3 Traps To Avoid In 2024

The most important things in our lives should get the most attention from us. We must learn to keep the main thing the main thing. Stephen Covey called this idea: First Things First.

Unsuccessful people do other things first but Successful people have mastered the art of doing first things first. The common bane of average people is misplaced priority.

Learn to matter where and when it matters the most. You must sit down, meditate and ask yourself questions.

What really deserves my energy and attention at this moment? What is the best possible use of my time? What results will follow me if I continue this way? What should I do differently? Etc.

Time is too precious to be wasted on the wrong things. You don’t even have enough time at your disposal, so wasting it on the wrong things will be a double tragedy.

Avoiding the following traps, will help you to maximize your time effectively.

Trap 1. *Activity Without Productivity*

Don’t get absorbed into businesses that provide no reward. There are things that will steal your time, keep you very busy yet take you away from your dreams. That you are a very busy person doesn’t make you a productive person. Riding a rocking chair doesn’t get you anywhere.

Some activities in life are like the rocking chair. They keep you sweating, working yet making no progress. Can you compare your level of productivity with the amount of work you are putting into life? Invest your time into those things that produce most of your results.

Trap 2. *Urgency Without Importance*

Some needs are very loud and noisy. Some may look like they are tending toward shame. We may quickly respond to the situation just to save face and ego. Sometimes our tendency to protect our egos sabotages our quest to succeed. And if nothing is done; maintaining our egos becomes our paradigm.

Some things may be very urgent. They may demand for urgent attention. They may even threaten to bring us disgrace if nothing is done immediately but the question is, are they really important?

Important things are those things that will move you closer to your dreams. We need to define what the word importance mean to us. You must not respond to everyone or every need. Some pressing needs are mere distractions.

Some things are urgent but not important while others are important but not urgent. However, some things are both urgent and important. You need wisdom to know the difference. Therefore, before you succumb to the pressure of urgency, check whether it is important or not.

If it is not relevant to your purpose and assignment then it is not worth your time and effort.

Trap 3. *Efficiency Without Effectiveness*

Nothing is as painful as investing all your resources into perfecting something that should not have been done at all. It is like achieving a record maximum speed on the wrong route. Driving so fast toward the wrong destination. Before climbing the ladder of success, make sure it is leaning on the right wall.

Efficiency without effectiveness is a dangerous thing.

Efficiency is doing things right. Effectiveness is doing the right thing.

Being good on the wrong Job is efficiency without effectiveness. Being poor on the right job is effectiveness without efficiency. You need to find both to create balance.

The question is not whether you are good at what you do but whether you should be doing what you do in the first place. It is more a matter of destiny than skills and expertise.

You can be so good on the job yet lack a sense of fulfilment and tranquillity because you have embraced efficiency and eschewed effectiveness.
