THE ROLE OF ALEKWU IN PREVENTION OF ADULTERY IN IDOMA TRADITIONAL MARRIAGE.

In Idoma land, adultery is one of the most abominable act to commit, this is because it is one of the things that causes most divorces in the society. As a way to prevent this, alekwu, which act as a watchdog in Idoma society have its own ways of punishing those who commits adultery and refuses to come for cleansing.

Alekwu, the most dreaded god in Idoma land highly forbids adultery and it has sets out ways by which offenders will be punished. In the next paragraph, I will do my possible best to explain how the punishment is been done and also how to avert the dangers involved.

If a woman commits adultery and did not confess so that appropriate cleansing be carried out, the following steps will be taken out by alekwu in punishing her family.
First, the first male child of the family will die, followed by the remaining children. Their death will occur in such a way that it will be obvious that an offence has been committed against alekwu.

After the death of the children and the woman still refuses to confess, then she will be struck with paralysis which will eventually lead to her death if the cleansing is not done.

Also, if a man is aware that his wife is committing adultery and he is still eating her food, he will also be struck with paralysis which will eventually lead to his death if proper cleansing is not done.

In as much as adultery is highly prohibited, alekwu still forgive its offenders. The offenders are only forgiven if they confesses and proper cleaning is done.
