OFFICE OF THE DISTRICT ROTARACT REPRESENTATIVE
DISTRICT 9125

JUNE ADDRESS NOTE

Distinguished Rotaractors,

On September 18th 2018 at Plateau House Central District Area Abuja, The meeting started around 2:00pm in the afternoon and lasted for about 4 hours, it was between myself, DS Sheriff, District Governor and DDS Rotn John, We discussed extensively on Rotaract not being a business as usual and how to up our game in the year 2019/2020 Rotary Year.
That was the beginning of my sleepless night.

It's my pleasure to welcome you all to the month of June. This month is designated for Rotary Fellowship month; it is the last month of the Rotary year 2019/20. The month in which Rotaract members enhance their Rotary knowledge, experience, share fellowship and build network of better friendship.

This Rotary year started 11 months ago and today we have less than a month to call it a great Rotary year. The journey so far has not been smooth and cozy but indeed it has been a wonderful experience serving as the District Rotaract Representative.

We started the Rotary year journey on a very pleasant note with one of it's kind District Training Seminar which was held in Ilorin, Kwara State . This was followed by several other programmes such as DRR Investiture in Ibadan, TRF dinner in Abuja, Rotacultural Fiesta in Gboko and several other Zonal and clubs' memorable programmes.

There is no doubt that there has been highs and lows for the past 11 months but with persistence and perseverance, we were able to charge forward against all odds. The experience so far is outstanding, thanks to unwavering support of talented members of Rotaract District 9125. Without mincing words, I never regret any moment of being the District Rotaract Representative.

I congratulate the Election Committee chairman and the members for successful conduct of free and fair election of the DRRN and DRRD respectively. I also appreciate the good people of the District for the way they maintained decorum during and after the electioneering process. Finally, I congratulate the District Rotaract Representative Nominee in person of Rotr. Oladimeji Sheriff Olalekan and the District Rotaract Representative Designate in person of Rotr. Emmanuel Chikadibia Issac, may the good lord be with you and I wish you both successful tenure ahead.

Distinguished Rotaractors, election has come and gone, No victor no vanquish. Rotary was formed based on friendship, fellowship and fun, it is human to have our differences as regard to the choices we make but election should not break the friendship and fellowship we have built over the years. We need to work together as people to achieve greater feat. Our support is all what the elected representatives need to have a successful tenure. Let us all do away with our differences and work together for the good of our dear District.

There is still plenty of things to expect this month of June. The Rotary District is working on having a virtual District Conference which is scheduled to hold between 18th-19th of June, Virtual RI Convention is scheduled for 20th of June.

On this note, to whom much is given, much is equally expected. I humbly appreciate the effort of Our able father, the District Governor, District Rotaract Committee chair, all District board members of Rotaract. I outstretch this appreciation to the council of Past District Rotaract Representatives for their timely support. Your support was critical for the past 11 months, continuing will make a lot of difference to the District at large.

This moment of appreciation will be incomplete if I fail to recognize and appreciate the effort of Rotaract members of the District. I am humbled and honoured to working with you for the past 11 months. You guys are the most wonderful people have come across with different personalities. It is indeed a rare privilege to have served as your District Rotaract Representative. However, during the course of discharging my duties as your District Rotaract Representative, if by chance anyone feels I was too discourteous with my actions or perhaps inertness. I will like to apologise to that person or group of persons. I am human and of course not perfect. Please do take this as my sincere apology and do note that such decisions were perceived to be in the best interest of the District that I was given the opportunity to serve and do not portray personal interest whatsoever.

It was a pretty great experience leading intelligent, smart and passionate people as you. Thanks for the opportunity given to me to serve.

It Profit Most, He Who Serve Best

God be with you all.

Rotr. Olanrewaju Peter Olowu PHF,
District Rotaract Representative 2019-2020
Rotary District 9125.

09/05/2020

1. Friendship/Fellowship/Community: In an increasingly complex world, Rotaract provides one of the most basic human needs: the need for friendship and fellowship. It is one of two reasons why Rotary began in 1905.

2. Business Development: The second original reason for Rotary's beginning is business development. Everyone needs to network. Rotaract consists of a cross¬section of every business community. Its members come from all walks of life. Rotaractors help each other and collectively help others.

3. Personal Growth and Development: Membership in Rotaract ensures continuing growth and education in human relations and personal development.

4. Leadership Development: Rotaract is an organisation of leaders and successful people. Serving in Rotaract positions is like a college education. Leadership is all about learning how to motivate, influence and lead leaders.

5. Citizenship in the Community: Membership in a Rotaract club helps develop better community citizens. The average Rotaract club consists of the most active citizens of any community.

6. Continuing Education: At each Rotaract fellowship (meeting), there is a programme designed to keep members informed about what is going on in the community, nation and world. Each meeting provides an opportunity to listen to different speakers on a variety of timely topics.

7. Fun (with a purpose): Rotaract is a fun and exciting place to be.

8. Prestige: Rotaract members are prominent people: leaders of business, the professions, art, government, sports, military, religion, and all disciplines. Rotaract is the oldest and most prestigious service club in the world. Its ranks include executives, managers, and professionals - people who make decisions and influence policy.

9. Citizenship in the World: Every Rotaractor wears a pin that says "Rotary International." There are few places on the globe that do not have a Rotaract club. Every Rotaractor is welcome - even encouraged - to attend any of the 30,000 clubs in 194 nations and geographical regions. This encourages new friendships in both local and world communities.

10. Assistance When Traveling: Traveling Rotaractors can secure medical and professional assistance as well as services and advice from fellow Rotaractors throughout the world.

11. Public Speaking Skills: Many individuals who joined Rotaract were uncomfortable about speaking in public. Rotaract develops confidence and skill in public communication and the opportunity to practice and perfect these skills.

12. Entertainment: Every Rotaract club and district has parties and activities that contribute to a diverse, yet professional business life. Rotaract holds conferences, conventions, assemblies, and institutes that provide entertainment in addition to Rotaract information, education, and service.

13. Development of Social Skills: Every fellowship (meeting) and at various events and functions, Rotaract develops one's personality, social skills and people skills. Rotaract is for people who like people.

14. Family Programmes: Rotaract provides one of the world's largest youth exchange programs; high school and college clubs for future Rotaractors; opportunities for spouse involvement; and a host of activities designed to help family members in growth and the development of family values.

15. Vocational Skills: Every Rotaractor is expected to take part in the growth and development of his or her own profession or vocation; to serve on committees and to teach youth about jobs or vocations. Rotaract helps to make each individual a better doctor, lawyer, teacher, etc.

16. The Development of Ethics: Rotaractors practice a 4¬Way Test that governs their ethical standards. Rotaractors are expected to be ethical in business and personal relationships.

17. Cultural Awareness: Around the world, practically every religion, country, culture, race, creed, political persuasion, language, colour and ethnic identity is represented among members of Rotaract club. Rotaract club is a cross-section of the world's most prominent citizens who are aware of their cultures and have developed a love of working with people everywhere. They become better citizens of their countries in the process.

18. Nice People: Rotaractors are nice people!

19. Absence of an Official Creed: Rotaract has no secret handshake, no official creed, no secret meetings or rituals. It is an open society of men and women who simply believe in helping others.

20. Opportunity to Serve: As a service club, Rotaract business is mankind and its product is service. This is perhaps the best reason for becoming a Rotaractor: the chance to do good.

The 20 reason above is enough for you to join Rotaract club if you're a young person living in this generation.

President’s Message Month of January 2020
Dear fellow Rotarians and members of the family of Rotary,
People from all over the world have multiple reasons for joining Rotary. Many new Rotarians each year join for the same reason I did — because Rotary is a great way to benefit your career. When I was a new attorney starting out in Alabama, Gay and I became partners in her father’s firm. He instilled in us the value of joining Rotary as a way to build relationships and demonstrate to potential clients that we were serious professionals who held firm to values even more robust than what our profession required.
Rotary’s commitment to vocational service is built on the highest ethical standards in business and professions, the recognition of the worthiness of all useful work, and the dignifying of each Rotarian’s occupation as an opportunity to serve society. That last point is so important. No matter our profession, we all contribute mightily to the world when we conduct our work with integrity and always adhere to The Four-Way Test.
I have made balancing the demands of Rotary with professional and family commitments one of my priorities as president. No Rotarian should feel pressured to put in more time than a volunteer position should ever demand. This is true for several reasons, one of them being that the work we do in our day jobs is just as important to Rotary as the work we do in the organization. We carry our Rotary values everywhere, and our professional success helps build a case for Rotary every day we go into the office.
This is particularly important in our efforts to reach younger new members. We want to see a Rotary where no one is ever asked to choose between being a good Rotarian and being a good parent, business owner, manager, or employee. When we ask busy young people to join us, we should not be asking them to give up their time and freedom. We should be rewarding them with an experience that makes everything they already do even more inspiring.
No matter our profession,
we all contribute mightily to the world
when we conduct our work with integrity.
Providing greater balance within Rotary will have another benefit as well: It will create opportunities for other Rotarians, including Rotaractors, to step up and take a leadership role on projects and committees. This will ensure that they remain engaged in our clubs and inspired to be Rotarians for life.
Throughout the world, Rotary is admired for its vocational service and for the time-honored values we instill in all business relationships. As we continue our work to grow Rotary, let us remember that vocational service remains a crucial selling point to potential members.
Rotary Connects the World, and by making Rotary’s vocational service work known to people in more professions and at different stages of their careers, we will help grow our organization and make it stronger and more diverse.
MARK DANIEL MALONEY
President, Rotary International

*Distinguish Leaders and Fellow Rotaractors of District 9125*

I would like to begin this first message of the new year with Happy New Rotary Year wishes to all members of this Great District.
Yesterday mark the end of the first decade of selfless service in our dear District 9125.
Over the years we have enjoyed the selfless service rendered by different leaders who have put together thier resources to ensure that we have a strong and well structured district. Our immediate past DRR David Bello Esq. gave us a wonderful performance and set a milestone standard that serve as Inspiration for us to journey into the next decade.

When Paul Harris, then at thirty six (36) years, called a meeting of his three business acquaintances – Gustave Loehr, Silvester Schiele and Hiram Shorey – on 23rd Feb. 1905, he was a young professional in a new town in search of friendship and looking to make an impact. But he wasn’t sure where to begin. A century later, Rotary International connects 1.2 million Rotarians and 250,000 Rotaractors to peers, mentors and mentees; to professional opportunities and to people and communities in need of our help across the world. *“Rotary connects us to people we would never otherwise have met, who are more like us than we ever could have known,”*

When I was serving as the Club President of Rotaract Club of Federal Polytechnic Ede, We joined our zone to exchange fellowship with Sponsoring Rotary clubs to commiserate the Rotaract week celebration. On 10th of March precisely, during introduction time at one of the meetings Two Lovely sisters "a Rotaractor and a Rotarian" who have lost contact and bond for over 2 decades was connected that night after getting to know they shared the same Surname, same Look and from same Home. Truly, Rotary comes with this Connection that is Strong enough to Link us to the Universe.
This Rotary Year, we are charged by the RI President Mark Daniel Maloney in the tradition of Rotary with a Theme that summarize and best suit the stories above as he engages us in the fact that ROTARY CONNECTS THE WORLD.

Yes, Rotary connects us with ourselves.
What does that mean? Rotary allows us to shape the best version of ourselves. Every
Member brings a unique point of view and a different way of getting things done.
We are all born with different talents. Whether our strength is providing service on
the ground or helping to administer projects from an office, Rotary gives each of us a
chance to harness those talents to show leadership by making a powerful impact in our
community and in our world.
Wherever you live, you benefit from being part of a community. But those benefits are
not free. You need to give something back for the privilege of being part of that com-
munity. That philosophy lies at the heart of Rotary.

I would also like to reaffirm that for 2019-2020 We must go back to basics and embrace integrity, in order to restore the dignity of Rotaract starting from today July 1.
Our District Goals have been designed in such a way that we will meet up the elevated standard of Rotaract. While we may approach things differently, together we are so powerful.
I want to charge us all as District Team members, Club presidents and distinguished members to serve with all our might as *It Profit Most, He who Serve Best*.

On behalf of the RI President Mark D. Maloney and District Governor of 9125 Victor C Onukwugha PhD. I welcome you all to 2019-2020 Rotary Year and wish you all a successful Rotary Year ahead.
Thank you and God bless you.

RIPN Holger Knaack’s Acceptance Remarks at Hamburg Convention - 2019
Thank you for the warm reception.
As most of you know, if there had not been a health problem, it would have been Past Director Sushil Gupta standing before you today. It took great strength and courage for Sushil to step away from his dream. That same strength will aid him well in his battle back to good health. We all need to keep Sushil in our thoughts and prayers.
As for me, I can barely contain both the shock and the excitement of being your president-nomin
ee. My wife, Susanne, shares that excitement and commitment to serving you.
Our lives have been instantly changed by that recent telephone call asking if I would serve as your president in 2020-21. The answer was, without hesitation, an emphatic “Yes!” Since that moment, we have not stopped running.
We have had our first orientation at world headquarters, meetings with President Barry and President-elect Mark, and many staff meetings. Many times, I have had to stop and pause to reflect on the reality of what is happening. I cannot express to you how happy and excited we are.
I might have had a late start; however, I promise you that, with Susanne’s support, I will be ready to serve as your president.
I can also assure you that in the coming year I will work with Mark, and the president to follow me, as a team, to lead our organization to further success. Rotary expects our governors, governors-elect, and governors-nominee to work together as a team, and that is exactly how we will also lead.
President Barry and President-elect Mark have done amazing work this past year raising the profile of Rotaract, and I will be proud to continue this progress. When I work with Rotaract, I am always impressed with their ability to multitask, to devote themselves to challenging work, and to just get things done. I see no difference between a Rotarian and a Rotaractor. To me, we are all members of Rotary International, and we work together and use our own strengths and abilities to serve our organization.
Attending a Rotary convention always feels like coming home to me, but it is especially true this year. It was not long ago that I made a humble suggestion in a handwritten note that Hamburg would make a great site for a future Rotary Convention, and now we are here!
I want to thank the German Rotarians for their donations of money and time that made this convention possible, and for the hospitality they have shown Rotarians from around the world that has made it such a success.
I am humbled and honoured to accept the nomination to serve as the first German president of this great organization in the 2020-21 Rotary year.
The honour is not mine. It belongs to my Rotary club, my district, my fellow German Rotarians, the amazing Rotaractors, and the Rotary staff that I have had the pleasure of serving with through the years. All of you made this possible, and I am grateful. I could spend the rest of the evening telling you stories about our Youth Exchange and Rotaract experiences, but now is not a time for such stories or the sharing of plans and ideas. However, I will share with you that I strongly believe that Rotary also has to be fun. We need fellowship and must emphasize our core values.
Again, I cannot begin to express my gratitude for this honour, and I feel a tremendous responsibility to make the most of it. Rotary has been one of the great joys of my life. I look forward to sharing that joy with all of you as your president-nominee

Value of Rotary volunteering
A special report prepared for Rotary International by the Johns Hopkins Center for Civil Society Studies estimated the value of Rotary member volunteer hours at $850 million a year.
Cosmos Segbefia, a member of the Rotary Club of Sekondi-Takoradi, and Derrick Ababio Kwarteng, of Global Communities, assist with the construction of a borehole in the Western Region of Ghana in 2018. A report by Johns Hopkins University prepared for Rotary International estimated that Rotary members provide about 47 million hours of volunteer effort a year at an estimated value of $850 million.
That Rotary members log a lot of volunteer hours should come as no surprise to anyone familiar with the organization. But a new report just released by Johns Hopkins University provides a powerful look at the impact of all those volunteer hours.
The special report prepared for Rotary International by the Johns Hopkins Center for Civil Society Studies found that Rotary members had volunteered a total of 5.8 million hours within a four-week survey period. Extrapolating those results over an entire year, the report gave a conservative estimate of nearly 47 million hours of volunteer effort generated by Rotary members in a typical year.
The report then analyzed the economic impact of all those hours and estimated the value conservatively at $850 million a year, if communities had to pay for the services that Rotary volunteers provide.
Rotary, with the help of Johns Hopkins University, is the first global service organization to conduct an empirical analysis of its volunteer’s impact using an internationally sanctioned definition of volunteer work. The authors of the report noted in their conclusion that at each stop, the analysis had chosen the most conservative estimates.
“This makes the results reported here all the more remarkable,” the authors noted. “Translated into economic terms, Rotary is annually generating a scale of social and economic problem-solving effort that is worth nearly nine times more than it costs the organization to produce.”
Rotary General Secretary John Hewko said the figure doesn't even include the in-kind contributions and the money that Rotary clubs and the Rotary Foundation raise every year. In addition, the figure doesn’t include the volunteer work of the many relatives and friends of Rotary that members often involve in a project, or that of members of Rotaract, Interact, or the Community Corps, that would easily double the estimate of Rotary’s economic impact.

Sushil Gupta Resigns as RI President-Nominee
My Fellow Rotarians,
It is with a heavy heart that I announce my resignation as the president-nominee of Rotary International. While it was my dream to serve as your president, my health prevents me from giving my absolute best to you and the office of the president at this time. I believe Rotary deserves nothing less than that from those elected to represent this great organization of ours.
I have made this difficult decision after much soul searching and conferring with my family. This is not only a disappointment for us, but I am also keenly aware that this will be a disappointment for many Rotarians in India who were so proud to see someone from our country again named as president. I know that this is what is best for Rotary International.
I have been a Rotarian for more than 40 years and it has given me everything I could ask for. I can think of no higher honor than to have been selected by the Nominating Committee as president of Rotary for the 2020-21 Rotary year. I will continue to proudly serve as a Rotary member and pursue some major initiatives that I wanted to accomplish during my year as president, because I know that we are poised to achieve more great things in the future.
I wish nothing but the best to the candidate who succeeds me as president and thank you all for the support and encouragement you have shown me in the past year.
-Sushil Gupta

Did you know that 18 million children have been saved from paralysis since 1988 because of the successful polio vaccination campaign led internationally by # Rotary ? Take a bow! On a more sobering note, a key challenge facing our drive to eradicate polio is the rise of vaccine scepticism. Read more about this growing threat to the health of our kids:

Paul P. Harris: Rotary’s Founder
Rotary started with the vision of one man — Paul P. Harris.
Harris was born on 19 April 1868 in Racine, Wisconsin, USA. At age 3, he moved to Wallingford, Vermont, where he grew up in the care of his paternal grandparents. He attended the University of Vermont and Princeton University and received his law degree from the University of Iowa in 1891.
Paul P.Harris eventually persuaded several business associates to discuss the idea of forming an organization for local professionals. On 23 February 1905, Harris, Gustavus Loehr, Silvester Schiele, and Hiram Shorey gathered at Loehr’s office in downtown Chicago for what would become known as the first Rotary club meeting.
This week is the 151st anniversary of the birth of Rotary founder Paul Harris.

April is Maternal and Child Health Month at Rotary International!
Posted by Peter German
Rotary International's new monthly theme for April is Maternal and Child Health!
Every day mothers risk their lives giving birth and millions of children die each year from treatable, preventable causes. At least 7 million children under the age of five die each year due to malnutrition, poor health care, and inadequate sanitation. To help reduce this rate, Rotary provides immunizations and antibiotics to babies, improves access to essential medical services, and supports trained health care providers for mothers and their children. Rotary’s projects ensure sustainability by empowering the local community to take ownership of health care training programs.
Maternal and Child Health Care is also recognized as one of Rotary’s Six Areas of Focus.
To get more information and read news about Rotary's work to promote maternal and child health can be found at the link below:
https://www.rotary.org/myrotary/en/learning-reference/about-rotary/maternal-and-child-health

We expand access to quality care, so mothers and children everywhere can have the same opportunities for a healthy future. An estimated 5.9 million children under the age of five die each year because of malnutrition, inadequate health care, and poor sanitation — all of which can be prevented.

Timely issue with an interview with RIP Barry Rassin who says to Rotarians "Let's start the conversation" about climate change.
He says, "About 95 percent of the people I've spoken with say it's about time that Rotary talks about the environment."
He continues ... With polio, people say, "OK, that's just heath care." But when you start talking about the environment , people asks if it's political. I'm not talking politics; I'm talking about our world and how to make it a better place. We're in a position where, with all the people Rotary has around the world, we can make a difference.
"You look at our polio eradication program: It's successful not because we've provided the vaccines. It's because Rotarians were able to talk to the right people, to give the right support, to do the right thing. If we did that with the environment, governments would listen to us."
"I think this is Rotary's moment to start the conversation. If Rotary is going to be relevant, then we've got to be looking at the environment."
I like this important issue. Thank you to The Rotarian magazine.
