The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has arrested four suspects in connection with the theft of four state Fire Service trucks.

State Commissioner of Police, CP Baba Azare, disclosed this during a press briefing at the command headquarters in Uyo on Monday.

He revealed that the trucks had been stolen and taken to Port Harcourt, Rivers State, but were recovered following credible information. Investigations showed the trucks were leased to multinational companies at ₦140,000 per truck per day since 2021. The arrangement was due to end in 2024.

The Commissioner confirmed that the suspects would soon face prosecution, while the recovered trucks have been returned to the government for public service. Efforts are ongoing to apprehend other individuals linked to the case.

In other breakthroughs, the command also arrested suspects involved in transformer vandalization, the kidnapping of a Ministry of Justice official, and the r**e of a minor. Notably, a transformer belonging to Sure Foundation Polytechnic in Ukanafun was vandalized, resulting in losses valued at ₦4.3 million. Two suspects were arrested in connection with this incident.

Additionally, the command rescued a kidnapped director and his niece unharmed from a hideout in Abak Local Government Area. Two suspects were arrested, and the vehicle used in the abduction was recovered.

The police reiterated their commitment to tackling crime and ensuring safety across the state.

President Bola Tinubu has urged Africa to leverage its resources, people, and capacity for self-development, emphasizing the need for increased intra-African trade and collaboration.

The President made this call during a meeting with Rwandan President Paul Kagame in Abu Dhabi, UAE, where both leaders are attending the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week from January 12 to 18.

In a post on his X handle, Tinubu stated, “Africa has what it takes to develop itself. The time for Africa is now.”

The summit, themed “The Nexus of Next: Supercharging Sustainable Progress,” focuses on accelerating sustainable development globally. President Tinubu is expected to highlight his administration's reforms in energy efficiency, transportation, public health, and economic growth.

The visit, at the invitation of UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, also includes discussions on strengthening Nigeria-UAE relations and exploring economic opportunities.

The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFund) has approved ₦20,075,050,006.55 for disbursement to 192,906 students in public tertiary institutions nationwide.

Bayero University, Kano, leads the beneficiaries with ₦1.3 billion allocated to 11,683 students, followed by the University of Maiduguri, where 12,198 students will share ₦1.27 billion. Other major beneficiaries include the University of Jos (₦941m for 6,988 students) and Federal University Dutsin-Ma (₦909m for 8,978 students).

Smaller institutions, such as Gombe State Polytechnic and Abia State Polytechnic, have fewer recipients, with allocations of ₦122,000 and ₦106,300, respectively.

NELFund’s Managing Director, Akintunde Sawyerr said the Agency had previously disbursed N110bn to students nationwide. As of January 1, 2025, the disbursement update highlights the fund's ongoing efforts to financially support Nigerian students.

The Lagos State Special Offences Court in Ikeja has ruled that it has jurisdiction to hear allegations of corruption, gratification, and fraudulent receipt of property leveled against the former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele.

Delivering the ruling on Wednesday, Justice Rahman Oshodi stated that the prosecution, led by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), had successfully established the court’s territorial jurisdiction to entertain counts 8 to 20 of the 26-count charge against Emefiele.
