Humanitarian Affairs Ministry, CCCRN to Partner on Support for Vulnerable HIV-Affected Households
As part of efforts to deepen humanitarian interventions in the State, the Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs, Hon. Emem Ibanga, has pledged the ministry’s readiness to collaborate with the Centre for Clinical Care and Clinical Research (CCCRN) in support of vulnerable households affected by HIV.
Hon. Ibanga gave the assurance on Wednesday, June 25, 2025, when she received in courtesy, top management officials from the Centre for Clinical Care and Clinical Research (CCCRN), implementers of the USAID-supported THRIVE Project.
Welcoming the delegation in her office in Uyo, the Honourable Commissioner acknowledged the impactful work undertaken by the Centre, lauding the THRIVE Project, which focuses on improving the health and well-being of children living with HIV, as well as supporting affected households.
She described the THRIVE Project as a timely initiative, commending its focus on vulnerable children and adolescents, while averring that the Ministry is pleased to engage with stakeholders committed to humanitarian advancement.
Assuring the team of the ministry's willingness to collaborate closely with CCCRN for the overall benefit of Akwa Ibom people, the Humanitarian boss said,
“We are happy to meet with you, and we will partner with you. Your agency has a lot to offer our people, especially in the area of humanitarian and social welfare support for vulnerable households."
Responding to the team’s request for collaboration, particularly in the inclusion of HIV-affected households in the ministry’s intervention programmes and the provision of nutritional support for malnourished children and adolescents living with HIV, the Commissioner stressed the importance of such efforts.
She highlighted the role of the Bulk Purchase Agency, which, under the directive of Governor Pastor Umo Eno, periodically provides food support to rural and vulnerable communities across the State.
While observing that these interventions provide temporary relief, Hon. Ibanga noted that His Excellency, the Governor, has consistently emphasized the need for sustainable solutions to food insecurity, which is agriculture. She therefore encouraged residents to embrace farming as a pathway to food security and cited her personal example of supplementing household needs with produce from her own farm.
Earlier, the Chief of Party, THRIVE Project, Dr. Faith Lannap, stated that the visit was to formally introduce the THRIVE initiative to the Ministry and to explore avenues for strategic collaboration.
She explained that the project is a five-year USAID-funded initiative to be implemented across 16 States, including Akwa Ibom. The project, according to her, aims at improving the wellbeing of children living with HIV, reducing vulnerability among HIV-affected households and addressing HIV-related risks among uninfected children, adolescents, and young people.
Dr. Lannap, added that the project also seeks to ensure that households have adequate access to resources and empowered to overcome hardships, stigma, and poor access to essential services.
She further disclosed that the implementation in Akwa Ibom will span all 31 Local Government Areas with the support of five civil society organizations.
Commending the State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, for establishing the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Lannap described the move as visionary and strategic in aligning humanitarian responses at the State with the federal, and expressed optimism for a fruitful partnership with the ministry.
Present at the meeting were; the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Mrs. Eno Akpan; Director of Administration and Supplies, Mr. Edwin James; Deputy Chief of Party, Dr. Kabiru Usman; Director of Programmes, Dr. Fatima Ajonye; Director of Strategic Information, Mr. Stanley Amadiegwu; Director of Finance, Mr. Sam Audu; and the Associate Director/State Team Lead, Dr. Michael Ejeh.
