A'Ibom Govt, Nigeria Army to Partner On Affordable Housing

Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno has declared readiness of the State government to partner with the Nigerian Army to provide affordable housing for personnel which they continue to use on retirement

The Governor made this known during a courtesy visit by a team of the Post-Service Housing Development Limited (PHDL), led by the MD/CEO, Major General J. D. Omali.

Governor Eno commended the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant-General Taoreed Lagbaja, for the initiative which he described as laudable adding that it was necessary to provide such facility for post-service retirement given the nature of tremendous service they render to the nation.

According to him, "I am a security-conscious person. I belong to the security community and I am always worried when I see our people go through all they go through and when they retire, within three months of exit, they are given three months to leave the barracks, and the question is always, "to where?"

"This is a very laudable project and we believe our State should be able to key into this. The process of acquiring the land itself, 200 hectares is a huge commitment for the State, and I believe that if we can do that, we have contributed our quota to the project, and it will also show that we care for our service men.

"We will do all we can to help you achieve this. It may not be in one location, but we will do our best to find you land," he said.

Speaking further, the Governor said, "the beauty of Akwa Ibom is that wherever you have a land, you can reach Uyo within one hour. We have one of the best road networks in this country and so, there is no place you can say is local anymore in our state. We are doing the best we can to integrate all our local governments areas with the centre"

Earlier in his remarks, the MD/CEO, Major General J. D. Omali said PHDL was established to alleviate the hardship faced by officers and soldiers in securing decent housing after retiring or being discharged from service.

He noted that the body was established in1996 as a welfare scheme with the primary objective of providing houses or plots of land for officers and soldiers on retirement.

Omali maintained that since its establishment, the company now has 34 estates across the country designed to accommodate both military and civilian subscribers in the ratio of 60:40 so as not to have a repeat of the army barracks.

He commended Governor Umo Eno for his laudable development strides since inception, and appealed to the State to partner with PHDL especially through the provision of land to enable it achieve its objective in the State.

The MD/CEO was accompanied by Lt. Col. S. Eche (DMD), Barr Paul Edeh (Company Secretary), Dr. Kayode Akinade and Col. K.A Umoh, Retd.

ARISE Shelter Initiative:
A'Ibom Govt Targets 100 Houses for Poorest of the Poor
.. We're here to affect Lives - Gov Umo Eno

Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno has stated that, under the ARISE Shelter Initiative, government intends to build at least, 100 houses for the poorest of the poor across the 31 local government areas of the State.

Speaking at the State House monthly prayer service held at the Latter House Chapel, he noted that the initiative was necessitated by the pathetic nature of places some Akwa Ibom families are living.

He said that the initiative was devoid of political sentiments, stressing that a team from the humanitarian office was commissioned to visit all the local government areas in the State and select the worst among such structures for consideration.

Governor Eno who said his mission in the Hilltop Mansion is to positively affect lives, noted "there are people that, if you see the houses that they live, you will weep. In our villages, most of those elderly people are suffering. We are building one house in each Local Government for now. We call them Arise Shelters. Just two bedroom flats.

"We are building them for those widows and less privileged people. We have seen a woman that when it rains, she sits there and shivers in the rain, and she has like eight children. So why can't we build a shelter for her? She is an Akwa Ibomite, she lives here, so government has taken the liberty to build a shelter for her with solar lights and borehole.

"These people too deserve a good life. It is their houses, it belongs to them. We will finish and hand over to them. This initiative too will create jobs for people in that local Government Areas. The contractors will come from that environment; so it is a way of also keeping our local artisans busy.

Our target is that we should be able to build at least a hundred houses in this segment, may be within two or three years we would do more.

Speaking on the developments in the bulk purchase initiative, he disclosed that the beneficiaries will no longer pay any percentage of the amount on the food voucher. All they would need to do will be to present those vouchers and get the foodstuff while government defrays the cost.

He said all these interventions were palliatives by the State government adding that it also intends give some cash support to select persons in the social register, through AK-Cares, to help cushion the effect of the current economic hardship.

The Governor commended the team of medical personnel handling the free medical outreach for a successful outing at Ikot Ekpene, saying that 550 surgeries were conducted as well as other medical services.

He announced that the team will be in Eket by second week of April to attend to people in that Senatorial District.

While urging everyone to continue to support the programmes and policies of government, he prayed that God will continue to grant open doors to the State to enable it actualise its agenda for its citizenry.

Earlier in his message on 'Open Doors', Most Rev'd Emmanuel Udofia of the Methodist Church, advised Akwa Ibomites, especially Christians not to run down or blackmail anyone in the quest to succeed.

Taking his text from Revelation 3:8, "I know your works. See, I have set before you an open door,
and no one can shut it;
for you have a little strength, have kept My word, and have not denied My name," he assured that as long as the State continues to keep to God's words, the State will continue to enjoy open doors.

A'IBOM GOVT RENEWS BID TO ACTUALIZE IBOM DEEP SEAPORT PROJECT
.. repositions implementation committee

There are renewed hopes towards the actualisation of the Ibom Deep Seaport, as Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, moves to reposition the technical committee in charge of the implementation of the project.

As part of efforts in this direction, the governor took members of the Technical Committee on the Implementation of Ibom Deep Seaport round the new office accommodation assigned to them on the third floor of Dakkadda Towers, the state-owned 21-storey smart building on Udo Udoma Banking Layout, Uyo.

According to the governor, who rose from a meeting with the committee and some technical partners, the move to allocate the new office space to the committee was necessitated by the need to avail them with requisite and befitting infrastructure to aid the realization of the Deep Seaport project in line with resolutions at the meeting.

He assured that with the steps taken by the State government in recent times, including the award of contract for construction of the 13.6Km Orukim-Unyenghe-Universal Energy Road to Ibom Deep Seaport site, the allocation of the new befitting accommodation among others, pursuit for the Seaport project was back on track.

"We have been working on the Ibom Deep Seaport, but I think it is now time for us to revitalize that committee. So today we had a meeting to do a proper review of all our outstanding matters. They didn't have a befitting office, so government has now brought them here to have one. We are going to begin to have investors come in and all of that.

"I think we have had a good discussion and we have commenced the whole process again. What I can say is that we are all ready now, we are back and you will begin to see activities geared towards the realization of the Ibom Deep Seaport," the governor stated.

On her part, the Chairman, Technical Committee on the Implementation of Ibom Deep Seaport, Mrs. Mfon Usoro, thanked the governor for the office accommodation and other forms of support to the committee which she described as a demonstration of his commitment to the project.

She affirmed that, the project will not only place Akwa Ibom State on the global maritime map, but serve as a major economic gateway to West and Central Africa.

Mrs. Usoro maintained that, with Governor Umo Eno's gesture, committee members and consultants are rejuvenated to work even more assiduously towards the accomplishment of the project.

AKWA IBOM FIRST LADY SPLASHES CASH, MEDICARE, GIFTS ON 600 ELDERLY

600 elders in Akwa Ibom State have each received N50,000 as part of the ARISE Initiative For The Elderly, a programme designed by the State Government to identify the priority needs of senior citizens and to cater to such needs.

Speaking on Tuesday, March 12, 2024, at the maiden edition of the programme tagged 'Celebrating Our Parents', held at Government House Banquet Hall, Uyo, wife of Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Patience Umo Eno, applauded her husband, the Governor for initiating the programme.

Pastor Patience Eno explained that the programme which was created after Akwa Ibom State had carried out the directive given to wives of Governors in the country by Nigeria's First Lady, to host a similar programme in all the 36 states of the country, said. The programme which would hold monthly, is expected to help cushion the effects of the hardship experienced by senior citizens.

She prayed that the beneficiaries of the programme would live long in good health to continue to enjoy all the benefits the government has in store for them.

"I want to pray that the Lord continue to strengthen you. May He keep you well, strong and sound even at 100 years old. You will all live beyond 100 years old. You will not leave us just yet," she said.

Setting the tone for the event, the Coordinator of the ARISE Initiative for the elderly, Mrs. Mercy Eka, said the event marks the beginning of monthly programmes for the elderly.

She said the scheme which was conceived in support the Renewed Hope Initiative of the wife of the President, has been domesticated in the State to reach out to different sets of senior citizens every month, with provisions made for the elderly of other tribes resident in Akwa Ibom.

Mrs Eka said 600 elderly persons for the maiden edition of the ARISE Initiative were selected from all the wards in the 31 Local Government Areas of the state to receive stipends and medical care, assuring that more senior citizens would be accommodated.

Goodwill messages were received from the Presidents of the Women's Forum from Uyo Senatorial District, Dr. Ekaette Ebong; Eket Senatorial District, Mrs. Idara Akpan; and Ikot Ekpene Senatorial District, Mrs. Inibehe Silas, who extended their gratitude to the Governor Umo Eno, for spearheading the meaningful initiative to honour the elderly in the State irrespective of tribe, religion, enthnicity or political lines.

Presenting a vote of thanks on behalf of beneficiaries of the ARISE Initiative for the Elderly, Chief Ime Okon applauded the Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Pastor Umo Eno for his inclusive governance style, while also commending the Governor's wife, Pastor Patience Umo Eno, for aligning with the vision of her husband, believing that the ARISE Agenda will bring about rapid development, growth and stability in the state.

The event which was preceded by a medical outreach to cater for the health needs of the elderly, featured dancing competition by the Elderly above 80 years and other fun activities, including performances by children of the Divine Children’s home and Ibom Acapella group.

The ARISE Initiative Elderly Support programme which is domiciled in the office of the wife of the Governor, was initiated by Governor Umo Eno, in support of the Renewed Hope Initiative Elderly Support Scheme of Nigeria's First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, to provide succour to the elderly through providing medical services and money to enhance their welfare.

BOB OPENS UP ON TRANSPARENCY IN FOOD SUBSIDY IMPLEMENTATION

As the bill for an act to establish the Akwa Ibom State bulk purchase agency awaits Governor Umo Eno’s assent on Thursday, citizens have again be assured of transparency in the implementation process of the food subsidy initiative.

The Commissioner for Economic Development, Mr. Emem Bob while giving the assurance in a live television interview in Uyo, said the initiative designed to cushion the effect of high cost of living on the citizenry, will witness the distribution of vouchers to the targeted beneficiaries, through the Personal Assistants to the Governor, across the 368 wards of the state.

Speaking on the progress of the proposed agency, Mr Bob said the state government having met with the leadership of the Traders, is currently selecting the agents for accreditation.

“The agency when constituted will involve competent traders who after capacity validation, will be chosen to man branded shops and redemption centers located in select markets across the 31 local government areas of the State.

“The agents will not be an all-comers affairs, they will be thoroughly selected. After validation, all accredited agents will be made to sign an agreement with the bulk purchase agency while their names will be duly published for the masses to know. Like in the AK-CARES program, the social register will be used, therefore, there will be no room for ‘man know man’.

“Also, the state government is planning to have a buffer warehouse where food will be bought and stocked against anybody that would want to sabotage the good intention of the government. The government is not coming to crash prices for other traders, rather we are going to work with them.

“For the accredited agents, there is also some incentives in place for them. During reconciliation of vouchers, a certain percentage will be made available to them as motivation in addition to their other entitlement.

“There is enough plan on ground for public enlightenment. By the time this initiative is launched, the entire Akwa Ibom will be proud of the man the voted as the Governor”, said Mr Bob.

AKSG GIVES MORE HINTS ON BULK PURCHASE AGENCY
…TIPS FARMERS FOR BETTER DAYS AHEAD

Farmers in the State will be in an advantaged position of having their farm produce procured at favourable prices, through the Bulk Purchase Agency.

The hint was made known today, 11th March, 2024 by the Commissioner for Agriculture & Rural Development, Dr. Offiong Offor during Matters Arising, a Radio Program on Inspiration 105.9 FM, Uyo, saying the agency will off-take staple food at a profitable price.

Offor noted that, the agency will source for food inward and if it's not sufficient, they'll get more from outside for sale at affordable rates to the general public.

She therefore, advised Akwa Ibom populace to take advantage of the opportunity by engaging actively in practical agriculture, as more production will bring about reduction in the prices of food items.

The Agriculture Boss was emphatic about farmers to form cooperative societies, where they'll put resources together, be exposed to information and current trends, in order to increase productivity.

On the time frame of the agency, Offor said the intervention agency will continue to function until when normalcy is achieved.

Speaking further, the Commissioner for Economic Development, Mr. Emem Bob said the agency will involve traders union, who will serve as agents contracted to man branded shops located in different markets in the State.

He reasoned that, the exercise will be transparent by distributing vouchers for purchase of food items through the Personal Assistants to the Governor in the wards across the State.

Bob, stated that, certified agents will sign agreement with the agency and names officially published in public domain for people to purchase the food items.

To achieve a successful process, a few days ago Governor Umo Eno met with market leaders and other stakeholders.

The Commissioner for Education, Mrs Idongesit Etiebiet who made this disclosure in an interview with newsmen in her office in Uyo, said the amount was initial payments for 48,797 candidates participating in the sub regional examination this year.

She gave the breakdown of the amount to cover NIN registration fee, biometric registration, funds for administrative cost, as well as 50% of the WASSCE fee.

GOVERNOR ENO FLAGS-OFF ROADS CONSTRUCTION IN OBOT AKARA, ESSIEN UDIM AND ETIM EKPO LGAs
.. Receives Plaudits as ‘Father of Rural Development’

In keeping to his campaign promise of connecting the dots especially in the area of rural development, in line with the ARISE Agenda, Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Pastor Umo Eno has flagged-off road construction projects to re-connect communities in Obot Akara, Essien Udim and Etim Ekpo local government areas.

The roads flagged - off include 11.71Km Abiakpo Ikot Otu-Atan Ibong-Usaka Annang Road and Nto Ndang-Nto Ekpu road Road, with two bridges, each spanning 15 metres, and 16km Midim Atan-Ikot Inyang-Ikot Akpan Ekpeyong-Etok Uruk Eshiet-Ikot Imonte road, with 30 metres span bridge, linking some villages in Essien Udim and Etim Ekpo Local Government Areas.

Speaking at the flag-off ceremony of the Essien Udim - Etim Ekpo access road at St. Paul’s Primary School Midim, Essien Udim, Governor Umo Eno said his administration is committed to the promise made during his campaign and urged the people to exercise patience as every part of the State will benefit from his administration.

He reaffirmed his commitment to selecting and undertaking projects primarily on the basis of impact and benefits to the generality of the people, rather than satisfying and serving individual’s interest.

Governor Eno noted that he was moved by the sad stories of the community and especially, the "pregnant-women-swallowing-bridge" as was told by one of the community members, and assured that such sad tales will become history within the shortest time.

He stressed that the 16Km Essien Udim-Etim Ekpo road and the bridge projects had no political motivation, but a pointer to his administration's sensitivity to the plight of the people, especially the women and children who had been exposed to avoidable risk by using the collapsed road and bridge.

According to him, "we didn't come to do this projects based on political reasons. It is God that directs the government on this road project, not any politician.

“We are connecting two local government areas by this project.

"We want to thank our brother, Celestine Mel who has used his God-given talents to attract this project here.

“If you know this man, he is a critic in every sense, but I don't have a problem with criticism, so far it's very constructive and will bring good to the people, not just abusing the government.

"We want to thank you for drawing our attention to this road and to the various accidents and incidents that have occured here. We believe that by the Grace of God, all that will cease," he said. This road when completed, will connect the people of Essien Udim with their kith and kins in Etim Ekpo Local Government Area.

At the Abiakpo Ikot Otu-Atan Ibong-Usaka Annang Road and Nto Ndang-Nto Ekpu road Road, in Obot Akara Local Government Area, the Governor who was moved by the outpouring of love and gratitude by the people also approved the construction of a model primary healthcare facility to replace the dilapidated Usaka Health Centre project initiated during the military era.

The Village Head, Eteidung Williamson Ndarake, had made a passionate plea to the Governor to intervene on the health facility and his request was instantly granted, with people responding with a roar of gratitude.

In their remarks,
the members representing Etim Ekpo/Ika and Essien Udim State Constituencies, Chief Mfon Idung, and Prince Ukpong Akpabio respectively, as well as the transition chairmen of Essien Udim and Etim Ekpo, Dr. Anthony Luke, and Mr. Ekpuk Eshiet as well as a social critic Mr. Celestine Mel, expressed gratitude to the Governor for the heartwarming intervention and assured of their people’s continuous support for full actualisation of the ARISE Agenda.

On his part, the Paramount Ruler of Essien Udim, HRM Obong Cosmas Akpan, also expressed profound gratitude to the Governor and prayed for God's blessings and guidance to the governor.

At Obot Akara event which was attended by a cross- section of political stakeholders in the local government area, such as a the former Deputy Governor, Senator Chris Ekpenyong, the Commissioner for Youth and Sport, Sir. Monday Uko, Transition Committee Chairman of Obot Akara, Anietie Ibritam, the village head of Usaka, Chief Williamson Ndarake, they all noted that Usaka had been a hugely neglected community as its only access road was by going through the neighbouring Abia State.

While harping that it was the first time the community was blessed with such a high profile visitor, they appreciated the Governor for the intervention saying that the rural development component of the ARISE Agenda was indeed bearing fruits.

To further convey their gratitude, the youths of Essien Udim presented the Governor with a “ Father of Rural Development Award”.

For the people of the three local government areas in Ikot Ekpene Senatorial District, the flag- off of those two critically important roads means Governor Umo Eno is truly a promise keeper.

The two roads have been awarded to indigenous contractors, Tenth Investments handling the Obot Akara project while Nsik Engineering is awarded the Essien Udim-Etim Ekpo Road project.
