Zanzibar Part 3 (subtitles added)
Do you know your African history?
Did you know that Zanzibar was the major slave port in the East Africa Indian Ocean slave trade.
Zanzibar is a top tourist destination in Africa today and if you visit Zanzibar without experiencing stone town you're wrong. Behind that exotic holiday location lies a dark history; the centre of the Indian Ocean slavery in East Africa
10 centuries before the transatlantic slave trade in West Africa and 7 centuries before any recorded history of Europeans in Africa, were the Arabs in East Africa. By the 15th century, the Portuguese had arrived in Zanzibar given to the booming market in spices and ivory. Of course they came with their religion as well. This port established in stone town which would later be largely controlled by the Omani were used to sell slaves across India, China, Middle East and even to the Americas. Eventually the British took over in 1890 to abolish slave trade in Zanzibar which followed the Anglo-Zanzibar war in 1896 known as the shortest war in history.
In 1963 Zanzibar gained her independence from the British, leading to the bloody Zanzibar revolution one month after in Jan 1964
Today Zanzibar is a semi-autonomous region subsumed into Tanzania as a country.
