BuzzHouse is a physical space and creative community where media studies students and alumni of the Faculty of Humanities at the University of Amsterdam are able to gain experience in โ€˜doingโ€™ media, i.e. At the crossroads of theoretical and practical media studies, students and alumni who are, or want to be, creators and explorers in media and event production can work, learn, meet and connect at

BuzzHouse. At BuzzHouse you can for example attend a seminar and talk by a seasoned media professional, join a workshop or training to improve your practical media skills or create and present your own media production or event. Moreover, you can come to BuzzHouse to study, work or just relax. We are open five days a week from 10am to 5pm (except when our space is reserved for a public or private event). You can find as in the round room at BG5 (Oudezijds Achterburgwal 233-237), in the heart of the humanities campus. The entrance is located at (and then past) coffee bar Prisma, from there you need to go to first floor, where we will warmly welcome you to our inspiring BuzzHouse!

Hans Block & Moritz Riesewieck, Verenigde Staten, 2024, 87', trailer) volgt mensen van over de hele wereld die AI gebruiken om avatars van overleden mensen te creรซren. Zo kunnen ze nog steeds communiceren met hun geliefden. Christi, bijvoorbeeld, blijft verbonden met haar overleden partner. Ze gebruikt Project December, een online platform dat AI gebruikt om realistische conversaties te simuleren. Dat doorzoekt zijn digitale identiteit (zoals socialemedia- en sms-berichten) om zijn stem beter te kunnen nabootsen. Christi ervaart betekenisvolle gesprekken die haar een gevoel van vrede geven. Stephenie is verheugd om de stem van haar overleden vader te horen dankzij audiomanipulatietools. Rouwende Koreaanse moeder Jang Ji-sung wordt herenigd met haar overleden dochter door de magie van virtual reality. Hij is nauw betrokken bij projecten die machine learning en kunstmatige intelligentie toepassen op grootschalige computersystemen, zoals de ontwikkeling van GPT-NL, de Nederlandse tegenhanger van ChatGPT. Zijn expertise ligt in het combineren van machine learning met high-performance computing infrastructuren om complexe problemen aan te pakken.

๐—ง๐—ถ๐—บ ๐—ฆ๐—ฐ๐—ต๐—ผ๐—ฒ๐—ป๐—บ๐—ฎ๐—ธ๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐˜€ is Universitair Docent Klinische Psychologie aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam en ACT-therapeut. Hij is gepromoveerd aan de Universiteit van Maastricht en heeft uitgebreid onderzoek gedaan naar verslavingen en gezondheidszorg. Tegenwoordig richt hij zich op mindfulness-gerelateerde therapieรซn zoals ACT, met een bijzondere focus op het verwerken van emoties via het lichaam, bijvoorbeeld bij verlies en rouw. Hij geeft aan de UvA les aan toekomstige therapeuten en ontwikkelt behandelingen voor stress en slapeloosheid.

Over the past three decades, Nigeria's film industry has become a global powerhouse releasing hundreds of films each year. Nollywood, a portmanteau of Nigeria and Hollywood as well as Bollywood, has come to mark the plenitude of filmmaking happening in Lagos from the early 1990s onwards. Following the success of the 1992 straight-to-VHS film Living in Bo***ge by director Chris Obi Rapu, the Nigerian film industry experienced a popular home video boom that gained an huge following in Nigeria, across Africa, and among the global African diaspora. In fact, Nollywood is nowadays considered the worldโ€™s second-largest film industry, and even the largest in terms of output and popularity. Producing about 2,500 films annually and reaching an estimated audience of over 200 million people worldwide, Nollywood has not only seemingly surpassed Hollywood but also Bollywood with regards to production and consumption size. In addition, due to its commercial success and cultural impact, in recent years Nollywood has often been heralded as a potential rising star in Nigeria and Africaโ€™s tourism industry.

- focused on communication (in the broadest sense) on development issues in the Global South, in any discipline or area of knowledge, including humanitarian communication, discourses of international development, the use of stereotypes of โ€˜developingโ€™ countries and peoples, or on any other topic related to both communication and the Global South.

Your thesis will be reviewed by a jury of experts and assessed on the following criteria:

- Academic quality and originality;
- Societal relevance and urgency;
- Writing style and argumentative structure of the thesis.
