The Commissioner For Insurance and Chief Executive Officer of the National Insurance Commission, NAICOM Mr. Sunday Thomas has enjoined federal and state governments to begin to make adequate provisions for insurance of public buildings and buildings under construction in their respective annual budgets.

He said these categories of insurance are made compulsory by extant insurance laws in Nigeria and, thus, must be complied with by all.

According to Thomas, Section 64 of the Insurance Act 2003 makes it mandatory for individuals, governments and corporate organisations that undertake the construction of any building above two (2) floors to procure a builder's liability insurance policy (building under construction) from any of the NAICOM' licensed Insurer in Nigeria.

Speaking further, he said Section 65 of the Insurance Act 2003 also makes it compulsory for all public buildings in the country to be insured. This is to protect innocent victims in the events of accidents and other disasters that may occur while they are within such premises.

Mr. Thomas spoke today at the 12th meeting of the National Council of Lands, Housing and Urban Development, holding in Kaduna State. Participants at the session include the Honourable Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Arc. Ahmed Musa Dangiwa; Minister of State, Housing and Urban Development, Abdullah Tijjani Gwarzo; Chairman, Senate Committee on Housing and Urban Development, Sen. Aminu Tambuwal; Chairman, House Committee on Housing and Habitat, Hon. Balele Aminu and Chairman, House Committee on Urban Development and Regional Planning, Hon. Abiante Awaji, The Permamnent Secretary, Federal Minstry of Works and Housing, Mahmuda Mamman; Commissioners, Permanent Secretaries, Directors of Lands and Housing from the 36 States of the federation; Managing Director of Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria, Nigeria Mortgage Refinancing Company, Shelter Afrique, etc.

Mr. Thomas urged the various state governments to emulate the Lagos State government by domesticating the insurance laws in their respective states.

He listed some of the benefits from compliance with these compulsory insurances to the Federal and State Governments to include
1. Reduction in the Federal and State Government expenditure in event of disaster that may affect citizens by shifting the burden to the risk-bearers (Insurance Companies), hence restoration would not be settled from tax payer’s money
2. Creation of employment opportunities for citizens of the State
3. Opportunity for enhancing the Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) of the respective states amongst others.

Young Man Kills Girlfriend In Umuahia,Abia State (Photo)

A young man identified as Chigozie has allegedly killed his girlfriend in Ajata Ibeku Village, Abia State, Igbere TV has learnt.

Our correspondent gathered that the ugly incident happened on Wednesday night.

According to a source in the village who pleaded anonymity, the man after killing the girl decided to dump the body inside bush but was apprehended in the process.

According to the source, "We were shocked when the boy passed us with his Keke (tricycle) with full speed. I told my brother that I saw something inside the Keke that looked like dead body".

"We decided to follow him without his notice until he entered inside the bush to dump the body then we caught him red-handed."

However, another source in the community told our correspondent different story about how the man allegedly killed his girlfriend.

According to him," She was his girlfriend and they were fighting suddenly she tripped and hit her face on the floor."

"The guy didn't remove any body part."

Meanwhile, as at time of filing this report, efforts by IgbereTV to get the reaction of Abia State Police Command proved abortive.

MOTION ON: URGENT NEED TO INVESTIGATE THE DELAY IN THE COMPLETION OF UMUAHIA-UMUDIKE-IKOT EKPENE, ABA-IKOT-EKPENE, AND ABA-OSISIOMA TO PORTHARCOURT ROADS.

In his legacy Motion, moved Tuesday, July 11, 2023, the Distinguished Senator Darlington Nwokocha described the above roads as critical National assets, which are central to the socio-economic nerves of Aba, Umuahia, Uyo, Ikot-Ekpene and Portharcourt cities.

He revealed in the motion that the road projects were awarded to a number of reputable Local and International Civil Engineering Construction Companies, under a Federal Government Executive Order 007, signed since the year, 2019.

Describing further, the Abia Central mouthpiece affirmed that the roads are alternative routes for the movement of essential goods and passengers across the contiguous states of the South-east, South-south, Western and Northern States of the federation, hence the dire need for the urgent attention the motion seeked.

He however, decried the continued unaccountable delays in completing the all-important road projects, and prayed the federal government of Nigeria to, as a matter of urgency, investigate the unfortunate development, with the view to effecting speedy return to sites, and eventual completion of the projects in order to ameliorate the perennial sufferings of the people and commercial activities that hitherto, took place along those effected areas.

GOVERNOR OTTI APPOINTS SOLE ADMINISTRATOR FOR UMUEHILEGBU MARKET

The Governor of Abia State, Dr. Alex Otti, has approved the appointment of Mr Timothy Iheke Kalu as the Sole Administrator of Umuehilegbu Industrial Market in Osisioma Local Government Area.

The appointment takes immediate effect.

Following the appointment, the Governor has subsequently ordered the reopening of the market, which had been closed to commercial activities, owing to leadership crisis.

Mr. Kalu is to hold office for three (3) months within which period he would work with the various unions in the market to resolve all the issues that led to the closure of the market and a leadership properly instituted to enable the market function seamlessly.

Mr. Peter Obi, LP to challenge presidential election results in 18 states only.

The Presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the February 25 presidential election, Mr Peter Gregory Obi and his party confirmed to the Presidential Election Petition Court (PEPC) on Thursday in Abuja that they would challenge the election results in 18 states only.

They held that they would not dissipate energies in the states where they won convincingly and without any dispute.

However, at the end of proceedings, Obi and his party tendered certified electoral documents obtained from the Independent National Electoral Commission INEC in only six states.

The documents, mainly, Forms EC8A, election results from polling units were admitted as exhibits to be used to establish their alleged riggings and other malpractices during the election.

Presiding Justice of the Court, Haruna Simon Tsammani admitted the documents as exhibits after they were tendered by Chief Emeka Okpoko SAN who represented Obi and the Labour Party.

Meanwhile, INEC, represented by Kemi Pinhero SAN, issued the documents and certified them as genuine but dramatically announced its decision to object to the admission of the documents.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and his Vice, Kashim Shetima, who are 2nd and 3rd respondents and represented by Adebayo Adelodun SAN in the petition challenging their declaration as winners of the election, also hinted to oppose the admissibility of the electoral documents.

Similarly, the All Progressives Congress, APC, represented by Chief Afolabi Fashanu, SAN, argued that it would raise objections against the documents.

Breakdown of the tendered and admitted documents showed that Forms EC8A were tendered in 15 Local Government Areas of Rivers State, 23 in Benue, 18 in Cross River, 23 in Niger State, 20 in Osun and 16 in Ekiti Local Government Areas.

A further hearing in the petition has been shifted to June 2 by the Court at the instance of the two petitioners.

YOU'RE THE ENGINE ROOM OF GOVERNMENT, OTTI TELLS PERMANENT SECRETARIES, DEMANDS TRANSPARENCY

The Governor of Abia State, His Excellency Dr. Alex Otti OFR, has described the Permanent Secretaries in the State's civil service as the engine room of government.

Governor Otti, who was sworn in on Monday May 29, 2023, as the fifth democratically elected Governor of Abia said it was as a result of this understanding that he decided to hold his first meeting as governor with the permanent secretaries.

Consequently, the governor demanded transparency in the conduct of government business from the ministries chief executives, who he directed to take charge until a new set of commissioners are appointed by the new government.

Addressing the senior civil servants on Tuesday at the Michael Okpara Auditorium, Library Road, Umuahia, Governor Otti congratulated them for their continued service to the state but warned them against undermining the new government.

He said: "I want to congratulate all of us for the transitioning to a new administration. Every four years election happen and winners get sworn in. In most places, those who lost become opposition. So, being that we're all winners, I believe that we won't have opposition. But just in case there's opposition, it is also part of governance and democracy.

"We welcome opposition. Constructive engagement is also welcome. Disagreeing with us is part of the business. You can never know it all. If you have an opinion feel free to express it.

"I must tell you that you're the engine room of the government and that's why I thought that the first meeting that I will hold will be with all of you.

"I do know that a lot of you would have different political persuasions and alliances and allegiance, that is not a problem. But what will be the problem is if you begin to undermine the government that you serve and when we notice that, we will not waste time to act because this is a government that must work and anything that stands in the way, we will get it out.

"We will not witch-hunt people and we will not deal with people because of their persuasions, whether it is ethnic, religious and all that. At the end of the day, it is the interest of the state that is paramount."

Dr. Otti, consequently, directed the permanent secretaries to begin to perform the functions of commissioners pending when a new set is appointed by the state governor.

"You will begin to function as commissioners until new commissioners are appointed. I'm sure you understand what I'm saying, that is, that government is a continuum. So ensure you take over and begin to run your different ministries and by the time new commissioners come, you will handover to them.

"I believe some of you were there yesterday when I made my inauguration speech. Everything that I said there, I mean them from A-Z. So things will begin to change.

"This is a familiarisation meeting, where I will listen to you and get to understand what you do; get to understand how you do it and any help or support you require," he declared.

The permanent secretaries, who were led by the Head of Service of the state, Sir Onyii Wama, to the meeting attended by the Deputy Governor of the State, Engr Ikechukwu Emetu, and some team members of the new government, congratulated Dr. Otti on his inauguration and successful assumption of office.

ABIA STATE GOVERNOR DR. ALEX OTTI ORDERS FREEZING OF THE STATE ACCOUNTS, DISSOLUTION OF ALL BOARDS

The Governor of Abia State, His Excellency, Dr. Alex Otti, OFR, has directed the immediate freezing of all accounts of the Abia State Government and those of its agencies domiciled in every bank and financial institution across the State and the Federation.

The Governor in a statement issued by his media office on Monday, May 29, 2023, said with this notice, all banks and other financial institutions in the country are directed to immediately seize from honouring any cheque, document, instrument or directive of any kind not expressly approved by or emanating from him.

Similarly, Governor Otti has directed the immediate dissolution of all boards of the Abia State Government agencies and parastatals and subsequently ordered the chief executives of these organisations to hand over to those next in line to them.

MY DECISION DEVOID OF SENTIMENT AND FAVOURITISM

Let me begin by stating it clearly that I'm not a card carrying member of any political party neither am I a career politician as at today.

I'm speaking today as a concerned patriotic citizen of Abia who has no other State to call my own except Abia and to give direction to those who look up to me to vote wisely.

My decision may not be in tandem with yours as your decision may be based on ur individual interest or relationship with ur choice of candidate while mine is based on the interest of the larger society.

I've taken my time to study all the governorship candidates in Abia and I've come to the conclusion that nothing can stop an idea whose time has come.

This my decision is devoid of sentiment, favouritism, nepotism, and tribalism, it's on this premise that i come to the conclusion of chosing DR. ALEX OTTI as the man who will redeem the lost glory of Abia over the years.

For many who knows me from Adam, I'm not moved by pear pressure or material enticements rather I'm moved by strong ideas and visions so as to stand tall in the hallowed court of posterity. I've lived with this personality all my life and i can not change now.

Ladies and gentlemen, fellow reasonable Youths of Abia, let us join hands with DR. ALEX OTTI to build an Abia that will work for all of us.

Darlington Nwokocha (Darloo) on Wednesday 21. 2022, presented yet, another bumper Bill for an Act for the Establishment of a Federal University of Health Sciences, Umunkpeyi Nvosi, Abia State, which was called up for first reading at the floor of the House Of Representatives, Abuja.

The serial lawmaker widely adjuged as pne of the best Abia has produced since the advent of democracy in 1999, whose Insurance Bill, 2020, was recently passed at the Green Chanbers of the National Assembly, noted with satisfaction that the Bill has high potency to addressing a whole lot of Health Science education gaps obviously existing in Abia state, chiefly at tertiary health science educlevel level, hence, the overwhelming eccence of sponsoring the Bill to bring about the establishment of the first University of Health Sciences of its kind in Abia state, to be sited at the legendary Nvosi High School, Umunkpeyi where ahead of time, the Rt. It is noteworthy that the mouthpiec of the ancestral base of Ngwa land, and Cbairman, House Commiittee on Insurance and Actuarial Matters, fondly called Mr. Project by his beloved constituents, has initiated and completed several projects with so many others at various stages of completion, with specific concentration on Road infrastructure, Healthcare, Commerce, Education, Agric Support, Human Capital development/empowerment, ICT and so many other poverty alleviation programmes.

He hinted that the Bill will go through the usual legislative huddles, assuring that with the cooperation of his colleagues and other relevant bodies pursuant to its expeditous passage for the greater good of Nigeria, Abia state and the supportive people of Isiala Ngwa North and South Federal Constituency in particular, it will achieve the much positive impact expected of a consummate and seasoned legislator like him.

We the good people of Isiala Ngwa North and South support group for Darloo and Ginger resident in Abuja ably led by High Chief Oyoyo Nwachinemere this evening handed over 10,000 copies of posters and 10 units of billboard banners to Okenze Ginger as a means of supporting his political ambition.

We pledged our unalloyed and unwavering support to him as he remains the most credible and tested amongst his opponents.
Ginger Onwusibe is the man who has proved his capacity and competence.

We made him to understand that no amount of petition and diabolic attacks from evil principalities and powers will hinder the grace of God from shining upon him.

We prayed with him, and assured him of our individual prayers, for his victory remains our collective victory.

We also condole with him over the loss of one of his security Men who were killed by his colleague as devil will always be a liar and a failure.
