GOV FUBARA EXPRESSES GRIEF, TO SUPPORT BEREAVED FAMILIES OF EAST-WEST ROAD FIRE DISASTER

Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara has expressed grief over the fire disaster on the East-West road that caused loss of lives and destroyed several vehicles on Friday night.

Governor Fubara after inspection of the carnage that occured at Aleto, Eleme area near Indorama Petrochemicals Limited, noted that when he got information about the fire incident on Friday night he quickly dispatched the security agencies to step in, describing the situation as unfortunate and commiserated with those that lost their loved ones and vehicles as a result of the inferno.

"In fact, I got the information through the MD of Indorama and I immediately alerted the security agencies to make sure that they step in. And from what we are seeing this morning, it wasn't a pleasant situation."

"From what I am seeing, we recorded a huge number of vehicles destroyed and souls lost. But I have already asked the security agencies to give us a full brief so that we can assess the situation fully and see what we can do to support the families that are bereaved and how to cushion the effects of the losses which we believe is no fault of a good number of them."

Gov. Fubara who was accompanied on the visit by the Commissioner for Energy, Hon. Uche Nwafor urged commuters on the East-West road to be cautious as the situation of the road calls for carefulness, adding that the disaster would have been avoidable if motorists also behaved properly.

The disaster which was caused by a PMS ladden tanker that caught fire witnessed loss of lives and several vehicles burnt at about 7:30pm.

BREAKING: Abuja American school refunds $760,910 school fees paid by former Governor Yahaya Bello in two tranches to EFCC, per The Nation

The American International School of Abuja has paid $760,910.84 to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) from the $845,852 school fees allegedly deposited by former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello in respect of five of his children in the school.

The fees were to cover a period of 14 years (2021–2035), according to documents filed in court by the EFCC to support its case against the ex-governor.

“The American school refunded the school fees in two tranches. Initially, it returned $720,000 to the EFCC and later $40,910,” a top source in EFCC told The Nation.

Continuing, the source said: “Following mutual agreement with the EFCC, the school decided to retain some fees (I think $84,942) for its services.

When contacted for official reaction, the Head of Media and Publicity of EFCC, Mr. Dele Oyewale, said: “The school has refunded $760,910 to this commission.”

Responding to a question, the top source confirmed that “the school officially sent a letter of offer to refund to the Lagos Zonal Commander of the EFCC before effecting the payment.”

The letter said in part: “Please forward to us an official written request, with the authentic banking details of the EFCC, for the refund of the above-mentioned funds as previously indicated as part of your investigation into the alleged money laundering activities by the Bello Bello family.

“Since the 7th September 2021 to date, $845,852.84 in tuition and other fees have been deposited into our bank account.

“We have calculated the net amount to be transferred and refunded to the state after deducting the educational services rendered as $760,910.84.

“No further additional fees are expected in respect of tuition as the students’ fees have now been settled until they graduate from AISA.”

A State High Court in Port Harcourt has discharged and acquitted Eze Ekpeye Logbo, Kelvin Anugwo, and 42 others standing trial for the death of a Divisional Police Officer of Ahoada-East, late SP Bako Amgbashim.

The accused persons were standing trial on a four-count charge of cultism, armed robbery, murder, and conspiracy to commit murder.

Recall that over fifty persons are standing trial after SP Bako Angbashim was killed by late David Gift popularly known as 2Baba and his gang members in September 2023.

When the matter came up in court today, the Director of Public Prosecution C.F. Amadi told the court that no case was established against the accused persons.

The trial judge Justice S.H. Aprioku, relying on the advice of the Directorate of Public Prosecution, discharged and acquitted the accused persons.

Rivers State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Prof. Zacchaeus Adangor has resigned.

His resignation came after being redeployed to the Ministry of Special Duties (Governor's Office) in a cabinet reshuffle by Governor Fubara.

Adangor is a strong ally of Wike. In his resignation letter, he said he no longer want to serve in the administration of Governor Siminalayi Fubara.

He also accused the Governor of interfering with the performance of his duties as Attorney General of the state.

JUSTICE NYESOM WIKE PROMOTED TO COURT OF APPEAL

The Rivers State Family Court, Justice Eberechi Nyesom Wike is one of the 22 judges selected and appointed to the Appeal Court of Nigeria.

It was a rigorous selection process that screened 89 nominees to fill available positions.

Having scaled through that huddles, the 22 successful judges have now been confirmed promoted.

Chief Justice of Nigeria, Olukayode Ariwoola approved the promotion on April 2, 2024, and has been forwarded to President Tinubu for appointment.

Justice Eberechi Nyesom Wike is the wife of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike.

Other newly appointed justices on the list indicated that Justices Polycarp Tema Kwahar, Ruqayat Ayoola, Eneche Eleojo, Asmara Akanbi Yusuf, Abdullahi Muhammad Liman, and Abdu Dogo were appointed from the North-Central region.

From the North-East region, there is only Justice Fadahu Umaru, from Borno State.

Justices Ishaq Mohammed Sani, Zainab Bage Abubakar, and Abdulaziz M. Ankara were appointed from the North-West region

From the South-East region were Justices Nnamdi Okwy Dimga Victoria, Toochukwu Nwoye, Henry Aja-Onu Njoku, Donatus Uwaezuoke Okorowo, and Ngozika N Okaisabor.

The South-South region had Justices Ntong Festus Ntong, Nehizena Idemudia Afolabi, and Eberechi Suzette Wike recommended for promotion.

From the South-West region were Justices Lateef Babajide Lawal-Akapo, Abiodun Azeem Akinyemi, Oyewumi Oyejoju Oyebiola, and Bayo Ademola Taiwo.

500 level ABSU student arrested for killing a rival cult member begs for pardon

Emmanuel Victor, who is a 500 level Optometry student of Abia State University, has admitted that he was the one in the viral video where another final year student Emmanuel Uche, was killed in March, 2024.

The suspect said he is a Vikings cult member and he committed the crime because Uche was an Aiye cult member.

He pleaded for a second chance, stating that this was his first time killing somebody.

He said he want a second chance,it's only God that forgive but it's our duty to send him to God.

PDP Condemns Arrest of Governor Fubara Loyalists in Abuja...... Calls for Their Immediate Release.

The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP has condemned the arrest and detention of some loyalists of the Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminialayi Fubara in Abuja on Thursday 18 April 2024, urging the Inspector General of Police to order their release without further delay.

It would be recalled that supporters of Governor Siminialayi Fubara, including Hon. Goodboy Sokari Goodboy, the Lawmaker representing Ahoada East Constituency in the State House of Assembly and Mr Ezebunwo Ichemati were arrested by the Nigeria Police, under the supervision of the Ikwerre local government Council Chairman, Samuel Nwanosike.

Publicity Secretary of the Party, Sydney Tambari Gbara said in reaction to the incident that the arrest was part of plans by enemies of the State to intimidate Fubara's loyalists to provoke crises that could spill over to Rivers State despite efforts by Sir Siminalayi Fubara to maintain peace in the State.

"The arrest at the Wadata House where party men of timber and calibre from the PDP were meeting to forge unity in the rank and file of the party is another sad and embarrassing experience of unending acts of harassment suffered by PDP members loyal to Governor Fubara.
It was unimaginable that associates and supporters of Governors and leaders from other states were cheering their leaders as they arrived at the Wadata House unhindered, those from Rivers who came to identify with Governor Fubara were being harassed, intimidated, arrested and detained by the Police without provocation. We have time without number advise the police to remain neutral and not allow themselves to be used by political jobbers to settle political scores, especially those concerning Rivers State.

The PDP also called on Rivers people, particularly supporters of Governor Fubara to remain strong and unwavering in their commitment to the success of his administration.

Two loyalists of the Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, including the lawmaker representing the Ahoada West Constituency of the state House of Assembly, Hon Sokari Goodboy Sokari; have been arrested at the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

Also arrested by the police was a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party in the state, Ezebunwo Ichemati.

According to eye witness Ugochukwu Oputa, the police were led by Chairman of Ikwerre LGA in Rivers State, Nwanosike Samuel

"Were at Kilimanjaro Eatery where we went to eat. After we were done eating and about to leave, We saw Samuel Nwanosike and some armed men at the other end of the mall. Already Ezebunwo Ichemati had left to use the rest room that was at that same corner when Ishi Samuel Nwanosike pointed at Ichemati and asked the armed men to pick him up and also pick up Hon. Goodboy Sokari who is also was also in the mall.

"After the armed men failed to whisk us from the mall due to the intervention of the mall security and some Police officers present, we were asked to leave the mall premises.

"On getting in front of Wadata were we regrouped as a team, these men regrouped in front with Samuel Nwasosike, swiftly and forcely pushed Ichemati and Hon. Sokari Goodboy into their van while threatening to shoot them and drove off." he said

Day-old baby boy abandoned in a polythene bag, rescued

It was social worker who heard the sound of a crying baby emanating from a polythene bag along the Alhaji Masha Road, Surulere, Lagos State.

The baby boy was quickly rushed to the Randle General Hospital for quick medical intervention.

Channels Television’s reporter, Joshua Rogers, who was kidnapped near his residence at Rumuosi in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State, on Thursday, has regained his freedom.

He was said to have been released around 10pm on Friday.

One of his colleagues with Channels TV in Port Harcourt, Charles Oporum, confirmed his release on Friday.

“Yes, he has been released. He was released about an hour ago, and he has reunited with his family,” Oporum said.

The management of the television station, in a short statement, also confirmed the development.

The statement read, “Channels Television reporter, Joshua Rogers, who was abducted last night in Port Harcourt, Rivers State has been freed.

“We thank our viewers and all those who expressed concern over the unfortunate incident.”

Rogers is the Government House, Port Harcourt correspondent for Channels TV.

A journalist working with Channels Television, Joshua Nte Rogers is being held captive.

He was abducted last night as he was about to drive into his compound in Port Harcourt after work.

His family is pleading with members of the public to help them with any valuable information they may have at their disposal.

To the abductors, the family is pleading that they please have pity on them, especially on their mother.

They also say that they are yet to overcome the incident of their sister, Dorcas Akep iteigha Zikenah, who has been declared missing since 2014, ten years ago.

The political developments in Rivers State have taken a new twist with the endorsement of Governor Siminalayi Fubara as the political leader of the state by former Governor Peter Odili.

Dr Odili gave the endorsement today at the commissioning of a Primary Healthcare Centre donated by his foundation in his hometown in Ndoni, Ogba-Egbema-Ndoni Local Government Area.

He praised Governor Fubara for defending the interests of the people and encouraged the governor to maintain this alignment with the President and his policies to attract federal government attention and support to the state. He also emphasised the strategic importance of Rivers State, warning that if the state sneezes, the entire nation catches cold.
