WHY THE OBOLO (ANDONI) PEOPLE CALL GOD "AWAJI"

-β€”By Paul Alfred

"AWAJI" is the Obolo name for God. The name was formed by joining two different words: "AWA" and "EJI".

The "awa" is arguably the most sacred place in Andoni religious philosophy. It is the sanctuary or innermost part of the shrine of a deity, masquerade or spiritual order. The "awa" is the source or essence of power; a stronghold, fortress, hiding place.

In Obolo tradition, it is only persons that have been fully initiated into a particular spiritual order that can enter its "awa". This is because the "awa" is the very source of life and secrets of the spiritual order it serves. Popular "Awa" in Andoni include "Awa York Obolo", "Awa Nwantam" and "Awa Ekirikamba".

"EJI" in Andoni is a collective pronoun which simply means "we", "us" or more generally, Obolo people. That is "eji ebi Obolo".

Consequently, in referring to God as "Awa-Eji", the Obolo people recognize God as the ultimate "Awa". Unlike other "awa" that are exclusive to their respective spiritual orders, God is the "Awa-Eji"; the "Awa" of all of us (Eji).

Recalling the meaning of "awa", what this implies is that for us (eji ebi Obolo), God is the source, secret and essence of our existence. Like the "awa", God is our defence, fortress, hiding place and power behind our life.

I need to emphasize that "awa Nwantam" for instance is open only to persons fully initiated into the Nwantam masquerade order. But "Awa Eji" is the "Awa" of all of us (eji). It is the only "awa" that is open to and accessible by all of us (eji). "Awa Eji", our own collective "Awa" without discrimination. This means that we all have equal privilege to access God because God is AWA-EJI.

Port Harcourt is a beautiful, clean, and peaceful city located in Ikwerre Land, Rivers State, Nigeria. It is a city that is known for its stunning landscapes, friendly people, and rich cultural heritage. Despite its many challenges, Port Harcourt remains one of the most vibrant and dynamic cities in Nigeria.

Unfortunately, there are some people who have never seen a clean city in their state, let alone a beautiful one like Port Harcourt. These individuals often leave their States, only to arrive in Port Harcourt and years later start saying off comments about Rivers people.

They show disrespect towards the Rivers people and make derogatory comments about the city, despite the fact that their own state is nothing like Port Harcourt. The question is, why do they do this?

Perhaps it is due to a lack of exposure and understanding of what makes a city beautiful and vibrant. Or maybe it is simply a case of jealousy and envy. Whatever the reason, it is important to remember that Port Harcourt is a city that deserves to be celebrated and respected.

Despite its many challenges, Port Harcourt remains a city that is rich in culture, history, and natural beauty. The city has a lot to offer, from its stunning landscapes and vibrant culture to its welcoming people and vibrant nightlife.

In conclusion, Port Harcourt is a beautiful, clean, and peaceful city that is deserving of respect and admiration. The city is a testament to the resilience and strength of the Ikwerre people and Rivers State at large, and it is a place that should be celebrated and cherished by all Nigerians. So let us all work together to promote the beauty and vibrancy of Port Harcourt and to create a brighter future for the city and its people.
