// About Komodo: A Paradise Under Pressure //

In 2017, VR Gorilla followed a team of scientists and divers to create a film on their quest to study Indonesia’s iconic manta rays and Komodo dragons, and how plastic pollution is threatening their survival. The film, which is a Watermen Project and Blend Media collaboration, takes you on an incredible journey through the waters and islands of Komodo National Park; a unique ecosystem situated in the Indonesian archipelago.

World record freediver and Ocean Explorer William Winram William Winram, together with his protégé marine biologist Lukas Müller , go to extreme lengths to show you the beauty of the park and some of its iconic inhabitants, including the deadly Komodo Dragon and the giant Reef Manta Ray.

During their dives they assist Nat Geo’s “Queen of Mantas” Andrea Marshall Andrea Marshall who is researching the manta ray population in the Park.

This project would not have existed were it not for Dr. Andrea Marshall from the Marine Megafauna Foundation Marine Megafauna Foundation and her generous donor who put her boat at the service of the oceans in this project.

Once they were viewed as dragons, mythical animals that roamed the islands of Komodo national park: The Komodo dragon. These giant lizards were already living on earth about 40 million years ago, sadly only in our age their existence has come under threat of extinction.

If you come to Komodo to film the mantas and the park they of course have to be one of the main characters. Though it is not a small feat as Komodo dragons can be very dangerous to humans. They have no fear of humans and will bite if they get the chance, filling the wound of their victim with poison.

So if you do want to film them, you have to do it right and be extra careful. Luckily the people from Watermen project Watermen Project, who were handling the cameras, were experienced in working with big predators, (like great white sharks). They did an amazing job filming them in the water, (as we were all holding our breath worrying about them 😉 An we even managed to get a camera on the beach, which now allows you to stand in the middle of their group in VR.

One more day and you'll be able to experience it in VR yourself 😀

Being in the presence of a manta-ray is one of the most serene and spiritual encounters we have ever experienced. There is just something peaceful and elegant about them, the way the glide through the water, slowly flapping their big wings.

So we were overjoyed when on the fifth day of shooting William Winram came to the surface and told us they had run into an very seldomly filmed and amazing event. A manta dance, a mating ritual in which multiple manta rays try to seduce a female. It is beautiful and they got it all on the VR cam, even though the conditions were hard, with strong currents and Manta's passing them by from every side. Once we saw the moment in our post production studio, it was clear we got very lucky and it is so cool to be able to share this with the rest of the world coming monday. Such beauty...

Once we arrived in the park we were excited to start filming the animals and beauty of the park, but quickly found that the paradise that we were looking to film was slowly fading and that being there also had a dark reality to it: There was plastic all around the islands, and the iconic Komodo dragon was living in it as were all the animals in the waters surrounding it.

The researchers explained to us that even though you might not be able to see these microplastics with your naked eye, they are there and they are slowly suffocating the oceans and animals in it.

From that moment on we knew we had to incorporate the story of plastics into our film. Just showing the beauty would not do justice to the animals in park, and with this film we had a chance to create a bigger understanding of the issue, while at the same time letting people experience a unique ecosystem with incredible species in it. A clear reason to abandon single use plastics...

It was 2017 when we got an email from marine biologist Lukas Müller, at that time still a student at Wageningen University, saying that he would like to learn more about VR filming. He worked at the NGO Watermen Project Watermen Project, where he believed he could use VR for their research and promotion of shark conservation.

When we saw the video that he sent with the email of Watermen Project founder and world record freediver William Winram William Winram freediving with Great White Sharks, we were immediately intrigued. Not long after that we met and hit it off, we were both passionate, driven and truly believed in the future of VR in environmental education and documentary making. All we needed was a project.

Only a month later we met up, in an Amsterdam bar, with his freediving mentor William Winram about a project they had in mind. An educational film about the Komodo National park and in particular the Manta Ray population.

It was clear that William was just as passionate about the conservation of the sea, sharks, and every living thing in it. He was asked by National Geographic “Queen of Mantas” Andrea Marshall Andrea Marshall to come help with research on Manta Rays in the Komodo National Park and had proposed to her that it would be a good idea to film the expedition in VR. It would not be long before we’d get there to film an amazing adventure in nature...

The Beast has landed in Amsterdam! VR Gorilla has had the pleasure of testing the KanDao Obsidian Pro camera the last few days. Maybe a game changer for VR with its 8 APS-C sensors and a whopping 12K 3D output. We'll share some content as soon as we've had the chance of post-producing the shots we've made!
