EFCC Seeks to Set Aside Committal order Against Chairman

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, received with shock, report of the ruling by Justice Chizoba Oji of a High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in Maitama, Abuja committing the Executive Chairman for contempt over the failure to comply with a November 21st, 2018 order of the court directing the Commission to return seized assets comprising a Range Rover (Super charge) and the sum of N40, 000,000.00 (Forty Million Naira) to the applicant.

This ruling is surprising as it creates a wrong impression of the person of the Executive Chairman of the EFCC as encouraging impunity. As far as the relationship between the EFCC and the judiciary is concerned, The Executive Chairman, Mr. Abdulrasheed Bawa has been an apostle of rule of law, due process, and close collaboration between the two institutions in justice administration. As an investigator, and the only Chief Executive of a law enforcement agency who regularly goes to court, the Executive Chairman will not tolerate impunity or disregard any lawful orders of court.

Abdulrasheed Bawa, in his capacity as Executive Chairman of the EFCC since March 5, 2022, did not disregard any order of court. For the benefit of the public, the said order of the FCT High Court was given on November 21, 2018, three years before Abdulrasheed became EFCC Chairman. This fact is germane as the contempt process is quasi criminal in nature and must be served on the person involved. In this case, Bawa as incumbent chairman of the EFCC, was neither served form 48 nor form 49.

American court releases certified true copies of Bola Tinubu’s drug dealing, money laundering case in Chicago

The United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois has released fresh documents holding Bola Tinubu’s encounter with American authorities over allegations of narcotics trafficking and money laundering.

Mr Tinubu, the presidential candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress and former Lagos governor, has come under intense public ridicule and political onslaught for his role in an early 1990s drug trafficking case in Chicago.

Mr Tinubu has not commented on the narcotics affair, which has made headlines since at least the mid-aughts, preferring instead to discuss other parts of his background in corporate accounting, consultancy and pro-democracy activism. He, however, informed the electoral office INEC in his application to stand for the election that he had no prior criminal convictions.

Mr Tinubu’s allies have also made efforts to downplay the matter entirely as a trivial distraction to Nigeria’s democratic experience because it happened decades ago in a distant lang.

But Nigerians have insisted that the presidential candidate should come clean on his involvement in the case, which saw him forfeit up to $460,000 to the U.S. authorities in 1993.

The 56-page document released by the district court’s headquarters in Chicago did not include crucial new details, but it further confirmed snippets of the matter that had been shared spontaneously by the media for years. Journalist David Hundeyin also reignited interest in Mr Tinubu’s drug-dealing background following a July 13 article in West Africa Weekly.

EFCC boss lands in serious trouble, sent to Kuje prison.

A High Court in Abuja has convicted the chairman of the EFCC, Abdulrasheed Bawa for contempt of court in relation to his agency’s failure to comply with an earlier order.

In a ruling on Tuesday, Justice Chizoba Oji, held that,

“Having continued wilfully in disobedience to the order of this court, he should be committed to prison at Kuje Correctional Centre for his disobedience.”

The daughter of former deputy Senate president, Ike Ekweremadu, appeared in a UK court today November 7 to answer to claims that she trafficked a homeless ma’m into the country to harvest his organs for herself.

Ekweremadu, and his wife, Beatrice were arrested in June this year and have been standing trial alongside their doctor, Obinna Obeta, for charges bothering on conspiracy to arrange the travel of another person with a view to exploit him and harvest his organ.

It is alleged they conspired together, with others Unkwown and with another family member Isaac Ekweremadu, to arrange the travel of a 21-year-old man identified as David Ukpo Nwamini, with a view to exploiting him between 1 August 2021 and 5 May this year. They have been accused of facilitating his travel from Lagos to London to remove one of his kidneys and use same for their daughter, Sonia, who has a kidney-related disease and has been on dialysis for some time.

While in court today, the prosecutors claim the plot was to harvest Nwamini’s organ for Sonia’s benefit. The prosecutors told the court that the Ekweremadus and their doctor were arrested after the young man, who previously loved on the streets of Lagos, turned up at Staines police station, claiming he was the victim of trafficking.

Protestors claim Nwamini told police officers he had arrived in the UK on 20 February this year and had been taken to Royal Free Hospital for tests, Nwamini said he had returned to the house he had been staying in, where he was ‘treated effectively as a slave’. Prosecutors claim he escaped the address and was homeless for theee days before going to the police.

Mr. Ekweremadu and his doctor are currently on remand in HMP Wandsworth and HMP Belmarsh respectively. They did not appear at court today. Mrs Ekweremadu was granted bail at a hearing in July and appeared in court today alongside Sonia.

The President of the Nigerian Cancer Society, Dr Adamu Umar, said Nigeria has only 13 radiotherapy machines for its teeming population. Dr Umar, however, said most of the radiotherapy machines on government healthcare facilities are not functioning. Radiation therapy is a type of cancer treatment that uses beams of intense energy to kill cancer cells.

The alert was issued in a statement released on Friday, November 4, by Bisi Kazeem, FRSC’s public education officer.

The agency said the warning became necessary after Toyota’s recalled 14,799 “defective” Lexus vehicles.

It was also noted that some Lexus NX260 vehicles with “defective” electric parking brake (EPB) system have been recalled.

The statement read;

“The Federal Road safety Corps wishes to draw the attention of the motoring public, particularly those who are presently using Lexis NX260, Lexus NX3650h and Lexus NX400h + manufactured between 31 March 2021 to 26 April 2022, to a faulty programming of the Lane Keeping Assist (LKA) system, which has prompted the Company to recall the categories of the listed vehicles.

Kwara state Governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, has appointed famous skit maker, Abdulgafar Ahmed Abiola , popularly known as “Cute Abiola” as his special Assistant on Creative Industries.
