Vinyl Recorder automation part 1.

As this machine is super mechanical and labour intensive, it’s time to add some modern technology to the existing machine. When I’m done It’s able to pretty much autonomously make one side of a record.
- bring the head to the edge of the record
- lower the head and start cutting
- do the grooves between tracks (it can do this already)
- finish the record
- raise the head
- and finally return to start position.

Still a long way to go but I figured out the positions for the limit switches. They’re taped to their position now but a more solid way of mounting will be needed though 😬.

.rooks Just released his next single called ‘Human Kind’ on all major streaming services

Some details on the analog recording process below.

It will be available as a vinyl single as well, so either hit me up or .rooks for that.

This was a blast to produce and mix!
Featuring .rooks on vocals and guitars, .haaksma on bass, on backing vocals, on tenor and baritone sax and on trumpet and trombone. I played drums on this one.

We took on the challenge not to go digital until the very last moment.

The basics were tracked on my Otari 1” 8 track multitrack. This meant playing the guitar, bass and drum parts together. And overdubbing some extra guitars.

Oh no, no more tracks to use!

This meant doing a so called reduction mix.
- mix the recorded tracks to stereo.
- record this on another machine (my revox g36 tube deck)
- fast forward the multitrack deck to a spot that’s not used
- record back to the multitrack from the revox.
-phew. Made it.

Tahdaa! 2 tracks used, 6 to go for vocals and brass. No we could properly finish up the track. It’s tough but worth it!
