BREAKING: Actress Cynthia Okereke is dead

Veteran Nollywood actress Cynthia Okereke is dead.
Announcing the unfortunate incident on Wednesday in an Instagram post, popular actor and filmmaker, Joseph Okechukwu, stated that Okereke died on Tuesday evening.

Sharing the actress’s picture, Okechukwu said he was about to pay for Cynthia’s flight ticket to come to America before her death.

He wrote: “REST IN PEACE, Nwanyi oma. I’m shattered beyond words.

“The fact that I was about to pay for your flight ticket to come and finish what we started only to hear you went to be with Lord just last night is one of the toughest things I’ve had to deal with in recent times.

“I pray I’m able to recover from the shock. Life is really just a mist. One minute you have it, the next you don’t.

“For the more than 20 years that I’ve known you, you’ve been such an amazing, decent and lovely soul to be around. Words fail me. May your gentle soul rest on till we meet again in glory. .”

Nigerian politician, wife and medical 'middleman' jailed for organ harvesting plot.

Politician Ike Ekweremadu, 60, his wife Beatrice, 56, and 25-year-old daughter Sonia stood trial accused of a conspiracy to bring the man to Britain from Lagos for his organ.

The couple, along with medical "middleman" Dr Obinna Obeta, 50, were found guilty in the Old Bailey in March.

Their daughter, Sonia Ekweremadu - who has a serious kidney condition - wept as she was cleared of the same charge.

At a sentencing hearing on Friday, Ekweremadu was jailed for nine years and eight months, his wife Beatrice was sentenced to four years and six months in prison, while Obeta received a 10-year prison term.

Mr Justice Johnson told the defendants: "In each of your cases the offence you committed is so serious that neither a fine nor a community sentence can be justified."

It was alleged the 21-year-old street trader was to be rewarded for donating the organ to Sonia Ekweremadu, in an £80,000 private procedure at London's Royal Free Hospital.

The case marked the first time defendants have been convicted under the Modern Slavery Act of an organ harvesting conspiracy.

While it is lawful to donate a kidney, it becomes criminal if money or another material advantage is rewarded.

The prosecution claimed the donor was offered up to £7,000 along with the promise of a better life in the UK.

The donor did not understand until his first appointment with a consultant at the hospital that he was there for a kidney transplant, the Old Bailey was told.

According to the consultant, he had a "limited understanding" of why he was there and was "visibly relieved" at being told the operation would not go ahead.

It was claimed the man was falsely presented as Sonia Ekweremadu's cousin in a failed attempt to persuade medics to carry out the procedure at the Royal Free Hospital.

The donor cannot be identified for legal reasons.

Defendants 'intended harm' to donor

On the question of harm to the victim, the judge said: "The transplant did not go ahead but each intended that it should go ahead and you each intended the harm to the donor that would result....

"He would have faced spending the rest of his life with only one kidney and without the requisite funding for the required aftercare."

He added that the risks had not been properly explained to the victim and there had been no consent "in any meaningful sense"

Father allegedly locks up teenage children, starves them to death in Ogun.

A father of three, who was simply identified as Ogunfadeke has starved two of his children to death in Ogun State.

Ogunfadeke was arrested by operatives of the Ogun State Amotekun Corps in Ibiade, Ogun Waterside Local Government Area of the State.

His arrest, newsmen learnt, followed a complaint lodged by the suspect’s estranged wife, Busola Otusegun, who alleged that the man killed two of their children.

The Ogun State Amotekun Commander, David Akinremi, had said the complainant narrated that her former husband insisted on having custody of the three children when their marriage broke up, a few years ago.

She said they had agreed that the children, aged 18, 17 and 16, would live with their father, the suspect.

The Amotekun boss quoted the woman as stating that she had relocated to Warri, Delta State to marry another man but was in constant touch with the suspect concerning the welfare of the three children and was always told all was well with them.

The woman had explained that she did not have direct access to any of her three children.

Akinremi said on March 30, 2023, one of the three children reportedly came across his aunt in Ibiade, where he lives with his father and recounted their experience with the man; which he said led to the death of his two elder siblings – Yusuf Ogunfadeke (‘M’ 18 years) and Dasola Ogunfadeke (‘F’ 17 years).

It was learnt that the two teenagers died between April and June, 2022 in Ijebu-Ode, where they were residing with their father at the time.

The boy had disclosed that “their father chained and locked them in a solitary confinement, without food and water for over three months, which led to the death of the two siblings but he miraculously survived the ordeal.”

The man, according to the Amotekun Commander, admitted during interrogation that he confined the children for months, but he denied not feeding them and being responsible for their death.

The suspect had stated that he locked the children due to their “involvement in stealing, hence the need to ensure they were prevented from such criminal action.”

He further claimed that the two deceased children were taken to the hospital for treatment at different times when they fell ill but they died in the process.

“What is, however, curious about his defence is that the hospital where he claimed the two children died in Ijebu Ode could neither be located nor where he allegedly buried them behind a rented apartment he lived in Ijebu-Ode before relocating to his present abode in Ibiade with the third child for possible exhumation be traced.

“The fact that he refused to make the incidents known to any member of the family also gives course for concern, more so when the suspect is a herbalist, thus further fueling the suspicion of having killed the deceased for possible rituals,” Akinremi submitted.

He added that the case would be transferred to the State CIID for further investigation with a view to establishing further facts that will facilitate his prosecution.

Hakimi: I needed time to digest this shock – PSG defender’s ex-wife, Hiba Abouk speaks

Paris Saint-Germain defender Achraf Hakimi’s ex-wife, Hiba Abouk, has broken her silence following her divorce from the Moroccan footballer.

Abouk said she was calm about the situation despite the r**e charges against Hakimi, adding that she needed time to digest the shock.

Hakimi was accused of r**e back in February, and Abouk later disclosed that the couple were in the middle of a divorce as a result.

Speaking to ELLE, Abouk said, “I am fine. There are days when it is like this, and others in which you’ve to know how to take blows and make decisions, sometimes complicated, and get used to new situations. Who would’ve imagined that in addition to facing the usual pain that a separation entails and accepting the grief that the failure of a family project to which I had given myself body and soul entails, I would’ve to face this ignominy. I needed time to digest this shock.

“When you separate, you restructure your life, but it’s not anything special either: you’ve to take iron out of the matter. It’s true that, with two children, it is emotionally complicated, but I’m not the first and I will not be the last. The important thing is that I have the peace of mind of having tried and having done everything I had to do. There are decisions that cannot be made overnight. For me it’s a premise not to rush in moments of crisis.”

Meanwhile, there have been claims that the settlement could be tricky as Hakimi has registered a huge part of his wealth in his mother’s name.

Abouk and Hakimi have two children, Amín, 3, and Naim, 1, together.

The pair married in 2020, two years after meeting in 2018.

BREAKING: Witness saw NSCDC kill 8- month -old, Mother in Imo, say police

The Imo State state police command has said that an eyewitness revealed that he saw stray bullets from the officials of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps kill an eight -month -old baby and her mother at Fire service junction in Owerri, the state capital on Monday.

Responding to an inquiry from our correspondent, the spokesperson for the police in the state, Henry Okoye, said that an eyewitness disclosed that stray bullets from NSCDC personnel who were in a moving vehicle hit the mother and child who were waiting for a vehicle at the ever- busy fire service junction in Owerri.

Okoye said that the victims were rushed to a hospital in Owerri where the baby was pronounced dead.

The police spokesman said ”investigation is on going but an eyewitness account said that stray bullets from NSCDC personnel hit the woman and her baby. They were rushed to a hospital where the baby was confirmed dead. This eyewitness account has not foreclosed investigation. Investigation is ongoing to ascertain what actually happened.”

Okeomanews recalls that a nursing mother and her 8-month-old baby were killed on Monday at Fire service junction in Owerri by stray bullets by men in a moving vehicle.

An account also revealed that another woman suspected to be the mother of the nursing woman was also shot.

According to an eyewitness, the deceased were waiting for a vehicle at Fire Service junction when they were hit by bullets.

The eyewitness said “This is the most surprising death I have ever witnessed. I was also waiting for a taxi with the nursing mother where I was admiring her baby.

“She was with her mother who helped her to carry her baby who should be about eight months old. But when I left there to buy something, I heard gunshots across. Unfortunately, it was the same people I was standing with that are lying lifeless, killed by men in a moving vehicle. This is unbelievable."

BREAKING: APC CECPC sacks Akpanudoedehe, passes vote of no confidence.

The APC Caretaker Extraordinary Convention Planning Committee (CECPC) through a notice issued on Tuesday, March 8, 2022, by a majority of the members of the committee passed a vote of no confidence on the erstwhile secretary of the committee, Sen Akpanudoedehe.
The notice has 10 of the 12 members of the committee signed including Senator Ken Nnamani, Governor Abubakar Sani Bello, Senator Yusuf Abubakar Yusuf, Prof Tahir Mammah, Senator Abba Alli, H.E David Lyon, Hon Akinremi Olàide, Mrs Stella Okotete, Barr Ismaeel Ahmad and Dr James Lalu.

The committee stated that the sack of Senator Udoedehe is pursuant to Article 17 subsection 5 of the constitution of the All Progressives Congress which allows a majority of any constituted ad-hoc committee of the party to pass a vote of no confidence on any member found wanting.
It will be recalled that Senator Udoedehe has been absent in most of the meetings of the APC CECPC over the last couple of days and this may not be unconnected with the recently obtained notice dated March 8, 2022.
It appears that the letter President Muhammadu Buhari sent to the President of Progressives Governor’s Forum H.E Senator Abubakar Atiku Bagudu where the President had stated that a leadership change might be necessary for ensuring that the committee meets its set objectives could be connected with this notice.
In the same vein, sources close to the committee who would like to remain anonymous hinted that the committee is already propped to welcome the Chairman H.E Mai Mala Buni who might be returning to the country after his medical trip abroad any time soon.

Strike: NANS threatens nationwide protest from March 28.

The National Association of Nigerian Students has given the Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities till March 28 to resolve their differences and ensure that the union’s ongoing strike is called off.

NANS’ position was contained in a statement on Wednesday by its President, Sunday Ashefon.

Ashefon threatened that Nigerian students would take to the streets at the expiration of the ultimatum if the strike continues.

The statement read, “We advise the Federal Government and ASUU, in their best interests, to reach a compromise between now and Monday, March 28, 2022 or risk our unprecedented fury.

“We hope the time between now and March 28 will afford our influential past leaders the window of opportunity to lobby their friends in government to see the danger our collective rage will cause the nation.

“The National Assembly should also do everything possible within this time to end the strike. Since they rejected the bill prohibiting public officers from sending their wards to institutions abroad, they have the mandate to make our public institutions work and now that they are failing in that responsibility, the public will respond appropriately.

“Should the strike continue after our ultimatum, students across the country will resume to the new university created by the Federal Government and ASUU called ‘The University of the Street’, with main campus on the Airport Road, annex campuses in all the major roads in Abuja and Distance Learning Centres in all the federal roads across the 36 states of the federation.

“I therefore direct students to bring their mattresses and cooking utensils while resuming in their new campus in Abuja and all the designated campuses across the country.”

NANS also passed a vote of no confidence on the Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige; and his counterpart in the Ministry of Education, Adamu Adamu.

Hoodlums kill two prison officials with dynamite in Imo.

Two prison officials were on Wednesday killed by yet-to-be-identified gunmen in Okigwe town, Imo State.

Newsmen gathered that the attack, which happened at the Umulolo section of the town, caused panic in the community.

A security officer, who asked not to be identified, told newsmen that the officers were ambushed by their attackers.

The source said, “Two Hilux vans of the Imo Custodial Centre were attacked on Wednesday morning by gunmen at Umulolo Okigwe. The attackers threw dynamite into the vehicles. Two officers were killed on the spot, while others were rushed to a hospital. While one Hilux van was destroyed by the dynamite, the other was not affected."

“The unaffected van has been rescued and returned to base at the command’s headquarters in Owerri. The officers are attached to Operation Search and Flush, established by the Imo State Government to deal with crimes in the state. They took off from Owerri in the morning and on reaching Okigwe, the gunmen, who laid siege, ambushed them.”

The spokesperson of the police, Goodluck Uboegbulem, said the command was assessing the situation.

Ex-Imo Deputy Governor, Madumere advocates more devolution of powers to States.

The former Deputy Governor of Imo State, Prince Eze Madumere, has called for more devolution of powers to the state, saying it will address Nigeria’s fundamental challenges.
He submitted that Nigeria must design its own democratic ideals that are in tandem with its peculiarities.
Madumere argued that for Nigeria to get out of the woods of ethnocentric politics, which he said has distorted the dream of the founding fathers, it must exorcise itself of the spirit of ethnicity, mediocrity, and concentration of power at the centre.
He stated this during an event in Owerri, the Imo State capital.
He said enthronement of constitutionalism, justice and good leadership will unite Nigeria as they will solve ethnocentric and tribal politics.
Madumere voted for constitutionalism, which he described as a taming scripture to dictatorial tendency and other traits that might thwart the democratic ideals and their tenets.
He also stressed the need for good leadership, saying that Nigeria must eschew nepotism while upholding justice and equity in the polity.

Sack: Ebonyi lawmakers hold plenary despite court order, declare 3 PDP members’ seats vacant.

Some lawmakers of the Ebonyi state house of assembly participated in a plenary of the house on Tuesday, despite an order of an Abuja federal high court sacking them.

On March 8, Inyang Ekwo, presiding judge at a federal high court in Abuja, sacked David Umahi, governor of Ebonyi; Eric Igwe, his deputy and 16 members of the state assembly over their defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The judge held that the votes polled belonged to the PDP and cannot be transferred to the APC, and ordered the lawmakers to vacate their positions with immediate effect.

Consequently, Ekwo ordered the PDP to present candidates to replace the lawmakers or, in the alternative, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) should conduct a fresh poll within 90 days.

Speaking to journalists at the plenary session in Abakaliki on Tuesday, Arinze Chukwu, member representing Ishielu south and the house committee chairman on information, said the judgment has been appealed.

“We have appealed the judgment and until it is determined, we are not barred from holding plenary,” he said.

“No court, therefore, stops us from holding plenary and we will continue to serve our people.”

The lawmaker added that during the plenary, the house declared the seats of three of its members vacant over their “resignation”.

According to him, the affected members are Victor Aleke (PDP–Ebonyi north-west), Okechukwu Ali (PDP–Ishielu north), and Franca Okpo (PDP–Abakaliki north).

“Their letters were submitted to the house on March 10 and they contended that they want to engage in other ventures other than lawmaking,” he said.

Francis Nwifuru, speaker of the assembly and one of the lawmakers sacked by the court, was said to have presided over the plenary.
