When you hear the Igbo call someone with excess money "onye nwere ego igwe", what comes to your kind? These were Igbo currencies before the foreigners introduced their own paper money to us. Remember, our ancestors smithed irons and metals before the first European touched here.

Contrary to what they tried to force us believe, we had our civilization before they came. We produced everything we used then. When they came, we only exchanged things. They gave us their products, we exchanged them with ours.

Remember, oyibo didn't introduce clothing to us. There were local fabrics and rubber trees around us. Of course, people used to be naked before, but there was certain age one had to cover with locally made fabrics. That being said, innovation and sharing of ideas happened.

Let me not digress from the import of this article...

What you see here are called "okpogho". The whiteman tagged it as "bracelet manilla"

Another Igbo word for it is "ego igwe" (iron-money)

Iron is smithened to form it. It's of different types. Each has currency discrepancy.

What do I mean? They measure the high currency base on different factors. It could be the weight, the design. The more weightier it's, the more valuable.

When someone is rich today people will say: "o nwe ego igwe". It is because of this currency. Or you will hear "o nwere okpogho/,okpogo" (he's wealthy
