As part of the programme, our full-time students visited the impressive Studio 150 last Friday. It's always a pleasure to meet the owners, Peter and Joeri, hear their stories, exchange expertise, and inspire the next generation of sound engineers and music producers. The studio is housed in an old church, offering stunning acoustics, a large microphone collection, and a control room equipped with a powerful 72-channel SSL 4000 G+.

Thanks Peter and Joeri! Until next time.

For many, it's considered the most legendary Christmas album ever: A Christmas Gift for You from Phil Spector. If anyone is likely to be the biggest fan of this album, it's Alessandro.

Alessandro wrote a comprehensive article about this legendary album, available in the blog section of our website (link in bio). Recently, he discovered one of the original vinyl pressings of this album. On December 5th, join us for an in-depth look at the album’s production techniques to learn how it established the standard for holiday music. The talk, by Alessandro himself, will take place in our iconic Studio 1, featuring a high-end speaker setup (PMC). And perhaps, Alessandro will play the first pressing on vinyl. Join us by registering through the link in our bio so we can get an idea of how many people will attend. The event is open to all music enthusiasts eager to learn more about historical production techniques.

"A Christmas Gift for You from Phil Spector” is special because it captures the Wall of Sound at its very peak; dense layers of instruments recorded live together, enriched by Gold Star Studios’ famous echo chambers, and crafted into a warm, dramatic mono mix that feels both vast and intimate. With Jack Nitzsche’s rich arrangements and powerful vocal performances by artists like Darlene Love and The Ronettes, the album transforms simple Christmas songs into emotionally cinematic productions, setting a timeless standard for holiday music.

Our head lecturer, Anthony Maes, recently introduced our new full-time students to Effects Processors as part of the Music Production and Sound Engineering classes. During the session, students explored a range of classic effects processors—many of which you’ll recognise from your FX units or plugins, such as echo chambers, tape delays, and plate reverbs.

In this clip, Anthony explains how a plate reverb works. We have one on display for students to study up close, and another tucked away and fully accessible directly from our Neve VR. It’s an original EMT 240 plate—a magnificent piece of gear. Once you’ve heard it in action, you’ll want to use it on all your tracks.

Reminder: This Friday, we’re hosting a special evening session with Artist, Music Producer, and Activist Julia Mandoki, who will present her debut album, The Dark Side of the Womb. Julia is an Abbey Road Institute Amsterdam alumna and part of our teaching team. Alongside teaching songwriting and sound theory at our Institute, Julia has spent years advocating for women’s rights through international NGOs, supporting women’s access to safe healthcare worldwide.

Her album combines her experiences in both music and human rights work. Over two years, she recorded it while engineering for artists like Son Mieux, Mike Boddé, and Jasper Blom, balancing studio life with campaigning, counselling, and speaking up for women. Whenever she found a moment, she wrote a song.

Julia will guide us into her sonic world of psychedelic folk and progressive storytelling, sharing how she connects emotion with strategic production choices and balances form with content. The 12-track album was recorded partly in top-tier studios and partly on her houseboat; proof that for Julia, the song always comes first.

On Friday, she will be joined by Dave Warmerdam (production and keys) and Alessandro Ciniero (recording engineer), both ARI Amsterdam alumni as well.

Join us for the journey this Friday at 19:00 and learn more about the creation, production and collaboration of her upcoming album. Make sure to register for free via the link in our bio or on our website.
