NIGERIA DROPS IN LATEST CORRUPTION RANKING!!!...

Again, Nigeria drops in latest corruption ranking..

The ranking may be an indicator that corruption in the country has gotten worse over the years.:
OWOTV @ January 29, 2022 3 min read

Nigeria has dropped five places in the 2021 Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) ranking released on Tuesday by Transparency International (TI).

The country, scoring 24 out of 100 points, ranked 154 out of 180 countries surveyed, falling back five places from the rank of 149 in 2020 placing as the second most corrupt country in West Africa.

The report was revealed on TI’s official Twitter handle, on Tuesday.

It is Nigeria’s second consecutive year of a downward spiral on the TI’s CPI ranking, the country’s score having dropped from 26 in 2019 to 25 in the 2020 assessment, and further to 24 in the latest 2021 record.

The CPI is TI’s tool for measuring the levels of corruption in the systems of various countries around the world. The maximum points a country can score is 100 points, and the least is zero. Zero signifies the worst performing countries and 100, the best-ranked.

The ranking may be an indicator that corruption in the country has gotten worse over the years.

Pushback
However, the Nigerian authorities, on the other hand, have always criticised any unfavourable TI’s reports that point to worsening corruption in the country.

It claimed last year, in reaction to the 2021 assessment, that TI was unaware of President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration’s achievements in the battle against corruption.

The Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, had stated that the (TI-CPI) does not reflect “the great strides by the country in its fight against corruption.”

The minister also questioned the source of the data used for the TI ranking.

He said: “For instance, following the release of the 2019 TI-Corruption Perception Index, the government initiated reforms to improve on Nigeria’s Ease of Doing Business indices. This is because we found that up to 40 per cent of the country’s corruption perception survey indices relate to business processes and general public service delivery processes.

“Government’s swift action has led to major reforms in the processes at our ports and business process points.”

CSOs frown
The Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC), the national chapter of Transparency International (TI), said the CPI result does not include the assessment of Nigeria’s anti-graft agencies
who are making commendable efforts in reducing (in the fight against) corruption in Nigeria.

This, the group said, was despite the political interference they face. Rather, the CPI goes beyond the anti-graft agencies.

Auwal Rafsanjani, TI’s country representative, said this in a statement issued on Tuesday, further blaming the fall on the government.

The CPI result, he said, comes at a time when the country is grappling with rising nationwide insecurity, high unemployment, and damning revelations about public finance management.

The score, according to the organisation, does not reflect specific instances of corruption in the country, but rather the perception of corruption.

CISLAC also said the failure of the anti-graft agencies to investigate high-profile corruption cases and prevent Illicit Financial Flows (IFFs) by anti-corruption authorities was one of the numerous deficiencies noted by the organization as reasons for the group’s drop in the CPI-TI ranking.

“While we commend the arrest of cybercriminals and call on the anti-graft agencies to do more, there is a need
to investigate high profile political cases including those of individuals who have
switched political affiliations.

“A case in point is the Pandora Papers revelations which is one of the biggest ever corruption leaks led by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ) and over 600 journalists from 117 countries, including Journalists from Nigeria’s Premium Times.

“A close look at the Pandora Papers published in 2021 reveals that Nigeria tops the African continent when looking at the number of those exposed. Following the pattern of two previous leaks (i.e., the Paradise Papers and Panama Papers, which were released in 2016 and 2017, respectively), the Pandora Papers exposes systems and secrecy jurisdictions that enable and abate crime, corruption, and illicit dealings by politicians, billionaires, influential individuals, and their enablers globally.

“Since its release on October 3, 2021, Nigerians are yet to see any action or get answers from anti-graft agencies whose work has been made easier by the diligent reporters from Premium Times which highlighted stolen or suspiciously acquired assets to be investigated. With the elections fast approaching, and the response.”......

NEWSIslamic group warns Turkey President, Erdogan as he arrives Nigeria today
October 18, 2021

The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), has issued a stern warning to Turkish president, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, asking him to stop prosecuting opposition leader back home in Turkey.

MURIC berated the president ahead of his arrival in Nigeria today, Monday, on a state visit.

The Muslim rights group, in a statement signed by its director, Prof. Ishaq Akintola, accused Erdogan of arbitrary arrest, torture, political killings, long imprisonment of opposition figures and critics, particularly members of the Hizmet Movement.

The President is expected to sign some business deals with the Nigerian government led by President Muhammadu Buhari.

And MURIC claimed that Erdogan’s visit leaves a sour taste in the mouth because of his alleged undemocratic and tyrannical practices back home in Turkey.

“He cooked up a phantom coup on 15th July, 2016 to justify sweeping changes to the constitution and he arrogated extensive powers to himself as president,” MURIC said.

“What followed was arbitrary arrest, torture, political killings, long imprisonment of opposition figures and critics, particularly members of the Hizmet Movement.

“Travelling documents of key members of Hizmet were seized, and their properties were confiscated. They were thrown in jail in their thousands without fair trial. Members of the group who were outside Turkey were disallowed from returning.

“Though Hizmet is not a political movement that could threaten his position, yet like all dictators and tyrants, Erdogan was envious of the group because the latter had become extremely popular.

“Erdogan uses its diplomats in Nigeria to haunt Turkish citizens and members of the Hizmet Movement who are rendering humanitarian services in the country. They were declared persona non grata in Turkey and disallowed to enter their country of origin. Their travelling documents were seized, thereby denying them right of return.

“Erdogan also uses his diplomats in Nigeria to label members of the Hizmet as terrorists. This is a very wicked attempt to push Nigerian security agencies to arrest, intimidate and unduely punish innocent refugees and asylum seekers.

“Members of their families whom they left behind in Turkey are also not allowed to travel out to unite with their loved ones in Nigeria. Thus we find Recep the tyrant masquerading as a liberal, Tayyip the dictator disguising as a democrat and Erdogan the bully pretending to be a hero. Afraid of his own shadow, Erdogan has forcefully separated husbands from their wives and children from their parents.

“MURIC affirms clearly, unequivocally and categorically that members of Hizmet are peace-loving people who are committed to the service of Nigerians and other people of the world. This they do by establishing primary and secondary schools of international standard as well as universities and hospitals. They also assist in building boreholes in Nigeria’s public schools and villages.

“Hizmet is, therefore, a mere network of humanitarian workers committed to the upliftment of mankind from ignorance to knowledge and from the abyss of poverty to the pinnacle of economic emancipation. This is service to humanity per excellence. How can anyone in his right senses accuse such a movement of being a terrorist group?

“MURIC rejects the double standard and hypocritical pretence of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. We charge him to leave members of Hizmet who are resident in Nigeria alone. We call on Erdogan to fling open the doors of Turkish prisons and torture chambers if he wants to be embraced by the international community.

“The whole world is now fully aware that Erdogan is an enemy of democracy. Allah-given fundamental human rights, including freedom of speech, freedom of movement, freedom of association and the rule of law are alien to Erdogan’s political philosophy. The whole of Turkey has become a huge prison camp in the grips of a vicious ruler.

“We appeal to the world community to intervene in the case of prisoners of conscience in Turkey. Thousands are languishing in jail without trial. Too many people are being tortured by Erdogan’s agents. Hundreds of Turkey citizens who have loved ones outside the country should be allowed to travel out. We call on Amnesty International and all other civil society groups around the world to speak out against Erdogan’s inhumanity to his perceived enemies.

“We urge President Muhammadu Buhari to be wary of the antics of the Turkish president as they both engage in business deals for their two countries. Erdogan is the modern fox of the Balkans, the Otto Von Bismarck of the Mediterranean and the Jekyll and Hyde of the Black Sea. Erdogan is not to be trusted. There is no scintilla of humanity in him.”

Why I slept with my daughter —Suspect
Tribune

Two days ago,

A 45-year-old man, OlaOluwa Jimoh, who was arrested in September for allegedly having s*xual relations with his biological daughter to the extent of impregnating her has opened up on the in**stuous act.

Jimoh was arrested by detectives from the Ogun State police command for impregnating his 19-year-old daughter.

The daughter (name withheld), who is also the suspect’s first child, had told the police that the s*xual relations between her and her father started in June, with the man threatening to kill her if she ever told anyone.

According to her, she had to go to the police to lodge a complaint after she got pregnant in spite of her father’s threat.

She told the police of how she was staying with her mother who got separated from her father a long time ago until two years ago after her father told her to come and stay with him.

Upon interrogation by the police, the randy man admitted to having s*xual relations with his daughter.

In an interview with Saturday Tribune, Jimoh spoke further, claiming that the unlawful relationship started on the insistence of his daughter.

He said: “I am a farmer from Ode Remo. The girl is my first child and the only one from her mother. I have children from two other women but my current wife does not have a living child; all the children she has had for me all died.

“When my daughter came to live with me, we had fun (s*x). She was the one calling herself my wife. She was even fighting with the last wife over me. She said she was going to be daddy’s wife.

“I was not the one who deflowered her. She even told me that she delivered a baby for someone but the baby died. I was not the one who told her to come and stay with me. She came with her lover. The lover told me that he wanted to take her with him, asking if whether I would want that or have her stay with me to learn a vocation. I responded that I would want her to learn a vocation.

“She was left with me and I made her start learning hairdressing. During this period, she was having affairs with different men. She was always telling people that she was her father’s wife. This made people to be asking why she should be claiming to be her father’s wife.

“Whenever my last wife came around from her mother’s house where she went to stay for a while, my daughter would quarrel with her, telling me not to marry her again. I told her that I couldn’t leave my wife, asking her who would be my companion after she (the daughter) left for her husband’s house.

“She told me she was not initially staying with her mother, as she was just moving around Lagos State. I don’t know why I started sleeping with her. Maybe she used charms on me. We copulated three times. I was not even ej*******ng in her. I used to release my semen in a cloth to prevent pregnancy.”

Asked how his daughter became pregnant, he said: “She used to go to other men. I believe I am not the one who impregnated her. She was the one who usually called me for s*x, and I made a mistake by not refusing her advances. She also told me that there were two men she was seeing, one in Ishara Remo and the other in Ibadan, Oyo State.”

On what would happen with his daughter’s pregnancy which she claimed belonged to him, the suspect said the pregnancy should be aborted because it had brought about disgrace and mockery for both of them.

Jimoh disclosed that the victim’s mother had not been seen since the news of the in**st broke out. Saturday Tribune also learnt the pregnant daughter has run away, her whereabouts currently unknown, after she came under heavy criticism from the family for dragging the family name in the mud by exposing such a shameful thing to the world and attempting to send her father to prison.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Oyeyemi, said the case file of the suspect had been forwarded to the legal department of the command pending his arraignment.

Nigerian farmers have decried water scarcity that has hit rice, beans and millet farms across the North.

In an interview, Idris Musa Sarkin Noman Abakwa, Kaduna, said he was afraid that local farmers might lose their crops due to lack of rainfall in the past three weeks.

As the rainy season stopped, many local farmers feared crops yet to mature might be lost without adequate water, Mr Abakwa.

According to him, floods and other ecological challenges have affected this year’s bumper harvest, causing scarcity of crops and food items in the markets.

A two-week survey conducted by a team of volunteer environmental journalists from various media outlets across the 19 northern states showed how many local farmers farming along the Riverbanks were forced to use irrigation to save their crops.

Mr Abakwa explained that most of the crops on his farmland had started drying up gradually, which was a sign of a huge loss for him.

According to him, beans, rice, millet, and sorghum farmers battle to salvage their crops. Some of them were forced to hire generators to pump water from waterways or rivers to their farms.

He further explained that most farmers across the North practised subsistence farming, few practised mechanised farming.

Mr Abakwa added that many farmers did not start planting their crops on time due to the nature of this year’s rainy season.

He mentioned the need to educate more farmers on averting the damage to their crops and other harvests.

The farmer called on state and federal governments to embark on sensitisation of farmers on the latest farming techniques to join the world in the fight against hunger and inadequate food in the market.

Piman Hoffman, the director, African climate reporters, cited climate change as posing numerous threats to animal farming operations.

According to him, climate change can disrupt food availability, reduce access to food, and affect food quality.

He also called on governments to redouble their efforts towards sensitising rural farmers about climate change and adapting to new farming systems.

Poly lecturers urge sacking of council chairman for alleged misconduct

On 08 October 2019;
Lecturers at the Ondo State-owned Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo (RUGIPO), under the auspices of the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnic (ASUP), have demanded urgent removal of the Chairman of Governing Council, Mr. Banji Alabi, to save the institution from total collapse.

They also accused the top management of the institution for alleged misconduct, malfeasance and gross abuse of office, urging the state governor and Visitor of the institution to investigate the allegations and sack the chairman of the council.

Chairman of the union, Mr. Oluwadare Ijawoye, flanked by other executive members of the union, while addressing journalists at NUJ Press Centre, Akure, at the weekend, said the school was already on life-support.

Ijawoye accused the management of the institution of victimising ASUP executives by illegally suspending them for unfounded allegations while only a few cronies of Alabi enjoy promotion as and when due.

“Government should do all necessary and lawful things that will not allow the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) carry out its threat of de-accrediting all academic programmes of RUGIPO,” he said.

The lecturers urged that “government should carry out an investigation into how over N68 million of public fund was recently approved by RUGlPO’s leadership (contrary to the extant law of Ondo State) and used for the alleged purchase of about five cars, most of which are to be second-hand cars.”

The ASUP chairman noted that if the state government refuses to act fast on the situation at the institution, RUGIPO might be brought to an irredeemable poor condition.

Meanwhile, the Director of Public Relations and Protocol of the Polytechnic, Mr. Samuel Ojo, has dismissed the allegation as unfounded, adding that everything follows the due process at the school.

Ojo also noted that there was no warning from the NBTE as claimed by the ASUP leaders to de-accredit all its programmes.

The director said the chairman and secretary of ASUP, RUGIPO, had been suspended for alleged gross misconducts, insisting that contracts and spending in the institution always followed the due process and extant rules....

Some of the vehicles vandalised at the venue of the Peoples Democratic Party's state congress in Ibadan.

At least 50 vehicles parked around the Jogor Centre, Ibadan, where the Mrs Mulikat Adeola-Akande-led faction of the Peoples Democratic Party held its state congress on Saturday were vandalised by hoodlums.

The hoodlums, in their scores, armed with sticks and machetes, were, however, prevented by security agents from entering the venue of the congress.

It was gathered that the hoodlums had earlier attacked the venue of the parallel congress held at an event centre around the Oke-Ado area of Ibadan.

Sources said the first attack happened at about 2am.

Two aggrieved PDP leaders in the state, Alhaji Nureni Akanbi and Alhaji Bisi Olopoeyan, confirmed the attack to our correspondent.

Akanbi said, “They (hoodlums) first came at around 2am and destroyed some vehicles parked at the venue. They came again as we were holding the congress and injured some people.”

Olopoeyan also said, “One of them was arrested and he has been handed over to operatives of the Department of State Services.”

However, our correspondent could not independently verify the claim as none of the officials of the secret police was ready to either confirm or deny the assertion.

It was further gathered that the faction loyal to the state Governor, Seyi Makinde, held its congress at the main bowl of the Lekan Salami Sports Complex, Adamasingba, in Ibadan.

Announcing the congress results held at Lekan Salami Sports Complex, the Congress Chairman, who is also the Governor of Enugu State, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, declared Mr Dayo Ogungbenro as the new PDP state cad Also

Meanwhile, Chief Michael Okunlade emerged as the chairman of the Adeola-Akande-led faction with a total vote of 2,712 from delegates across the 33 local government areas of the state.

Other executive members are Abiodun Oyesola, Secretary; Mr Matthew Abioye, Deputy Chairman; Bola Akinyemi, Publicity Secretary; and Adekola Adeoye, Youth Leader.

Ogungbenro and Okunlade, in their separate acceptance speeches, promised to unify the party ahead of the 2023 general elections.

Makinde commended the congress committee for the peaceful conduct of the congress and called on the aggrieved party members across the state to return to the party for integration, saying such members would be accommodated.

Other officers that were elected from the Adeola-Akande-led faction are Matthew Abioye (Deputy Chairman), Mr Abiodun Oyesola (State Secretary), Pa Olawuwo (Vice Chairman Oyo South), Akeem Ariola (Financial Secretary), Mogaji Akinyemi (Publicity Secretary) and Asiwaju Adekola Adeoye re-elected (Youth leader) of the party.
