South African photographer Mark Dumbleton took this picture of a female lion after she lost one of her teeth in a violent fight with a predator. All this in order to protect her young, who survived in the end while she was hugging him with blood filling her face.

Little cub did not seem to care about the extent of his mother’s suffering, but he will soon learn the extent of the sacrifice she made for him after he grows up and becomes responsible for protecting the herd.
