Today We Also Remember And Honour These Ijaw Men Of Great Courage

These men of courage in 1990, raised the issue of self determination in Nigeria through Gideon Orkar. But the Babangida regime k!lled all of them.

35 years ago, they saw what the people of the Niger-Delta, particularly the Ijaws are seeing today and raised their voices to challenge the ev!l regime.

In the photo below are Late Army Captain Nimibibowei Harley Empere (a PhD holder) and Tarakiri-ijaw born from Agbere, sitting in the middle, who had already escaped to safety after a failed coup that was carried out to overthrow Nigerian then feared military head of state; General Ibrahim Babangida in 1990, but when he heard the news that his Ijaw brother, Late Army Captain Perebo Abeela Dakolo had been caught, Empere went back and submitted himself for ex*****on.

Dakolo reportedly questioned him, why he came back?, it was said that he told Dakolo, that "you are my Ijaw brother, we are soldiers, I can't watch you die alone in the hands of other tribes, if i cannot save you, let me share in your pain and die with you". They were later executed.

The greatest story of having a brother's back.

HISTORY: BONNY, OPOBO DEITIES

The Ibani-Ijaw people in the Eastern Niger Delta like any other culture groups in Nigeria worshipped the under mentioned deities some of which have pockets of followers up to date, despite the fact that Bonny was the gateway through which Christianity penetrated in 1864, and from Bonny into the ancient Niger Delta City States of Nembi and Okrika in 1880; New Calabar, old shipping station in 1874; Bille, Bolo, Ogu, Kalio-Ama, Amadi-Ama and Abulo-Ama in 1883; Brass in 1869; Bakana in 1892; bodo (Ogoni) in 1908; Opobo (Queens Town) in 1890; Chief Sam Oko Epelle Compound in 1891 and Benin River in 2875.

The Ibani foremost deities were: Ibani-nyana-simingi which was the principal tutelary deity of the Ibani people inherited from the Indeginous Inyong Okpon Community (now Tombia), Ikuba, (Opu-Ikuba and Kala-Ikuba) the war deity of Bonny was from the Anyangla people of Andoni, Its totem was the Iguana Lizard. Nungbaw (Numbo) was another deity of the Ibani.

The deity of Tolofari, a very powerful deity of the Kalaibiama community, whose totem was a precious stone was said to be the son of Simingi and Otuburu the tutelary deity of Azuogou in Ndoki. The deity was brought to Peterside (Aya-Ama) by Chief Ipoli when he came down to join his wife, Princess Edimini Kamba-sa (Probably Queen Karibasa).

There were other deities of lesser importance like Kunbupagha, Arukara, Alakiki and Owu-Ekpe stationed at the Coal Beach creek. The totem of Owu-Ekpe was a he-goat. It is believed to be one of the Opu-adumโ€™s powerful messengers. There were also Amakiri the mother earth deity and Torukiki, Opu-Adum was the god of the seas, oceans, rivers. It was dreaded by the people, because victims of this deity were not given proper burial nor were they buried at the normal burial grounds. Moreover, no one inherits the victims belongings, except, the priests of the deity. The deities Tololo, Okolobiebo, Adumta and Ikpali were said to be the wives of Opu-adum, Oje-kurutu was Adumtaโ€™s son; Birikukanana, Ogboloyi Doku (Ogbolodo) and Opu-Panga and Fulosi were Opu-Adumโ€™s daughters. Kondo, Ofombele and Owe-awo wew his (Adumโ€™s) servants.

Adum was said to have had many servants in the spiritual realm and he delegated many to torment men in the physical realm every hour of the day. Many of the water spirits served him. The King of Obubu (probably Ebubu) at the Nun River was Opu-Adumโ€™s closest friend, hence the very close relationship between the Ibani and Nembe ethnic nationalities up to date. Nembe deities Finimaso and Amatemeso gods were also adapted by the Ibani.
It was believed that Tolofari, Atubur and Kungupagha and Arukara deities had moved to Mbambie with the exit of the Opubo and the Anne Pepple Group of Houses to Opobo. Simingi had moved some of its children to the Ekukiri creek with a faction of the Inyongokpon community now known as Tombia in the Kalabari area between 1863 and 1890.

In some Bonny villages the under-listed gods we worshiped. Bonny Island (Okolo-ama): Kala-Ikuba, Numgbo etc, Orupiri. Opu-Ikuba, Peterside (Aya-ama), Fibiribi, Oloma Okoba, Iwo-ama. Adum, Finima. Simingi and Adum gods, Aganya, Aburuka, Ayambuo. Otuburu, Kalaibiama. Tolofari, Fibriri. Alamina, Ayaminima, Okpoma, Obioso, Ndakworo-ama, Finimasoo, Minima, Ekerema, Epelema, Akanja, Eloma (Iloma), Simingi and Amafina and Abalamabie Okpohotumbi.

Though the present two Ibani kingdoms of Bonny and Opobo had been Christianized in the nineteen century; some of the population today still worship the deities. Priests and metaphysicians attest to these deities existence though their influence is less noticeable because of the overwhelming Christian population of Bonny and Opobo Kingdoms. Some deities are transcendental, these invisible beings can still have powerful impact on the lives of those that worship and believe in them. Of all these deities of the ancestors of Ibani people, Simingi, Ikuba, Tolofari and Otuburu were of national prominence. The priests even performed legislative, executive and judicial functions in the states and or communities and even were made co-signatories to some international treaties made with European countries. Some were signatories to local treaties made with sister Delta states, while some appended their hand with the kings and outstanding Chiefs in the state at the early stage of the oversea trade. In fact, priest of deities played important roles in the cultural, economic and social lives of the people then, to the extent that priests were consulted before Ibani people went to war with any other state. Sometimes, to arrive at a decision over serious disputes within communities and families, the priests were consulted. Priests of deities has the last say in communities affairs on matters of life and death. There was the general belief that priests were the physical representatives of the ancestors and the deities, hence there was total obedience by the people to the words and instructions of the priests.

Priests of deities were appointed by the deity itself, and were supposed and presumed to be men of unblemished character, transparent, honest, meek and slow to anger and must be willing to serve the deity and the people. Priests were very wealthy during the oversea trade in Ibani kingdoms of Bonny and Opobo as they competed with the Kings and influential Chiefs in the trade.

However, since the activities these priests were not in consonant with the ideals and objectives of the missionaries and European traders, it was not therefore a coincidence that King Dappa Pepple was deported in 1854 and finally found himself and his family in England defending his fundamental rights. It was also not by accident that Chief Priest Awanta of Ibani-nyana-simingi was captured and deported in 1847, to an unknown destination on trumped up charge of murder and buccaneering. Neither was it surprising that on 21st April, 1867 Ikuba the Bonny national war deity was denounced and the totem Iguana lizards, on Easter day were killed in their hundreds and eaten for the first time as food by the Ibani people. Some of the killed animals blood were sprinkled into all the water wells in Bonny at the orders of King George Pepple a Christian educated in England. That was the end of real worship of deities as a national policy in Ibani kingdoms. Finally, on the 6th of August, 1889 the house of skulls was brought down. The missionaries evangelized, educated and introduced agricultural techniques to the converts.

My Views On The Historic IYC Constitution As Amended:

The IYC over a decade have been battling with a protracted constitutional crisis as a result of the inability of successive administrations failing to enact a robust and acceptable grundnorm for the smooth running of itโ€™s activities. Some presidents attempted, including the previous administration of Peter Igbifa which I served, but ended in a fiasco during the transition.

While I commend the leadership of Sir. Jonathan Lokpobiri for having the courage and the political will to address the constitutional logjam timeously, itโ€™s also important to appreciate the Constitution Drafting Committee ably chaired by my very good friend, Barr. Mathew Ayibakuro Noah for painstakingly doing a thorough and fantastic job.

However, as a critical stakeholder in the Council, itโ€™s my personal view to make two salient observations which was resolved at the Odi Constitutional Convention last year December that was not captured in the draft document.

50 Years Age Limit

It is an anathema to increase the membership age limit of the Council from 45 to 50years. This portrays the IYC as an unprogressive organization as it does not conforms with global benchmarks on who is considered a youth.

Letโ€™s tell our self the honest truth, some whose age have exceeded the 45 years have deliberately refused to retire from the IYC or transit into the INC as they see it as the only platform to achieve personal aggrandizement. Consequent upon this, they are exerting every effort to suffocate the organization. If this monopolistic tendencies are left unchecked, theyโ€™ll successfully annihilate the younger generation from taking their rightful place in the leadership which was bequeathed to us by the founding fathers. However, to invalidate my opinion, let them convince me and others who share my thoughts of the rational behind increasing the age limit to 50 when 45years is even considered unacceptable as youth in some sort.

In furtherance to this, the Ijaw National Congress remains the parent body of the Ijaw Youth Council and therefore, our constitution is supposed to be in relation to that of the INCโ€™s constitution when it comes to the issue of age. Are they now saying that you can be in the IYC at age 50 and still be in the INC at age 45? Does it make any logical sense?

What impact can a 50years old man make in a youth organization when all his productive energy has diminished? Where would he even have the courage and the might to confront and speak against the oppressors of the region if not for self? At age 50, our focus should be more on competing for political positions that will transform the lifeโ€™s of our people and not to drag space with younger people in the IYC.

Itโ€™s preposterous that since 1998, 27years after the Kaiama declaration, some people have refused to exit the scene and take the back stage for younger ones to lead. The should be told to play supportive roles and serve as good examples for the younger generation to emulate. The likes of Maxwell Oko, former chairman of the Central Zone who just celebrated his 50th birthday, Dr. Sammy Ogbuku, former Information Officer of Central Zone whoโ€™ll be 50 this year, Dr. Chris Ekiyo, Udengs Eradiri and โ€œet alโ€ serves as inspiration to me in particular for their remarkable accomplishments in less than 50years.

I refuse to accept that a 50 years old should be addressed as a youth and hold elective position in the IYC. No way! If this is not repealed and the age limit reduced back to 42years as reflected on the draft constitution presented by the Barr Mathew Ayibakuroโ€™s committee, it will be viewed as a self-serving document and the real purpose or clamor for a working document defeated.

Option A4 Mode of Election:

Iโ€™ve sampled the opinions of a lot of people, both inside and outside the IYC of the advantages and disadvantages of option A4 mode of elections, honestly, the preponderances of the opinions are in support of this mode as they believe it will reduce cost drastically in our elections.

While I agree with them to an extent, I still believe that the Open Secret Balloting mode of election was not the problem, but the quality and characters of the delegates selected and presented before a National Elective Convention by the Zones and Chapters was. Majority of this delegates, especially some Clan Chairmen who are neophytes in the Council, come into a national election as delegates with the sole purpose of selling their votes to the highest bidder after milking from virtually every other contestant. To them, competence, capacity and the character needed to become a national officer and deliver on the job is not considered, but rather your dip pocket. This is the crux of the matter and I stated it during the Public Hearing of the Constitution Drafting Committee at Ijaw House last year.

Option A4 in my considered opinion is not the best solution to curbing vote buying in our elections. It is obsolete and not modern. This process will be easier to determine the outcome of the elections.

For example, someone in authority and influence can call all the delegates in his zone, induce them financially and direct them to cue behind his or her preferred candidates in the election. Of course they(delegates) will carry out the instruction in other not to be in the bad books of that leader or system and loose benefits afterwards. This will make the elections less interesting and less competitive.

Whereas, an open secret ballot is more competitive, healthier and vibrant. People can supposedly collect money randomly and those with conscience can still cast their votes for their preferred choice of candidate secretly even when directed to do otherwise by their benefactors. As a matter of fact, a vote is supposed to be sacred and not to the knowledge of the public.

However, if the sole purpose of the option A4 was to reduce cost, the best option to achieving that is through Electronic mode of voting. It is technological, more universally acceptable, less expensive and more transparent. Thatโ€™s exactly what the INC did in the election that produced Prof. Benjamin Okabaโ€™s leadership and we all saw how transparent and cost effective it was. This mode of election gives delegates, especially those in the diaspora chapter the opportunity to be in the comforts of their destinations and cast their votes freely without any compulsion or passing through the stress of coming to the convention venue.

Conclusively, the composition of the delegates is key. The delegate in my view should be expanded beyond the agreed number in the Odi Convention to accommodate statutory delegates made up of former Presidents, Secretary Generals, Spokesmen, National Women leaders, Parliament Speakers, Zonal and Chapter Chairmen who are still within the Councilโ€™s age limit. This set of category of delegates have sufficient knowledge about the Council and can not be easily induced financially to do the bidding of someone who is not fit and proper to lead.
