Organised Labour Weekend said President Bola Tinubu and the National Assembly, NASS, will determine its next line of action, following last Friday's stalemated negotiations on a new national minimum wage, NNMW.

This is even as industry experts and financial analysts have noted that the economy is on a tough road to recovery and that the minimum wage agitation and return of fuel subsidy will further complicate the process and prospect of early recovery.

It will be recalled that the tripartite committee on NNMW had on Friday, June 8, ended negotiations without an agreement due to sharp division in offers between employers (government and OPS) and organised labour ( Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria, TUC).

Contrary to expectations, the Federal Government negotiating team added N2,000 to its earlier offer of N60,000, leading to the deadlock that forced labour to declare a nationwide strike.

As a result of the deadlock, the committee resolved to take both the N62,000 offer by the Federal Government team which has the backing of the OPS and the N250,000 now demanded by organised labour to President Bola Tinubu for further action.

Ahead of the September 21, 2024 governorship election in Edo State, the All Progressives Congress (APC) has suffered a setback as a top party member from Edo Central, Chief Francis Inegbeneki, resigned his party membership.

In a letter of resignation dated June 8, 2024, Inegbeneki, who is the state vice chairman of the party, wrote that after keeping faith with the APC for 25 years, some recent developments in the party in his local government area and Edo State conflicted with his core principles and values.

Inegbeneki was accused last year of holding a series of secret meetings at a hotel in his home community of Irrua, where he agreed to work for the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) against the APC during the 2023 House of Assembly election. This action earned him expulsion before he was later pardoned.

In the letter, addressed to the APC ward chairman in Opoji, Esan Central local government area of Edo State, the Uzoya of Esan Land maintained that the party’s development led him to seriously evaluate his political future in Edo State and determine the way forward.

Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2023 elections, Atiku Abubakar, has revealed that he saved President Bola Tinubu from being impeached during his tenure as Lagos State governor.

Atiku stated this while reacting to a recent comment credited to Vice President Kashim Shettima.

Speaking at an event on Thursday, Shettima said that both Atiku and National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu once benefited from President Tinubu’s political support during their persecution.

Shettima mentioned that President Tinubu’s residence in Bourdillon served as a refuge for Atiku when he faced alleged harassment, intimidation, dehumanisation, and expulsion from the PDP.

Reacting in a statement by his Media Adviser, Paul Ibe, on Sunday, Atiku said Shettima “goofed,” adding that “truth be told, it was Tinubu that benefited immensely from Atiku’s goodwill.”

The former vice president stated that without his support, President Tinubu would not have enjoyed his tenure as Lagos State Governor and might have been impeached.

The Enugu State Government has emerged as the most prudent state in recurrent expenditures, data published by Open Nigerian States, a website supported by BudgIT, has shown.
The development has equally earned Governor Peter Mbah-led administration the commendation of an Enugu-based civil society organisation, the Enugu Good Governance Group, E-3G.
According to the Open Nigerian States, the budget implementation report of the states showed that while Benue, Imo, Niger, Rivers, Sokoto and Yobe States have no data to their names, the remaining 30 state governments recorded N986.64bn in recurrent expenditures, which includes workers salaries, refreshments, sitting allowances, travelling, utilities, among others, in the first quarter of 2024.
Lagos State recorded the highest recurrent expenses nationally, N189.62bn, followed by Delta State, which recorded N68.68bn.
Ebonyi State recorded the highest recurrent expenses in the South East with N14.95bn, followed by Abia State with N10.92bn and Anambra State with N9.91bn recurrent expenses.
However, Enugu State recorded only N7.51bn to emerge the least in recurrent expenditures in both the region and the entire country.

The presidency has said that organised labour should be thankful that Nigeria is not in a military regime, stressing that their demands are unrealistic.

President Bola Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy said the Nigerian Labour Congress, NLC, and Trade Union Congress, TUC, enjoy much freedom because Nigeria is not under a military regime.

On Monday, the organized labour embarked on strike to push for an improved pay package.

The strike was, however, called off after the Nigerian Government and labour agreed to increase the minimum wage and continue further negotiations.

Labour demanded N494,000 while the government proposed N60,000, but the agreement reached might see the latter paying between N60,000 to N100,000.

However, Onanuga urged labour to be responsible in their demands.

According to Onanuga: “Labour should view itself as a partner with the Federal Government, not as an adversary to the Federal Government.

“Labour should be thankful to God that we are not in a military regime. We are in a civilian regime that allows for freedom of expression.

“I think that labour overstepped their bounds by shutting down the national grid. At a time when we are complaining about the lack of power, I think that act is extreme. You’re not supposed to shut down the airports on everyone else. Joining the strike should be voluntary.

“I will appeal to labour to be more responsible in their reaction. They cannot be asking for what they are asking for. It is unrealistic.”

The Nigerian Senate has passed a bill to establish the National Animal Husbandry and Ranches Commission after a heated debate on Wednesday.

The legislation entitled, “A Bill for an Act to Establish National Animal Husbandry and Ranches Commission for the Regulation, Management, Preservation and Control of Ranches throughout Nigeria; and for connected purpose, 2024”, was sponsored by Titus Zam, the Senator representing Benue North-west.

Explaining the general principles of the bill, Zam canvassed the need for the proposed Commission to manage, regulate, and preserve ranches across the country.

The bill, however, met stiff opposition from Senator Danjuma Goje from Gombe and his counterpart from Kebbi, Adamu Aliero.

Both Lawmakers and former governors argued that cattle rearing and ranching activities were more in the North than in other parts of the country, reasoning that lawmaking should be for the entire country and not for a section.

The Trade Union Congress, TUC, has vowed to reject little addition to the N60,000 new minimum wage offered by the Nigerian government.

TUC President Festus Osifo disclosed this on Tuesday while featuring on Channels Television’s Politics Today programme.

According to Osifo: “We also told them that it’s not that we’d get to the table and you start adding N1, N2, N3,000 as you were doing and we got some good guarantees here and there that they would do something good.”

TUC and the Nigerian Labour Congress, NLC, had declared an indefinite strike on Monday to demand a better wage for workers.

The organised labour demanded N494,000, while the Nigerian government proposed N60,000.

After a meeting between the government and labour, the strike was called off while President Bola Tinubu ordered the Finance Minister, Wale Edun, to come up with the financial implications of a new minimum wage within 48 hours.

The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) have insisted that they would go ahead with the strike today, while negotiations on their demands could continue.

In a post on X, the congress said the industrial action which has grounded the nation’s economy will continue until Tuesday’s meeting of union organs where all resolutions of Monday’s meeting are expected to be reviewed.

“Until we hear from our organs at our meeting scheduled for today, June 4, we are still on strike,” the post read.

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has condemned the recent behaviour of Minister of Works, David Umahi, who abruptly walked out on journalists during a scheduled press briefing at his office in Abuja.

Journalists had been invited to the press conference at the Mabushi office of the minister and had waited for nearly an hour for Minister Umahi to address them.

The event was scheduled for 2 pm, but the minister did not arrive until 2:50 pm. After reciting the national anthem and pledge, Umahi declared, “There is no press here. The press conference is not held again. When the press is ready.”

He then exited the room, accompanied by the permanent secretary and other directors, without providing any explanation or offering an apology to the over 40 journalists present.

The NUJ expressed its strong disapproval of the minister’s actions, emphasizing the importance of respect and cooperation between public officials and the media.

The presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 elections, Peter Obi has given conditions that would make him agree to a merger between his party and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ahead of the 2027 elections.

Obi stated that he would only enter into a merger with any party or individual if it serves the greater good of Nigeria.

Reacting to a statement by the presidential candidate of the PDP and former vice president, Atiku Abubakar, on the likelihood of a merger between both parties, Obi insisted that an alliance must be focused on improving governance and helping the poor, not just winning elections or for state capture.

President Bola Tinubu has said that the economy of Nigeria was bleeding at the time he took over the government, but that he has stopped the country from bleeding to death through hard work.
The President said that the past 12 months have been challenging and at the same time fulfilling, adding that the worst is over.

President Tinubu, who spoke when he received a Yoruba Leaders of Thought delegation at the Presidential Villa yesterday, May 24, said: “It has been challenging. It has been fulfilling as well. We took over, and we stopped the bleeding. I can say categorically now that Nigeria is no longer bleeding. And it will not bleed to death, but will now move to prosperity. That is the promise I made to you all, and it is also the charge you gave me.

The President assured Nigerians that his administration would ensure that they get value for every kobo spent and that his government would leave a lasting legacy of prosperity to future generations.
He promised to remove the yoke of poor governance and expand access to qualitative public goods.

The traditional leadership crisis in Kano State has taken a new twist as the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, has reportedly ordered the reinstatement of HRH Aminu Ado Bayero as the Emir of Kano.

Kano State Deputy Governor, Aminu Abdussalam, revealed this in an interview with journalists in Kano

The National Security Adviser’s directive to return Aminu Ado Bayero as Emir directly contradicts the actions taken by Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, who recently signed a law reinstating Muhammadu Sanusi II and abolishing the five additional emirate councils.

Deputy Governor Aminu Abdussalam expressed the administration’s confusion and concern over the federal directive.
