AI’s honeymoon period may be coming to an end, as the initial wave of hype turns into scepticism and brings new questions about its impact on society.

* A Microsoft engineer has sent letters to US regulators and lawmakers warning that one of Microsoft’s AI tools could generate harmful images.
* AI model evaluation company Patronus AI released research showing how often AI models produce copyrighted content.
* AI-generated disinformation has risen by an average of 130% per month on X over the past year and creates risks for upcoming elections, claims a new report from the British non-profit Center for Countering Digital Hate.

How bad is it?
We’ve been here before. Every new technological wave brings new challenges, creating incentives for new solutions to be built.

While some challenges AI brings are unique, many overlap with issues we have seen with the proliferation of social media and other technologies. The onus will be on the companies that build these AI tools to create guardrails that ensure safe usage.

A few days into 2024, I made some posts on my WhatsApp status, saying that given the different events of 2023, surviving 2024 will need Direction AND Speed (emphasis on AND).
