University politics is not necessarily a topic that is talked about a lot. However, it is of crucial importance. We as students quickly forget that we do have a say. This means that we have the right to voice our opinions and complaints, which then should be reflected in the behavior of the institution. Yet if we wish to see changes in the way our university behaves, we need to get involved. This week RUG students get the chance to elect the people that are going to represent our desires. From May 14th until May 17th, 2024, the University Council and Faculty elections are being held.

Last week, I had the privilege to conduct an interview with two candidates, representing the party of  Lijst Calimero. Roudina Elgrabl and Chris Csölle answered the following questions: Why is it important for students to get involved in student politics? And what is the vision and goals that Lijst Calimero has for the RUG?

Last Monday, Supergiant Games released their first sequel in Hades II, a follow up to the Greek God-fest which sold over a million copies in its first two years. The game releases in ‘Early Access’, meaning it will be tweaked and improved over time, but the development team have promised at least as much content as the first game upon release.

A while ago I spoke to Darren Korb, audio director and composer at Supergiant Games, about his past, process, and passion.

Earlier this week, I sat down with Youssef and Matej, the chairman and head of external affairs, respectively, of the new student association Amicus Civitas. We discussed the up-and-coming association that began in February of this year to build an exhilarating university experience for all Groningen students. This is what they had to say.

Welcome to the Student Blog, where other writers and I report about typical student life. This week we touch upon the topic of “food” as a student.

Moving to a new city comes with many challenges. As new arriving students, we first are faced with the extremely difficult task of finding housing. Once we have managed that, we need to adapt to a new environment, make friends, keep up with school and ultimately find a balance between personal life and university life. In general, we can say that the students of Groningen have a lot on their plate.

Nevertheless I wish someone had told me that one of the biggest difficulties of being an independent student would be to manage to cook three meals a day. Eating seems to be the ultimate challenge. Luckily, I am not the only one that struggles with this, as till this day I have not met a student that has optimal eating habits. But honestly, fair enough, who has the time and creativity to come up with three meals a day.

Hi, I’m Brunella, a young international girl living in Groningen and curious to know the everyday nature of the inhabitants of this city. One thing connects all human beings, regardless of gender, color, class, or sexuality, and that is the need to question everything and seek comfortable answers–as irrational as it might be. So, that’s how this series called Bike Stories began: where I ride my bike, find strangers, and interview different people with a question essentially related to what makes them ordinary humans.

This week’s theme: Change. Change can sometimes be scary to us. We like stability and predictability and sometimes, we like these more than change. I was pondering many important decisions this week – decisions that would create big changes in my life – so this question crossed my mind. I decided to ask two people whose answers I thought could help me discover my own. So, I met up with them for coffee and asked them the following question: What is one thing you wished you could change about yourself? Here I present their answers.

On 4/20, while groups of students competed to see how much grass they could smoke to celebrate the unofficial holiday, Het Resort hosted the exhibition Long grass, short life at the Piccardthof. Here, among other things, people could experience THE REST, where Lily Dollner buries and unburies herself in a mound of dirt. This was the last day she would do it; having done it 4 times already within 3 days.

So, that’s how this series called Bike Stories began: where I ride my bike, find strangers, and interview different people with a question essentially related to what makes them ordinary humans.

This week’s theme: Death. As everyone at some point does, I have experienced near-death experiences in my short life. It is truly a weird sensation to live through these, as you don’t often realize how afraid you are about death until she is right there in front of you, slowly waving and inviting you to join her. Reminiscing on my relationship with death, or my lack thereof, this week I decided to approach two people who I thought would have the death thing figured out. I am not sure what inspired me to take upon this huge assumption, but I decided not to think too deeply about it as I did not precisely want to waste more time being afraid of confronting this subject face-front. So, I approached these people and I asked them the following question: What do you think happens to us after death? Here I present their answers.

Gravitating more toward experimental music, he finds a home in “that unnerving weird jazz stuff that doesn’t let you sit easy in your chair; that you have to actively listen to to enjoy.”

When Ingo speaks, he often stops to qualify what he’s said, in measured consideration of his words. Everything takes time to come out, though filled with meaning when it does. By contrast, when he’s playing music, every sound comes out sure and smooth. The mark of a real musician - someone who doesn’t just communicate through music, but who communicates best through music.

It’s the 9th of December. Protesters on the Grote Markt wave signs and chant voraciously between the Martini Church and City Hall. Around the circle of protesters the oliebollen cart and a towering Christmas tree have been erected in the square to mark the season.

“Israel is a terrorist state!”

This was the same chant uttered at central station on the 7th, which triggered action by police.

As Black Friday approached, I, like many others, started to create a mental list of things that I hoped to find at a discounted price. From kitchen utensils to children’s toys, make-up products to computers, Black Friday is the one day of the year when you can expect to purchase your favorite items at a magically lower price than any other time.

There’s no shame in looking forward to this day, as our minds are constantly being bombarded with targeted ads of things we don’t need, but are nonetheless hard to ignore. However, we often forget about the real cost behind these extremely cheap products, as well as the pressure it puts on people.

Please also mention the name of your association plus the name of your photographer.
Entries can be submitted until the 19th of November.

It’s that time of the block again: you’re in the final three weeks, and have deadlines and exams o’ plenty. Your room, although nice, is becoming a bit too small for your liking, and maybe you’re finding it hard to focus. Let’s get you out of there!

The first places you think of are probably the Forum or the University Library. Of course, the Hanze has many study places on the Zernike Campus as well, but maybe you’d rather go to a place a bit more comfortable and cosy. Here are five places you can go to instead.
