week with a selection of work from the 5mm project. Today, Guido signed a number of zines at his studio in Utrecht, the Netherlands. The hand-bound zine is made in an edition of 150 of which the first 25 are signed by the artist.

ED BATS - OH PALM WHAT TOU READ

Two weeks back we hosted our first residency and invited New Zealand based artist to our studio.

During the residency we worked on 2 paintings, 30 hand-embellished fine art prints and a zine.
 This A5 magazine consists of 44 pages and to create the zine we used different papers & printing methods and made a paper sleeve with a hand painted detail.

The hand-embellished fine art print is 50,0 x 70,0 cm (19,69” x 27,56”) and is made in an edition of 30 + 5 AP’s. All prints are signed & numbered by the artist.   The set is now available 🚨

A.I.R. - DAY 03

On the third day of his artist in residence in our studio, Ed Bats put the finishing touches on several collages and started on two paintings.

One of the collages will eventually become part of a hand-embellished fine art print that we will release in an edition of 30 + 5 AP’s.

THE FAR SITE

Alongside the book edition, we released a print edition of The Far Site featuring a gelatin silver print made from a black and white photograph of legendary “Paninaro” yard in Rome.

The whole printing process was carried out brilliantly by darkroom printer Matteo Alessandri from .works. This refined print captures the timeless essence of traditional film photography. The meticulous process of exposing, developing and fixing the image ensures each print embodies a unique, enduring quality.

The print set comes in an edition of 30 + 5 AP’s and is available at .publishing

ARTIST IN RESIDENCE

In October, we are hosting an artist in residence with New Zealand-based artist Ed Bats. During this one-week collaboration, we will work together on several projects and will release a fine-art print as part of the outcome.

, who began as a graffiti artist, combines hard-edged abstraction with minimalism, creating works that push the boundaries of form and composition. His art, characterized by meticulous layering and reworking, often incorporates second-hand furniture and household items. This approach results in pieces that blur the lines between painting, sculpture, and installation, showcasing his deep love for design and craftsmanship.

WILLIE VELAQUEZ - YOU’RE NOT ALONE

Marc David’s passion for drawing letters stems from his graffiti background, which focuses on experimenting with letterforms. For Marc David Sketchbook, he hand-drew all the text to match the energetic style of his sketches.
