**Dangote’s Refined Petrol to Hit Market Soon Amid Pricing Concerns**

Dangote’s refined petrol is set for distribution and sale before the end of the month, a highly anticipated development since the commissioning of the Dangote refinery in May 2023. As the first private enterprise to sell petrol to Nigerians, many hoped that Dangote’s product would drive competitive pricing in the market. However, a report by Punch newspaper suggests this might not happen.

Marketers are concerned that the price of Dangote petrol may be higher than expected. This is because the Dangote Refinery is purchasing crude oil from the United States and other countries at a higher cost, the same factor that has made Dangote diesel and aviation fuel expensive.

Interviews conducted by Punch with various marketers revealed that the cost of imported crude oil could increase production expenses, potentially raising the ex-depot price of Dangote’s petrol. If this happens, it would be a blow to Nigerian consumers, who have already seen petrol prices surge from an average of N200 to N700 within a year, with the Dangote refinery initially offering hope for price reductions.

In May 2023, during President Bola Tinubu’s inauguration, he announced the immediate removal of fuel subsidies, which caused a significant price hike in the market for this essential commodity.

Marketers’ Concerns

In an interview with Punch, Hammed Fashola, the National Vice President of the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria, expressed concern that crude imports would raise the price of Dangote petrol.

“When he keeps bringing crude oil from the United States, that is another cost. That is another problem we are scared of because it will still boil down to the high cost of petrol, unlike sourcing the crude locally in Nigeria,” Fashola stated.

He advised that the government should assist Dangote in securing an adequate local supply of crude oil to mitigate these costs.
