A train crushed a woman and her car as she tried to drive across the train tracks in the Kubwa area of Abuja on Thursday.

Multiple Twitter users claim the incident happened on Thursday morning.

Meanwhile, an eyewitness, Olisa Ogbechie, alleged the police used force to chase people, who wanted to help away from the scene.

"In an attempt to rescue the victim by first responders and also cover the incident, the policemen at the scene, on-board the train became hostile.

"I and a few others were brutally assaulted by the policemen as they hit and sprayed pepper spray in my eyes and two others, they pointed guns as they harassed us away from the scene," he said.

Expect mother of all strikes if our withheld salaries are not paid says ASUU

The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, University of Nigeria, Nsukka, UNN, chapter, on Tuesday, vowed to commence the “mother of all strikes,” if the Federal Government refuses to pay members of the Union their withheld eight months salary arrears.

The ASUU-UNN Chairman, Comrade Christian Opata, who addressed pressmen before members of the Union embarked on a peaceful protest at the UNN main campus in Nsukka, Enugu State, said the Institution would not hold any Senate or Departmental Board meetings to approve Students results.

Comrade Opata said that “it raises a moral question,” for the Federal Government to renege on honouring agreements it signed with the members of the Union since 2009.

He equally said that the government is tactically “unleashing anarchy on the nation,” by adopting no-work-no-pay strategy and equally expecting members of the Union to do all the arrears of academic works accumulated during the period of the industrial action, adding that students who may not be graduated as a result of government’s action on the Union may plunge the nation into anarchy.

The ASUU-UNN Chairman however, said that the members of the Union are not in confrontation with the University Management in their efforts to seek redress from the Federal Government.

“The bone of contention has been that we have a government that refused to honour an agreement it willingly signed. This raises moral question because this is an agreement the government signed willingly through collective bargaining, yet, it refused to honour it since 2009.

“To make matters worse, the same government which reneged on the agreement has turned to punish those it reached the agreement with and they held our children at home for eight months. We suspended the strike and the same government adopted pro rata payment as if to say that we are labourers of casual work.

ASUU To Appeal Court Order Directing Lecturers To Call Off Strike

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) will appeal the ruling of the National Industrial Court which ordered the lecturers to call off their ongoing strike.

Mr Femi Falana, who is the counsel to the union, confirmed this to Channels Television on Wednesday hours after the ruling of the court, saying he was preparing the grounds of appeal at the time of this report.

The industrial action by ASUU has continued to take a toll on the nation’s education, especially the tertiary sector as academic activities in most government-owned universities have been halted for over seven months.

ASUU Strike May end Sept 20, Says Falana, Counsel to ASUU

The National Industrial Court sitting in Abuja has fixed September 19 to deliver ruling on the suit filed by the Federal Government against the striking Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) on September 20.

Meanwhile, ASUU has given a glimmer of hope that the dispute may be resolved at a scheduled stakeholders meeting with members of the House of Representatives.

Counsel to the association, Mr. Femi Falana has informed the court that ASUU will be meeting stakeholders in the House of Representative on September 20 to ensure that the matter is resolved.

The Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr. Chris Ngige had on behalf of the Federal Government filed the suit before the court by way of referral to resolve the issue of the ongoing strike by ASUU.

Specifically, the suit is seeking the order of court directing ASUU to call off its seven months strike.

When the case was called yesterday, counsel to the Federal Government, Mr J.U.K Igwe (SAN), informed the court he has filed two motions before court on behalf of his client.

While the first motion is for an interlocutory injunction, the second is an affidavit of facts in support of the referral sent by his client.

Igwe submitted that some questions were raised with a full complement of a written address.

He informed the court that although the processess have all been served on the respondents, he is yet to receive any response from ASUU.
Igwe thereafter proceeded in urging the court to take the applications as they were ripe for hearing.
While emphasising on the importance of the case, the Federal government’s counsel stated that the issue raised in the suit is of matter of urgent and national interest as million of students have been at home since February 14.

However, counsel to ASUU, Mr Femi Falana, SAN, in his response acknowledged receiving process from the claimant and stated that they were already filing their reply in the court’s registry.

* Naptan holding a meeting on 6th of September to take drastic action on Asuu stubborness

* pro chancellors of state owned universities are also taking a drastic step on Asuu.

* FG, NUC and VCs are also taking a bold step to ensure all federal schools resume Next week.

What Asuu should have done, they should have applied diplomatic approach in negotiating with government soft pedal in their agitation, suspend strike and then resume negotiations with new government. But they intend to kill the educational system also demanding for unworked 6 month salaries and asking us to sacrifice 2 years for our generation.

Have they forgotten that some student will exceed NYSC age limit, paying double unused house rent and precious time we have wasted.

should have a rethink before it become worse for them.

Group To ASUU :
Emulate other University Associations; call off action for sake of parents, students

A group, the Campaign for Equal Rights and Opportunities for all Nigerians, CERON, has appealed to the striking members of Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, to make concessions in their demands and call off the lingering industrial action in the interest of the worried parents and students.
The group urged ASUU to emulate other striking members of associations in public universities who made concessions and called off their action after heeding the appeals by parents and students.

The Secretary of CERON, Mr. Francis Odiir who made the appeal weekend in Makurdi lamented that Nigerians were getting agitated over the strike which had crippled Nigeria’s public universities and forced several students into social vices and crime

I PITY THE COUNTRY, NIGERIA WILL BE THE LOSER FOR IT-----ASUU PRESIDENT LAMENT

So many lecturers are leaving to engage in farming and others; lecturers are tired of the treatment they’re receiving from the government and because of this, they are looking for alternatives. So many more will leave even after the strike too.

‘’I pity the country; Nigeria will be the loser for it. Instead of coming to the table; look at how they will solve the issue, rather, they believe in punishing lecturers. It’s so sad. Your lecturers went on strike, you believe they will become hungry and come back to beg. Many lecturers will also leave to venture into other areas; some are also looking at becoming self-employed"

ASUU should not be keeping us at home because of the six months’ salaries that have not been paid---NANS PRESIDENT URGE ASUU

The NANS President, Sunday Asefon, has enjoined the union(ASUI) to seek alternative means of resolving issues on payment of salary backlog.

He said, “To our lecturers, by now I think they have to be considerate. We are not saying they should forfeit their six months’ salaries that the Federal Government is saying it will not pay; what we are saying is that they should also have the interest of the students, who are still at home for over six months, at heart. They should consider us.

“They should shift ground at this level and find a means to pursue the struggle on their six-month backlog of salaries. Keeping us at home will not solve it.

“ASUU should not be keeping us at home because of the six months’ salaries that have not been paid, which the Federal Government is saying it is not paying and I know it will definitely pay it.

“ASUU should find other means of pursuing their issues. We are not saying all they are pursuing is not genuine but they should find other means to do so.”

SSANU, NASU Suspend Strike After Meeting With Education Minister

The Senior Staff Association of Nigeria Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Allied and Education Institutions (NASU) on Saturday suspended their strike actions after a brief meeting with the Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu in Abuja.

The suspension is expected to take effect from Wednesday.

According to the education minister, the Federal Government has committed N50 billion to pay earned allowances for members of SSANU, NASU and the Academic Staff Union of Universities.

However, activities in public universities are expected to remain limited as ASUU remains on strike.

FG Promised N60, 000 Increment In Professor's Salaries - ASUU

Fresh facts have emerged on why the Academic Staff Union of Universities rejected the proposal by the Federal Government.

But the zonal coordinator, Port Harcourt zone, Stanley Ogoun, in a statement made available to The PUNCH noted that the Federal Government noted that it would increase the salaries of professors by N60,000 while other lecturers would have their salaries increased within the range of N30,000 and N60,000.

"Nigerians should be aware of offers the so-called minister came up with. These are:

(a) 170 billion naira for revitalisation in the 2023 budget;

(b) a promise to increase by N60,000 the salary of a professor at the bar in next year’s budget;

(c) no statement on the amendment of the National University Commission Act gathering dust at the National Assembly

(d) payment of two tranches of outstanding Earned Academic Allowance in next year’s budget;

(e) a promise to adopt the University Transparency and Accountability Solution; and

(f) another promise to release the white papers.”

ASUU STRIKE UPDATE

All contentious issues between the government and ASUU had been settled except the quest for members’ salaries for the period of strike to be paid----Minister of Education Adamu speaks

The federal government on Thursday insisted that it will not concede to the demand by the members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities to be paid the backlog of salaries withheld during the ongoing strike.

It described the no-work-no-pay policy as the only hindrance in the FG-ASUU negotiations.

The Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, stated this at the 47th session of the State House Ministerial Media Briefing organised by the Presidential Communications Team at the A*o Rock Villa, Abuja.

“All contentious issues between the government and ASUU had been settled except the quest for members’ salaries for the period of strike to be paid, a demand that Buhari has flatly rejected,” Adamu explained.

He argued that ASUU went on strike despite the Buhari regime and agencies such as TETFUND and UBEC directly investing trillions of naira in education.

Adamu also disclosed that five of the six striking university-based unions will likely return to work within the next one week, whereas ASUU’s remains uncertain.

According to him, the FG rejected ASUU’s demand to be paid the backlog of emoluments for the past five months because it believes that there should be penalties for their actions.

He, however, noted that consultations were still ongoing among ASUU members to determine when to call off the strike.

*BREAKING !!!!!!!!*
The Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, on Thursday, said it is the responsibility of the Academic Staff Union of Universities to compensate students for the time wasted during the six-month strike, not the Federal Government.
He also said the government will not concede to the union’s demand to pay lecturers their emoluments for the six months of no academic activities.
Adamu suggested that the affected students should “take ASUU to court” to claim damages incurred over the strike period.
The Education minister said this at the 47th Session of the State House Ministerial Briefing organised by the Presidential Communications Team at the A*o Rock Villa, Abuja.
