JollyJoker INTERNATIONAL - Korean flair, hosted by 800/40 in Seoul
After a longer break we are very happy to announce our first international project opening on the 16th of December hosted by 800/40 in Seoul, Korea. Video works by Canadian artist Kris Abdai and Dutch artist Paulien Barbas will be on display until the 22nd of December 2016.
Kris Abdai is a Canadian artist based in Berlin. They co-found Laugh Magazine. Working with a range of time based media including sound, video and live acts, Kris’ research revolves around the semiotics in cinema and theatre, most particularly the face and the close-up. Using isolated scenes, loops and often staging live interventions within their installations, Kris plays with themes of comedy & tragedy, spectacle and fandom through the use of slapstick, horror and farce.
Coming from a background in photography Paulien Barbas takes a natural role as observer. This in contrast with the root of her practise which is drastically based in a high sense of materialism and even touch. It’s this contrast that gives Barbas’ work it’s position between the observing photo and video arts and that of sculpture. Her work is precise when process and product are juxtaposed and she creates the sensation of an art work (or world) in becoming. In her process Barbas finds poetry in the flawed; ‘mistakes’ become welcome abstractions that provide the starting point for new ideas to take shape.
Our next project will take place beginning of 2017, keep you posted!
