NLC President Ajaero Voices Concerns Over Fuel Price Surge

Joe Ajaero, President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), has expressed deep concern over the adverse impact of the recent fuel price hike on Nigerians, labeling them as "losers" for adapting to the surge. Speaking at the 21st Daily Trust Dialogue themed “Tinubu’s Economic Reforms: Gainers and Losers,” Ajaero highlighted the struggles faced by the masses, emphasizing the substantial increase in fuel prices from N187/liter to N700/liter.
Ajaero noted the absence of a corresponding increase in salaries and wages, underscoring the resulting hardships faced by citizens. Critically assessing the economic reforms, he pointed out that under former President Muhammadu Buhari, it took eight years for the exchange rate to move from N260/dollar to N700/dollar. However, within six months under President Bola Tinubu, it escalated to N1,350/dollar, leading Ajaero to question who the real losers were in this scenario.
Characterizing the current economic situation as a "public disaster and private gain," Ajaero highlighted the failure of privatized companies in Nigeria, attributing it to what he termed a "prodigal economy." Expressing concern about the country's escalating debt, he questioned the burden of repayment and criticized the enduring narrative of short-term suffering for long-term gains.
President Tinubu's decision to remove the fuel subsidy, as declared following his election, was reiterated in the context of redirecting funds toward essential sectors such as healthcare, transportation, education, housing, and national security. Tinubu emphasized that ending the subsidy aimed to curtail the channeling of substantial funds into the accounts of a select few, focusing on broader societal benefits.
As Ajaero concluded, he urged the implementation of policies to safeguard employment amidst growing company closures and rising unemployment, signaling a call for a comprehensive approach to address the economic challenges facing the nation.
Lagos State Announces Ambitious Plans: To Establish Airline, Construct Airport in Lekki
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has revealed plans for the construction of its own airport in the burgeoning Lekki suburb. The announcement came during the Lagos West Senatorial District Town Hall meeting at the Balmoral Convention Centre, Ikeja, where Governor Sanwo-Olu presented the achievements of his administration to Lagosians.
Highlighting the state's commitment to advancing infrastructure, the governor disclosed that the planned airport would be situated in Lekki, a fast-developing area on the Epe axis of Lagos. This ambitious venture aims to further bolster Lagos State's standing as a major economic hub.
During the presentation, Governor Sanwo-Olu also addressed the delay in the commencement of the much-anticipated 38-kilometer Fourth Mainland Bridge. He attributed the setback to funding challenges but assured residents that efforts were underway to overcome these obstacles.
The Fourth Mainland Bridge is designed to connect Lagos Island across the Lagoon, stretching from Langbasa in Lekki to Baiyeku, Itamaga in Ikorodu. The proposed 2 x 4 lane carriageway includes provisions for a Bus Rapid Transit Lane and future road expansion, with the primary goal of alleviating traffic congestion on existing bridges connecting Lagos Island to the Mainland.

NLC President Joe Ajaero, at the 21st Daily Trust Dialogue in Abuja, cautioned against heeding advice from the World Bank and International Monetary Fund (IMF). He argued that many of Tinubu's reforms mirrored policies of the World Bank and IMF, citing the fuel price hike as an example.
In response, Minister of Information and National Orientation Mohammed Idris defended Tinubu's economic reforms, assuring Nigerians that they would soon experience the benefits. President's Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Mr. Bayo Onanuga, emphasized that the reforms aimed to stabilize the economy and restore the value of the national currency.
Ajaero highlighted the impact of subsidy removal, devaluation of the naira, and the rising debt profile. He criticized the lack of palliatives, businesses closing down, and the alleged failure of privatised companies. Ajaero called for a holistic review of government policies, expressing concern that the country's situation was worsening.
Minister Idris reassured Nigerians that the government was committed to implementing the N35,000 wage award and addressing the short-term effects of subsidy removal. He described the reforms as a mix of immediate measures and long-term solutions, acknowledging temporary pains but asserting that they would not last.
Onanuga defended the removal of the fuel subsidy, stating that it was a necessary step to end subsidy-related corruption. He characterized the currency reforms as a "work in progress" and emphasized ongoing efforts to stabilize the naira.
The Presidency justified the reforms, arguing that subsidised petrol had been exploited by some Nigerians, leading to billions being lost. The government's goal was to address immediate economic shocks and provide a long-term solution.
In response to the criticisms, Ibrahim Abdullahi from the PDP lamented the lack of a clear economic policy to alleviate Nigerians' suffering. Labour Party Spokesman Ifoh criticized the government for not cutting down the cost of governance, accusing them of cronyism and corruption.
As the dialogue unfolded, it became evident that opinions on Tinubunomics and the government's economic reforms are sharply divided, with labor leaders and opposition figures expressing deep concerns about their impact on Nigerians. Simultaneously, in the Nigerian Foreign Exchange Market (NAFEM), the naira experienced a decline, with the indicative exchange rate rising to N900.96 per dollar from N882.24 per dollar on the previous day, marking a depreciation of N18.76 for the national currency.
Data sourced from the Financial Markets Dealers Quotations (FMDQ) revealed the widening gap between the official and parallel market exchange rates. The current gap expanded to N504.04 per dollar, compared to N492.76 per dollar reported on the previous day.
These fluctuations in the exchange rates highlight the challenges facing the Nigerian currency in both official and parallel markets, contributing to concerns about economic stability. The widening gap between the two markets emphasizes the complexity of managing currency valuation in the country.

Two Injured in Collision Between Car and Bus on Agbara-Badagry Expressway, Confirms FRSC

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has verified that two individuals sustained injuries in a road crash involving a car and a commercial bus on the Agbara-Badagry expressway. Mr. William Manga, the FRSC Commander for Badagry Unit, confirmed the incident, stating that it occurred around 9:25 p.m. on Tuesday.
The collision, involving a Toyota Camry car with registration number MUS 648 CY and a Suzuki commercial bus with registration number FKJ 687 YD, was attributed to speeding and impatience on the part of both drivers. Mr. Manga reported that FRSC personnel arrived at the accident scene by 9:30 p.m. and found three persons involved, with two sustaining serious injuries.
One injured person was taken to a hospital by relatives, while the other victim was rushed to the General Hospital, Badagry, for treatment. The crashed vehicles were subsequently towed to the FRSC command's office.
Among the items recovered from the accident scene were a laptop, generator, and pumping machine, all handed over to the duty room officials at the command. Manga urged motorists using the Agbara-Badagry expressway to be mindful of the single lane in use and emphasized the importance of adhering to speed limits, as well as conducting routine vehicle checks for prompt fault detection and replacement.

Farouk Akintunde, the Senior Special Adviser to the state Governor on Environment, issued the closure order during an enforcement tour conducted by the Agency. The company was found guilty of operating without adherence to environmental regulations, posing a potential threat to the well-being of the community residents. Akintunde urged companies to comply with the state's environmental laws to ensure the safety of lives and businesses.
Prompted by complaints from the community residents regarding the emission of hazardous carbon-monoxide by the company, the Agency swiftly took action to investigate and subsequently shut down the operation.
Akintunde emphasized the importance of prioritizing the safety of the host community and warned against practices that could jeopardize people's health or affect local businesses. He stated, “Lives of your host community should be a major priority to you; desist from practices that can be injurious to people’s health and or affect businesses, as the present administration will not take it easy with any environmental law defaulter.”

Police Apprehend Three Alleged Indian H**p Sellers in Ogun State
In a recent operation, the Ogun State Police Command has successfully arrested three individuals for their alleged involvement in selling Indian h**p in the Ifo Local Government Area.
The Police Public Relations Officer, Omolola Odutola, confirmed the arrests, revealing that the anti-robbery squad made the apprehension during a routine patrol last Saturday. The suspects, including Olashile Mustapha, Babatunde Ahmed, and Gbenga Adekanbi, attempted to escape upon sighting the police patrol but were pursued and apprehended.
Prior to their arrest, the police revealed that the trio had ties to two notorious gang members, Oloyo and Surulere, known for terrorizing the local community. Upon frisking the suspects, a considerable amount of substance suspected to be Indian h**p was discovered. The police indicated that a preliminary investigation would be conducted, and the suspects would be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Abeokuta for further processing.
Omolola Odutola confirmed the imminent prosecution of the three suspects once the investigation is concluded, emphasizing that the substance found on them is suspected to be Indian h**p.
Ogun Lawmaker Details Reasons Behind Speaker Oluomo's Removal

Damilola Soneye, an All Progressives Congress (APC) lawmaker in the Ogun Assembly representing Obafemi Owode State Constituency, has provided insights into the removal of the former speaker, Kunle Oluomo, citing alleged gross misconduct as the primary reason.
Soneye, in explaining the decision, emphasized that the role of the speaker should be one of equality among colleagues. However, he noted that Oluomo's conduct suggested a disregard for this principle, displaying traits of high-handedness, lack of focus, transparency, arrogance, poor leadership style, financial misappropriation, and inciting members against each other.
Oluomo, who was removed by 18 lawmakers during plenary, faced the allegations in a 26-member Assembly. The circumstances regarding the attendance of Oluomo's supporters during the removal remain unclear, as 18 lawmakers signed the notice.
The plenary session, presided over by Deputy Speaker Mrs. Bolanle Ajayi (APC-Yewa South), saw Oludaisi Elemide elected to replace Oluomo, representing Ifo 1 State Constituency.
Adegoke Adeyanju (APC-Yewa North 1) moved the motion for the speaker's removal, seconded by Ademola Adeniran (APC-Sagamu11). Following his election, Elemide assured the citizens of a positive leadership change, emphasizing their commitment to supporting Governor Dapo Abiodun, stating that the governor was not involved in the removal process.

According to a resident, the body was found on Monday, January 22, 2024, due to the overwhelming odor that has engulfed the entire area.
The putrid smell emanating from the decomposed body has made the environment unbearable for residents, prompting them to call on the Sagamu local government and other concerned authorities for immediate assistance. The residents hope that the removal of the body will restore a sense of safety and tranquility to their community.
As of now, the identity of the deceased remains unknown. The residents, while awaiting official confirmation, are hopeful that the authorities will respond promptly to their plea and alleviate the distress caused by the situation. They emphasize the urgency of the situation and the need for immediate action to restore peace and normalcy to the Akin Odubiyi streets and its surrounding areas.

Test drives have already been conducted in Abeokuta to ensure the adaptability of electric bikes on rough terrain, while a comprehensive sensitization campaign has engaged key stakeholders in the transport sector. With the goal of deploying 250 swap stations across the state within six months, Ogun State is paving the way for a greener and more efficient future.
The electric bikes, known as Spiro commando bikes, offer an impressive range of 70-80 kilometers per battery swap. This transition is expected to result in a significant 30-40% reduction in operational expenses compared to traditional ICE bikes. Not only are electric bikes environmentally friendly, but they also produce minimal noise pollution, making them a preferred choice for communities.

In a bid to strengthen the intelligence department of the Nigerian Police Force, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Olukayode Adeolu Egbetokun,has directed the immediate posting of Assistant Commissioners of Police (ACPs) to head the Intelligence Department at both Zonal and State Commands across the country.
This move is part of the IGP's vision to improve the effectiveness of the intelligence department and combat the rising crime rate in Nigeria.
The IGP's decision comes after reactivating the Presidential approval to upgrade the Force Intelligence Bureau to a Department, appointing DIG Habu Sanni as the head. The newly appointed ACPs have been tasked with deploying intelligence-based assets to tackle crimes and criminality in their respective areas of responsibility.

Governor Ademola Adeleke Takes Bold Steps to Revitalize Mining Sector in Osun State

Governor Ademola Adeleke has taken decisive actions to ensure maximum economic benefits for the state and its people, while also prioritizing environmental safety.
During a joint stakeholders' business meeting with Segilola Resources Operating Limited, led by CEO Segun Lawson, held at the Governor's office, several key agreements were reached.
Firstly, it was established that the Osun State Government holds shares in Segilola Resources Operating Limited, as well as in the parent company traded publicly in Canada and the UK. This reinforces the state's commitment to the mining sector. Additionally, Hon. Kazeem Akinleye, the Chief of Staff, will represent the Osun State Government on the board of Segilola Resources Operating Limited, ensuring active participation in decision-making processes.
Furthermore, Segilola Resources Operating Limited will provide the state government with detailed information regarding royalties paid to the Federal government. This will enable the state to claim its rightful 13% derivatives, which will greatly benefit the people of Osun State. In compliance with the 2007 mining act, the state government will also establish the MIREMCO committee, comprising relevant representatives, to ensure effective governance and oversight.
To enhance synergy on environmental management and representation along the mining value chain, quarterly meetings will be held between the Office of Natural and Mineral Resources and the state government. This collaborative approach will contribute to sustainable development and responsible mining practices in Osun State.
