Ugo is a priceless and beautiful bird. It is not something you see more often. Hence the Igbo adage: “Onye hụrụ ugo ṅụrịa maka na a dịghị ahụ ugo kwa daa” (he who sees eagle should rejoice because it’s not seen always)

The Igbo see Ugo (the eagle) as a unique creature and highly symbolic. Many names stem from it like Ugochi, Ugomma, and Ugochukwu.

In the olden days, when a man becomes successful or achieved something, he puts a feather of ugo on his hair or cap, and everyone sees him and screams:

“Turu ugo!”

He has done well.

Only those with dignity, self-worth or regarded as straightforward people without blemish put it's feathers on their hats.

It Is a very symbolic bird to the Igbo people.

King Idigo and the White Missionaries.

Christian missionaries in the late 19th century were making significant progress in the evangelization of the Igbo People of the Onitsha-Idemili axis. When news of the missionaries activities reached king Idigo Ogbuanyinya of Aguleri (a town in present-day Anambra state) in 1890, he sent a special invitation to the foreign guests, inviting them to begin their evangelical activities in his community. Eager to learn the white mens' ways.
king Idigo gave them a large parcel of land to build a mission house and even agreed to convert to the new religion. On the day of his baptism, upon hearing the terms of his 'rebirth' into Christianity (which included relinquishing many of his adored traditional titles, donating a portion of his wealth, and divorcing all but one of his several wives), he refused to convert.
