Earlier today, on January 10, 2025, at the State House, the Independent Commission for Peace and National Cohesion - Sierra Leone unveiled its three-year results report to His Excellency President Julius Maada Bio. This report showcases the Commission's endeavors, successes, and hurdles from July 2021 to July 2024. The Commission aspires to cultivate a Sierra Leone distinguished by justice, harmony, and social unity. Its mission is twofold: to foster peaceful coexistence, equity, and inclusivity while building a robust network of skills for conflict prevention, resolution, and management to support national growth. To effectively steer its initiatives, the Commission has crafted a holistic Strategic Plan that revolves around six key pillars: Peace Promotion, Mediation and Reconciliation, Early Warning and Early Response, Strengthening National Cohesion, Advising the Government, and Coordination and Collaboration. These pillars create a resilient framework designed to nurture peace and fortify national cohesion, ultimately ensuring sustainable development and stability throughout Sierra Leone. In response, the President expressed heartfelt appreciation for the Commission's dedication over the years, underscoring the vital importance of peace and national cohesion as catalysts for national progress. He reiterated the government's unwavering support and commitment to realizing a peaceful Sierra Leone.

For Some Farmers, the Season Preparations Starts as Soon as the Last One Ends

I spent the day in Newton, visiting Santuary Farms and my own farm site, where I nursing and growing plantains.

At Santuary Farms, which specialises in vegetables, preparation are well on the was to grow fresh set of vegetables in irrigated greenhouses.

But Santuary Farms is not just growing and selling fresh vegetables in the Freetown area. The owner, Kippy Debs, who also happens to be VP at Africell, offers training courses to young men and women on the farm. They give them hands on experience on all aspects of the farm works; from nursery, land preparation, the optimal planting distance and pattern, irrigation, mechanisation, handling of fresh produce etc.

This afternoon, two young women bound for Njala university were working the greenhouses and learned about how planting peppers in a ziz-zag pattern on bed, versus the traditional two rows is optional productivity.
Alex Johnson, a volunteer at MAFS was also teaching some young how to use small machines for minimum tillage during land prep. I took this lesson too, and during my practice session Alex told me I passed with flying colours.

Places like Santuary Farms give me great confidence that we will succeed with Feed Salone.
My visit ended with a healthy meal of the freshest salad I have had in a while.

These initiatives will significantly improve immunization efforts and strengthen ambulance services in the district, ensuring high-quality health care for the district.

FACTS MATTER

It’s essential to set the record straight regarding the rumors circulating on social media about President Bio and the commissioning of locally made boats in Sierra Leone:

1. The commissioning did not take place in Bonthe; it occurred in Freetown as part of the Youth Employment Promotion and Livelihood Employment Program.

2. On that same day, the President rolled out several initiatives designed to empower our youth.

3. One of these initiatives was the Youth in Fisheries Initiative, which unveiled 50 fully-equipped boats featuring high-efficiency outboard engines, highlighting his commitment to supporting fishing communities and empowering coastal youth.

4. Additionally, under the Youth in Commercial Transportation program, the President launched 200 tricycles that will benefit 400 young individuals, illustrating his dedication to creating opportunities and sustainable livelihoods.

5. That day also included the awarding of startup grants to 864 rural youths, effectively addressing financial obstacles for emerging entrepreneurs.

6. Moreover, grants were provided to 40 female-led organizations, advancing gender equality and inclusive governance to tackle social issues. The farm placements and practical training in agriculture further demonstrate his commitment to making farming attractive and promoting food self-sufficiency, especially for graduate farmers.

These initiatives are crucial for building a brighter and more resilient future for our nation, all achieved thanks to the generous support from UNDP donations.

This morning, my husband, His Excellency President Julius Maada Bio, and I had the honor of attending New Year’s Mass at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Tihun, Sogbini Chiefdom. As we joined the congregation in prayer and thanksgiving, I was reminded of the profound importance of starting the year with unity, gratitude, and faith. Coming together to worship and praise God not only strengthens our spiritual foundation but also serves as a powerful reminder of the shared values that bind us as a people.

On this first day of the year, I extend my heartfelt wishes for a happy and fulfilling New Year to all Sierra Leoneans, at home and abroad. Last night, As part of our cherished New Year traditions, my husband, His Excellency President Dr. Julius Maada Bio, and I were delighted to attend a vibrant cultural performance in Tihun, Sogbini Chiefdom. This provided a wonderful opportunity to connect with the community and celebrate Sierra Leone's rich cultural heritage as we begin the new year.

We were deeply impressed by the talent and artistry on display.
