𝗛𝘂𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗖𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗲 guides you through every stage of starting a business, from idea development to building a market-ready prototype. This programme is perfect for both students and researchers from UvA’s Faculty of Humanities. Whether you have a fully developed project or an early-stage idea, this is your chance to refine, test, and launch your concept with the help of experts and fellow innovators.

𝗨𝗶𝘁𝗻𝗼𝗱𝗶𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴! In deze 𝗔𝗹𝘂𝗺𝗻𝗶 𝗧𝗮𝗹𝗸𝘀 georganiseerd door de 𝗔𝗹𝘂𝗺𝗻𝗶𝗸𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗻 𝗠𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗮𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗲𝗻 𝗣𝘀𝘆𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝗶𝗲 gaan we dieper in op de 𝗺𝗼𝗴𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗷𝗸𝗵𝗲𝗱𝗲𝗻 𝗲𝗻 𝘂𝗶𝘁𝗱𝗮𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗻 𝘃𝗮𝗻 𝗔𝗜 𝘃𝗼𝗼𝗿 𝗷𝗲 𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗲 𝗴𝗲𝘇𝗼𝗻𝗱𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗱. De documentaire 𝗘𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗬𝗼𝘂 (reg. Hans Block & Moritz Riesewieck, Verenigde Staten, 2024, 87', trailer) volgt mensen van over de hele wereld die AI gebruiken om avatars van overleden mensen te creëren. Zo kunnen ze nog steeds communiceren met hun geliefden. Christi, bijvoorbeeld, blijft verbonden met haar overleden partner. Ze gebruikt Project December, een online platform dat AI gebruikt om realistische conversaties te simuleren. Dat doorzoekt zijn digitale identiteit (zoals socialemedia- en sms-berichten) om zijn stem beter te kunnen nabootsen. Christi ervaart betekenisvolle gesprekken die haar een gevoel van vrede geven. Stephenie is verheugd om de stem van haar overleden vader te horen dankzij audiomanipulatietools. Rouwende Koreaanse moeder Jang Ji-sung wordt herenigd met haar overleden dochter door de magie van virtual reality. Maar, zoals experts ook bevestigen, deze technologische wonderen kunnen zeer problematisch zijn. Manipuleert dit ‘doodskapitalisme’ emotioneel kwetsbare mensen?

Na de film is er een nagesprek met machine learning specialist 𝗧𝗵𝗼𝗺𝗮𝘀 𝘃𝗮𝗻 𝗢𝘀𝗰𝗵 en klinish psycholoog 𝗧𝗶𝗺 𝗦𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗲𝗻𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗿𝘀 over de achterliggende processen en ethische grenzen van deze AI. Zou jij met je geliefden willen praten na hun dood? Welk effect heeft het tot leven wekken van overledenen via AI? Kunnen we echt en nep nog onderscheiden – en is dat erg? En hoe zit het met de technologie achter en regelgeving rondom AI en mentale gezondheid?

𝗠𝗲𝗲𝗿 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗱𝗲 𝘀𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗸𝗲𝗿𝘀
𝗧𝗵𝗼𝗺𝗮𝘀 𝘃𝗮𝗻 𝗢𝘀𝗰𝗵 is specialist in machine learning bij SURF, de Nederlandse ICT-organisatie voor onderwijs en onderzoek. Hij is nauw betrokken bij projecten die machine learning en kunstmatige intelligentie toepassen op grootschalige computersystemen, zoals de ontwikkeling van GPT-NL, de Nederlandse tegenhanger van ChatGPT. Zijn expertise ligt in het combineren van machine learning met high-performance computing infrastructuren om complexe problemen aan te pakken.

𝗧𝗶𝗺 𝗦𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗲𝗻𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗿𝘀 is Universitair Docent Klinische Psychologie aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam en ACT-therapeut. Hij is gepromoveerd aan de Universiteit van Maastricht en heeft uitgebreid onderzoek gedaan naar verslavingen en gezondheidszorg. Tegenwoordig richt hij zich op mindfulness-gerelateerde therapieën zoals ACT, met een bijzondere focus op het verwerken van emoties via het lichaam, bijvoorbeeld bij verlies en rouw. Hij geeft aan de UvA les aan toekomstige therapeuten en ontwikkelt behandelingen voor stress en slapeloosheid.

On 𝗧𝗵𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗱𝗮𝘆, 𝗠𝗮𝘆 𝟯𝟬, 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟰, from 14:00 to 16:00 hrs (CET), the official launch of both the recenty established 𝗘𝗿𝗮𝘀𝗺𝘂𝘀 𝗞𝗻𝗼𝘄𝗹𝗲𝗱𝗴𝗲 𝗖𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗙𝗶𝗹𝗺, 𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗴𝗲 (FIHETO) and the just released edited volume 𝗠𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗮, 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗧𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗺: 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗜𝗺𝗮𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 coincides with this 𝘀𝘆𝗺𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘂𝗺 𝗼𝗻 𝗺𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗮 𝘁𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗺 featuring various international guests. The 2-hour symposium will commence with an introduction by 𝗦𝘁𝗶𝗷𝗻 𝗥𝗲𝗶𝗷𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀, professor of cultural heritage and co-founder of 𝗙𝗜𝗛𝗘𝗧𝗢. Then, the symposium features two keynotes by internationally renowned professors focusing on matters related to media tourism. 𝗝𝗮𝗻𝗲 𝗟𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗹, Senior Lecturer at Canterbury Christ Church University, will talk about magic and heritage in relation to media tourism, while 𝗗𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗱 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗻-𝗝𝗼𝗻𝗲𝘀, Professor of Film Studies at the University of Glasgow, will explore the representation of tourism in Bollywood films. Following their two keynotes, the new knowledge platform 𝗙𝗜𝗛𝗘𝗧𝗢 and new edited volume 𝗠𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗮, 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗧𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗺 will be officially launched, including short reflections by 𝗦𝗮𝘀𝗸𝗶𝗮 𝗞𝗮𝗴𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗹, the Rotterdam Film Commissioner and board member of 𝗙𝗜𝗛𝗘𝗧𝗢, and 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗷𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗲 𝗚𝗮𝗹𝗮𝘀, Director of Members & Education at the Association of Film Commissioners International | AFCI.

The symposium will take place at P***k 2-18 on the EUR campus in Rotterdam. Following the symposium, there will be a networking reception from 16:00 to 17:00 hrs at Paviljoen. 𝗖𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗙𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗙𝗶𝗹𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗔𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁! Organized for Radical Climate Action (ORCA) is an informal student organization advocating for climate justice and urging the University of Amsterdam (UvA) to sever ties with the fossil fuel industry. As part of their collaboration with the Climate Museum and UvA, they are organizing a video exhibition to amplify their voices and inspire others to join their movement.

𝗔𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁
ORCA wants to create five individual portraits of their activists and one collective portrait. These videos will briefly narrate their activist stories, aiming to spark enthusiasm and engagement among fellow students. ORCA is seeking a fellow student with at least some experience in film who can assist them in recording and editing these videos.

🇨🇩 On 𝗦𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗮𝘆 𝗠𝗮𝘆 𝟮𝟲 at 𝟭𝟳:𝟬𝟬 𝗵𝗿𝘀 the 𝗔𝗳𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗰 𝗙𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗮𝗹 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟰 will continue with the 𝗗𝘂𝘁𝗰𝗵 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗶𝗲𝗿𝗲 of 𝗟𝘂𝗺𝘂𝗺𝗯𝗮, 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗥𝗲𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝗮 𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗼 in 𝗠𝗲𝗹𝗸𝘄𝗲𝗴 𝗖𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗺𝗮! This documentary recounts the highly political celebrations of the return of Lumumba's remains, but above all seeks to find out what remains of Patrice Lumumba, in the Congo and in Belgium. In this documentary, Haitian history is presented through an explosion of colour, dance and music, as the country prepares for its legendary carnival. As we step into the new year, our friends from the 𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗶𝘀𝗲 𝗖𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗲 𝗛𝘂𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗻 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 would like to inform you about the online launch of their new 𝗜𝗻𝗰𝗹𝘂𝘀𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗚𝘂𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗖𝗼𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻. This guide, which is 𝗮𝘃𝗮𝗶𝗹𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗯𝗼𝘁𝗵 𝗗𝘂𝘁𝗰𝗵 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗘𝗻𝗴𝗹𝗶𝘀𝗵, is comprised of three parts:

(1) The 𝗚𝘂𝗶𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗣𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗽𝗹𝗲𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗜𝗻𝗰𝗹𝘂𝘀𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, ten in total;

Together, the guide offers a unique 𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝗿𝗲𝗳𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗼𝗼𝗹𝘀 for practicing 𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹, 𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗹𝘂𝘀𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 in international cooperation. The Inclusive Communication Guide for International Cooperation, which HuCom has created in collaboration with the 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗼𝘀 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗣𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗼𝗻 𝗜𝗻𝗰𝗹𝘂𝘀𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 and is beautifully illustrated by 𝗦𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆𝗚𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱, can be accessed as an 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗱𝗼𝗰𝘂𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 as well as 𝗱𝗼𝘄𝗻𝗹𝗼𝗮𝗱𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗣𝗗𝗙𝘀, free of charge and available for all. Next week 𝗙𝗿𝗶𝗱𝗮𝘆, 𝗢𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝟲, 𝗕𝘂𝘇𝘇𝗛𝗼𝘂𝘀𝗲 will host a 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝘀𝗵𝗼𝗽 𝗼𝗻 𝗡𝗼𝗹𝗹𝘆𝘄𝗼𝗼𝗱, Nigeria’s booming film industry. From 3-5pm, film scholar-practitioner Emiel Martens will enter into a conversation with five seasoned Nollywood filmmakers: 𝗨𝘇𝗼𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗺𝗮 𝗢𝗸𝗽𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗶, 𝗕𝗶𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗻 𝗦𝘁𝗲𝗽𝗵𝗲𝗻, 𝗞𝘂𝗻𝗹𝗲 𝗔𝗳𝗼𝗹𝗮𝘆𝗮𝗻, 𝗞𝗮𝘆𝗼𝗱𝗲 𝗞𝗮𝘀𝘂𝗺 and 𝗭𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯 𝗦𝗮𝗹𝗮𝗺𝗶. Together, they will explore Nigeria's booming film industry and discuss Nollywood's unique production practices, distribution circuits and tourism potentials.

Over the past three decades, Nigeria's film industry has become a global powerhouse releasing hundreds of films each year. Nollywood, a portmanteau of Nigeria and Hollywood as well as Bollywood, has come to mark the plenitude of filmmaking happening in Lagos from the early 1990s onwards. Following the success of the 1992 straight-to-VHS film Living in Bo***ge by director Chris Obi Rapu, the Nigerian film industry experienced a popular home video boom that gained an huge following in Nigeria, across Africa, and among the global African diaspora. In fact, Nollywood is nowadays considered the world’s second-largest film industry, and even the largest in terms of output and popularity. Producing about 2,500 films annually and reaching an estimated audience of over 200 million people worldwide, Nollywood has not only seemingly surpassed Hollywood but also Bollywood with regards to production and consumption size. In addition, due to its commercial success and cultural impact, in recent years Nollywood has often been heralded as a potential rising star in Nigeria and Africa’s tourism industry.

Every two years we award the 𝗛𝘂𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗻 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝘀𝗶𝘀 𝗣𝗿𝗶𝘇𝗲 to the best Master’s thesis on communication for development written by a student at a Dutch or Belgium university or other academic institution in the Netherlands or Belgium. The winner receives the thesis prize and a €500 cash prize.

To enter the competition and be eligible for the HuCom Thesis Prize 2023, a few conditions apply. Your thesis must have been:

- completed between September 1, 2021 and September 1, 2023;
- written at a university or other academic institution in the Netherlands or Belgium;
- written in English;
- awarded with a 7,5 grade or higher;
- focused on communication (in the broadest sense) on development issues in the Global South, in any discipline or area of knowledge, including humanitarian communication, discourses of international development, the use of stereotypes of ‘developing’ countries and peoples, or on any other topic related to both communication and the Global South.

Your thesis will be reviewed by a jury of experts and assessed on the following criteria:

- Academic quality and originality;
- Societal relevance and urgency;
- Writing style and argumentative structure of the thesis.
