In "Kasbi," directed by Farah Jabir, we see the story of Maryam, a middle-aged Pakistani woman who, after years of internal struggle with her s*xual identity, decides to embark on a journey of self-discovery. She steps into this unknown path to unearth and confront the self she has long suppressed, aiming for either acceptance or rejection. This is the greatest challenge Maryam has chosen to face because she must shed the societal and familial constraints, and the self-image imposed by society, to allow her true self to breathe.

“The Other Way Around” review

“The Other Way Around” is based on the absurd idea that “couples should celebrate separations rather than unions.” This concept, as an idea, can be brilliant and is a good premise for making a film. Alejandra (Itsaso Arana), who is a director in the film, tells her partner Alex (Vito Sanz), who presents the idea of “De-coupling” and celebrating it, quoting Alejandra’s father in the opening scene. This idea, for the two main characters—one a director and the other an actor—is intellectual, different, and avant-garde. However, for the norms, society, and the couple’s acquaintances, it is a serious trauma.

'The Story of Souleymane' review

In his Cannes Un Certain Regard competition title "The Story of Souleymane," Boris Lojkine portrays the story of an asylum seeker from Guinea who has two days to prepare for his asylum interview with OFPRA (the French Office for the Protection of Refugees and Stateless Persons).

Souleymane, undocumented and working as a food delivery cyclist, pedals through the streets of Paris with a heart full of anxiety and worry. Struggling unsuccessfully to prepare for an interview that means life or death for him, he relies on a story he bought for his asylum application.

'Universal Language’ (آواز بوقلمون) review

“Universal Language” (آواز بوقلمون), directed by Canadian filmmaker Matthew Rankin, premiered on May 18th in the Directors’ Fortnight held in parallel to the 77th Cannes Film Festival.

Rankin, known for his films showcased at major events such as Sundance, SXSW, Annecy, TIFF, the Berlinale, and Cannes Critics Week, brings a film that is both imaginative and rich in symbolism, continuously surprising its audience. “Universal Language” is a dark comedy blending absurdism and grotesque elements within its characters and subplots.
