19/04/2024

IGBOMO-TORU: PROSPERITY YOUTHS COALITION (PYC) COMMENDS GOV. DOUYE DIRI FOR PERSONAL VISIT AND DONATION OF RELIEF MATERIALS.

CHARGE OPPOSITION LEADERS AND 2027 PROSPECTIVE GOVERNORSHIP ASPIRANTS TO FOLLOW THE GOVERNOR'S EXAMPLE.

Recall that Igbomo-Toru Community in Southern-Ijaw LGA of Bayelsa State was besieged and completely ransacked, following the killing of some ranking officers and men of the Nigerian Army at Okuama in Delta State, where so many of our teaming Youths lost their lives, rendering the natives and residents homeless, making them to fled their home for fear of further reprisal attacks. The Governor of Bayelsa State His Excellency Sen. Douye Diri saw it fit to personally visit the community to assess the level of destruction and to see how the government of the state can extend a hand to the affected community, members of which are largely known to be innocent and even unaware of the Okuama soldier slaughter.

It is on this basis that the we the Prosperity Youths Coalition (PYC) as a frontline youths mobilization and political organization in the state are moved to commend the steps taken by our dear governor to ameliorate the plight of the people of Igbomo-Toru Community, we understand that apart from journeying personally to visit the affected community for an on the ground assessment of the level of destruction, sympathize with his people, the governor's visit was also intended to see how and where the state government can come in the reconstruction process which is indeed a compulsion, even on the part of the federal government of Nigeria.

We at the PYC wish to further appreciate on behalf of the youths of Bayelsa State, the Governor’s personal visit and donation of relief materials to the community, the donation materials including building materials, food stuff, and other essential utilities would greatly assist the returning dwellers settle better and more quickly.

We are however moved by reason to question the political leaders of other political parties, especially those that are planning on heating up the polity early in the state, and those that now nurse the ambition to run for governorship in the near future, is this not one of those rare moments to show the love for the state? It is sad that people who wish to govern us and tell us the massive plans they have if elected into office, cannot even show concern during such a disastrous episode, such as we experienced also during the 2020 flood menace. As youths we consider the silence of the opposition especially the Abuja based "big fishes", their reluctance or failure to show any form of concern as not only painful but also disappointing, as these are the same people that comes every now and then or are planning to come some time before 2027 to tell Bayelsans their loafty plans and how they feel our pains at campaign grounds. The unbothered attitude of leaders of the opposition at emergencies and catastrophies like this and as observed during reoccurring natural disasters like the annual flooding, is very worrisome to the youths, we therefore call on the opposition, especially the Abuja big boys, and the Dubai people to follow the governor's lead in the present situation and show some love to the state, we must not wait till political campaigns to hear from our fathers, uncles, brothers and leaders who God has blessed with various political offices and financial reach.

As a mostly youth based organization, we wish to use this opportunity to remind Youths of the state the need to stay away from unnecessary violence, as the present saga would have been completely avoided if Bayelsa youths had heed the continues call to shun violence of any sort, hence the army wouldn’t have been provoked and have found no pretext to invade and destroy our very peace loving people who went about minding their individual businesses in an harsh economic environment from which the federal government has not provided succour. Bravery is good, but peace is priceless, so says the sage Chinua Achebe.

Okuama: Gov Diri Urges Igbomotoru Residents To Return Home

*Commends Military On Professionalism

*Provides Food, Cash Relief To Communities

Governor of Bayelsa State, Senator Douye Diri, has urged the people of Igbomotoru 1 and 2 communities in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area to return home, saying the Nigerian Army has assured the state government of their safety.

Senator Diri stated this on Tuesday when he visited the two communities with a high-powered delegation that included the Commander of the Nigerian Army 16 Brigade, Oluremi Obolo, to assess the situation in the area.

Soldiers had been deployed in the communities in search of the masterminds of the March 14 killing of 17 soldiers at Okuama in Delta State.

Addressing the paramount ruler, chiefs, elders and youths of both communities, Senator Diri again condemned the killing of the soldiers and charged the people, particularly the youths, not to allow themselves to be used as agents of criminality and destabilisation.

The Bayelsa governor wondered why the impact of an incident that occurred in Delta should be felt in Igbomotoru.

He warned youths not to forcefully take over leadership of their communities, stressing that the era of militancy was over and it was time for intellectual engagement to move the Ijaw nation forward.

The state’s helmsman equally warned traditional rulers and other community leaders to reside in their domains, stressing that any monarch not found in his base stands the risk of being dethroned.

Commending the Nigerian Army for their show of professionalism in handling the incident at Igbomotoru, Diri expressed gratitude to the military for their support and cooperation.

He said:"l like to appreciate the military high command for cooperating with us. I came here to tell the people of Igbomotoru not to allow such thing to happen again. Enough is enough. The era of militancy is over. It is time for intellectual engagement. Our youths should not be seen and used as cannon fodders.

"This is a warning to all those who offer themselves for nefarious activities to have a rethink. The Prosperity Government has established technical colleges and initiated empowerment programmes for youths to key into to develop themselves.

“It is time for us to engage ourselves intellectually because that is the only route to developing our communities. I want to take roads to communities. That is my priority.

“I feel so sad that rather than keying into what our government is doing, some of our youths are getting involved in unproductive ventures. This is a different era. We cannot go back to the era of Adaka Boro. I am happy that President Bola Tinubu has approved the construction of the Lagos-Calabar coastal road covering the whole coast of Ijaw land.”

He however advised the military to painstakingly investigate and unravel those behind the killing of the 17 soldiers for them to face the wrath of the law.

The governor announced the provision of relief materials, including cash, 150 bags of rice and 40 bags of garri to be distributed to the people of both communities.

A minute silence was observed in honour of the slain soldiers and about 20 youths said to have been killed in Igbomotoru 2 community.

Work On Akaba-Okodi Road Impressive, Says Gov Diri

Governor of Bayelsa State, Senator Douye Diri, has expressed satisfaction with the level of progress on the Akaba-Okodi road which links Yenagoa to Ogbia local government area.

Speaking to journalists during an inspection tour of the project on Monday, Senator Diri said he decided to visit to personally assess the level of work on the road project.

According to the governor, "l came to see things for myself to ascertain the work that has been done so far. I was here last year before the November 11 governorship election and l can see the difference between then and now. So much has been achieved.”

Diri, who reaffirmed his administration's resolve not to play politics with development of the state, pointed out that the road connects Ayakoro community in Ogbia council area, which is the hometown of All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain and Managing Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Dr Samuel Ogbuku.

"This is a road linking two local government areas between Yenagoa and parts of Ogbia local government area. This road links Ayakoro, which happens to be the community of the NDDC Managing Director, Dr Samuel Ogbuku. So, it shows that we are not playing politics with development of our state and our people.

"I have a deep knowledge of what our people have gone through and l do not think that under me, having known all of that, will begin to play stupid and unreasonable politics and allow our people continue to suffer. We want to end the suffering of our people to the best of our ability."

Diri also berated those who criticised his administration unfairly, saying they do not mean well for the state.

Project Manager of the construction company, Emrock Concept, Engr. Bolaji Animashaun, explained that the 10km project will be completed in April 2025.

The Boro story!!!

Maior Isaac Adaka Boro was Born on the 10th of September 1938 to Ijaw parents in OLOIBIRI town, Ogbia local government area.

Ironically this was where crude oil was first discovered in commercial quantity in Nigeria in the year 1956. However the proceeds of the multi million dollar discovery was not impacted on the area.

Hence the question that led to the declaration of the Niger Delta Republic by Major Boro and his emissaries.

IYC Demands End To Harassment Of Ijaws, Want Military To Disclose Whereabout Of Jackrich, Tike

-Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) Worldwide

Press Statement

Incessant Invasion, Harrasmenent Of Ijaw Sons, Communities, Whisking Of Jackrich, IYC Demands An End

The attention of the Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) Worldwide has again been drawn to the incessant invasion, harrasmenent and arrest of Ijaw sons in the Nigerian State, particularly on Monday 8th of April 2024 at 3:30am in Osokun, Degema Local Government Area of Rivers State wherein a highly revered Ijaw leader, Amb. Chief Sobomabo Jackrich, popularly known as Egberipapa was arrested and two of his men killed in the process.

A point must be made known that the Ijaws are not second class fiddles in this country, we have sacrificed a lot towards the growth and development of this country and needs not to be treated as a conquered people.

In the last few months, Ijaw lands and her prominent leaders have been invaded, harrassed, arrested and embarrassed for whatever strange reasons by the military that the Ijaw people are yet to know.

The IYC Worldwide was inundated with distress calls from Ijaw Youths all over the World yesterday on how military men with Vans and Armoured Personnel Carrier stormed the Osokun Resident of Amb. Sobomabo Jackrich in Degema Local Government Area of Rivers State wherein two persons were killed and Jackrich was arrested and taken to an unknown destination.

Nigeria is not a banana republic, Nigeria is a country governed by law, whatever we do must be within the ambit of the law, those meant to protect the law must not be seen breaking the law.

Too many Ijaw leaders and critical stakeholders have been killed, harrassed and humiliated in the past few weeks that we are yet to know the reasons behind such attacks and invasions.

In a similar fashion, One Chief Tike Weris, Former Chairman of Bayelsa Waterways Security was brazenly arrested by the Military at The Portharcourt International Airport and up till now, there is no single information about his whereabout and safety. In fact rumours have it that he has been killed in custody. We hope that this rumour is not true.

While the Ijaw Youth Council will continue to champion peace movements in Nigeria and Niger Delta, we will not forget to draw our attention to certain events similar to the Okuama attack on the military in the North and the perceived response from the Military. While we are not against fighting crime in Nigeria, we want this to be done within the ambit of the law.

See details below:

ATTACKS ON THE MILITARY IN THE NORTH;

1) 36 Nigerian soldiers killed in ambush by bandits – Nasarawa 18/08/2023 (Punch)

2) Bandits kill 10 soldiers in NDA attack in Kaduna -5/04/2022 (Al Jazeera)*

3) 17 soldiers feared dead as bandits attack Zamfara community – 25/07/23 (Channels)

4) At least 30 Nigerian soldiers killed in ambush after mine attack in Shiroro Niger state – 3/07/2022 (Reuters)

5) At least 50 Nigerian soldiers killed in a deadly ambush by suspected Boko Haram gunmen in Yobe state – 24/03/2020 (Premium Times)

6) A Lieutenant Colonel in the Nigerian Army and five soldiers have lost their lives in an ambush by the Boko Haram terrorists along Biu-Buni Yadi road, Borno State. April 6th 2024 (Daily Trust).

The Nigerian Military cannot only be powerful in the South and Niger Delta and cannot be seen displaying such might in the North that far stronger crimes are committed by insurgents and other criminal elements.

The IYC is demanding to know the whereabout of Amb. Chief Sobomabo Jackrich who is a former Rivers State Governorship candidate in the last Governorship election in Rivers State and a critical stakeholder and leader in Ijaw nation.

Council have also watched the President Bola Tinubu led Federal Government of Nigeria on how the Military recently went to negotiate with bandits for the release of the 137 Kaduna students and in the process also had a handshake with the bandits instead of enforcement of their rights. Only God knows what would have happened if it where to be in the Niger Delta.

Finally, With the way things are going, the Ijaw people will not be surprised to wake up one day that the military has invaded former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan’s House. This attack on Ijaw leaders is becoming worrisome in the Nigerian State. We demand to know the whereabout and offense of Sobomabo Jackrich. What is the offense of the Ijaw people in the Nigerian State.

Signed;
Amb. Binebai Yerin Princewill
