INDEPENDENT NATIONAL ELECTORAL COMMISSION DISPEL YAKUBU’S DEATH RUMOUR

Irked by the increasing rumour of the death of the National Chairman of Independent National Electoral Commission Prof Mahmood Yakubu, his Chief Press Secretary Mr Rotimi Oyekanmi has issued a press release, indicating that his boss is alive, hale and hearty.

“Our attention has been drawn to a fake news narrative circulated by a section of the social media claiming the purported death of the INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu at a London hospital. The story first appeared on Monday, 9th December 2024.

“We hereby appeal to the public to disregard the rumour. Prof. Yakubu is alive, hale and hearty. In fact, he has not travelled to London in the last two years. He was present at an interactive meeting with the House of Representatives Committee on Electoral Matters on Wednesday, 11th December 2024. He also chaired the Commission’s meeting with Resident Electoral Commissioners on Thursday, 12th December 2024. Both events were widely covered on television and reported on the front pages of most newspapers yesterday, Friday 13th December 2024.

“The public may recall that mischief-makers on the social media carried a similar fake story in 2021. Three years later, they are spreading the same rumour again.

“Those who indulge in this practice, as well as those who spread it, should be mindful of its effect not only on the individual but also the wider society.

“The Commission will continue to work with genuine media professionals to combat the scourge of fake news and the danger it poses to society”.

CONCERNS AS NON-COMMUNICABLE DISEASES CLAIM 684,000 LIVES IN NIGERIA

The death of 684,000 Nigerians, resulting from Non Communicable Diseases, (NCDs), annually has become a source of concern by stakeholders.

The increase in the Non Communicable Diseases was also attributed to excess consumption of salt and sugar related foods.

Recall that over the years, Nigerians have been battling with infectious diseases such as cholera, Human Immuno Virus, HIV, tuberculosis among others, and this may have accounted for why Non Communicable diseases have not been given necessary attention by either government or the public.

SECURITY REPORT DECLARES 2024 AS WORST STATE OF INSECURITY IN TEN YEARS

…OCTOBER RECORDS 971 NIGERIANS ABDUCTED

BY CHRISTIAN NfWOKOCHA

There are indications that no fewer than 971 Nigerians were abducted across Nigeria in October 2024, just as the security operatives claim to be on top of the security situation in the country.

It also appears that 2024 has the highest record of kidnapping, killings, disappearances and violence occasioned by the activities of the state and non state actors.

Recall that a new suspected terror group “Lakurawa” emerged less than one month ago, operating within the Northwestern part of the country.

According to the October 2024 Nigeria Security Report by Beacon Security and Intelligence Limited, BSIL, being the security risk management and intelligence consulting company, it revealed security statistics of the just concluded month of October 2024.

The report panted a picture of worsening security situation, incidents, abductions and casualties across the country.

The focus on the month of October resulted from the persistent violent activities, including killings and kidnapping for ransom by bandits, terror gangs and the separatists within the month under review.

The country recorded a 51% rise in fatalities and increased abduction by 24.42%. The BEACON INTEL showed that Nigeria recorded 861 security incidents, representing 64.92% (559), attributed to security threats, 24.79% (215) consisted of security forces operations, and 4.99% (43) were attributed to safety incidents from October 1-31, 2024.

Month of October also recorded 1545 fatalities, with 67.70% attributed to civilian deaths, 25.89% to criminals/non-state armed groups (NSAGs), and 6.40% attributed to security forces and 971 individuals reportedly abducted.

The North East and North West regions accounted for 52.03% of the total incidents, whereas the South East reported the fewest incidents of 7.78%.

POWER MINISTER, ADELABU BATTLES TO RESTORE PROLONGED BLACKOUT IN NIGERIA’S NORTHERN STATES

Just as power outage lingers for more than 11 days in Northern Nigerian states, the power Minister Adebayo ADELABU has promised to restore power in the area despite calls for his sack by the President of Nigeria Consumer Protection Network, Kunle Olubiyo.

North East and North West of Northern Nigeria have been in darkness since October 19, 2024 due to National grid collapse, an outage which also affected other parts of Nigeria, including Imo State.

The collapse of the national grid was attributed to the activities of insurgents in the area who are involved in the vandalisation of shiroro-Kaduna transmission line.

ALVAN UNIVERSITY VOWS TO IMPLEMENT NUC STANDARDS, DEBUNKS TENSION AND DEMOTION RUMOURS

One of the oldest academic institutions in Nigeria which metamorphosed from teachers training school to a university status, Alvan Ikoku Federal University of Education has said that it will implement and maintain all National Universities Commission’s guidelines in her transformation programmes.

The university also revealed that in the cause of full transition from College of Education to University of Education, all the staff by their grade levels would be affected downwards to meet the necessary university academic standards globally.

This perhaps accounted for why a section of the public perceived the strict implementation of the university guidelines as demotion and capable of brewing tension on campus.
