Father, 2 Sons Confirmed Dead In Anambra Building Collapse

A man identified as Chizoba Aniefuna and his two sons, have lost their lives following the collapse of their one-storey building in Egbu Umuenem, Otolo Nnewi, Nnewi North Local Government Area of Anambra State.

A relation of the man, who was also trapped in the building, which was still under construction, and whose name was not immediately given, was rescued and rushed to St. Felix Hospital, Nnewi, where he is receiving treatment.

Officials of Council for Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria, COREN, and Transition Committee Chairman of Nnewi North council, Mr. Chris Obiora, have visited the scene.
Manual labourers were already at the scene on rescue mission as the excavator brought to rescue the victims broke down at the site.

Addressing journalists after the dead bodies were brought out from the debris, Anambra State Chairman of COREN, Victor Meju, attributed the incident to poor foundation, poor concrete mixture, poor quality of materials, poor wearing cost capacity, non-conformity with standards and non approval from relevant regulatory authorities.

Describing the incident as an avoidable tragedy, Meju directed the cordoning off of the site, adding that the owner of the building, Mr. Chukwunafu Anamanjo, would be invited for questioning to aid investigation.

Transition Committee Chairman of Nnewi North, Obiora, on his part, urged the people to always make use of certified engineers and other relevant personnel in the building sector, noting that monitoring teams were also important to ensure that the standards were strictly adhered to.

The World Health Organisationโ€™s findings in 2020 also indicated that about 30% of Nigerians have one form of mental illness or the other. With the COVID-19 pandemic, the security situation in the country, and other social issues such as unemployment, economic issues, poverty, financial challenges, and insecurity, among others. It is believed that these figures have gone up significantly.

People continue to jump off the Lagos Third Mainland Bridge into the Lagoon, or ingest โ€˜Sniperโ€™, a disinfectant and all-purpose cleaner, turned into a popular and easily available poison, to commit su***de. In a country where su***de is erroneously associated with spiritual causes, plus a paucity of psychiatric experts, curbing the malaise is undoubtedly challenging.

One example of this tragic trend is the case of a man in Owerri who committed su***de because his lover refused his proposal. Another is the case of a 20-year-old man named Chijioke who committed su***de by hanging himself in an uncompleted building at Mgboapipia, Umuokoto Umudibia Nekede in Owerri West Local Government Area of Imo State.

Family members arrested in Anambra for forcefully taking the underaged children of a widow after accusing her of killing her husband

A woman, Felicia Nwosu, was arrested alongside her daughter, Chinenye Nwosu, for forcefully taking the underage children of her late son's widow in Ndiowu, Orumba North local government area of Anambra State.

The arrest was carried out at the weekend after a complaint was made to the Anambra Ministry of Women and Social Welfare by the widow, Mrs. Sharon Nwosu.

The widow, a native of Enumbom Ndiowu, who was uncontrollably in tears at the office of the Women Affairs Commissioner, Hon. Hon Ify Obinabo, while narrating her ordeal, said her in-laws took her two children from her after her husband's death and accused her of killing him.

According to Sharon, the issue started after she refused to hand over her late husband's laptop and phone to Ifeanyi Nwosu, a younger brother of her late husband who demanded to take possession of the said property.

She said she was shocked that such a request was made a few days after her late husband's demise.

Sharon revealed that the in-laws asked her to hand over the laptop so that the younger brother would be able to take over the contract her late husband who was an architect just secured, warning her not to tell anyone.

Sharon also said that she was still dealing with her husband's demise only to find out that her mother had also died the same day.

According to the widow, days before they took her children, they consistently told her kids that she was responsible for their father's death and broke Into her room after her husband's funeral to cart away all the money sympathizers gave to her.

Hon Ify Obinabo registered her displeasure over the development and assured the widow of getting her children back from her in-laws.

The alleged culprits were later arrested and brought to the Anambra State Criminal Investigation Department Awka where they were served a letter mandating them to appear before the Commissioner on Tuesday, August 29, 2023, with all the parties involved in the case for further investigation.

Anambra Pastor Commits Su***de After Lover Jilted Him

A pastor of a Pentecostal Church in Nnewi, Anambra State, identified as Pastor Prosper Igboke, has committed su!cide as he jumped down from a two-storey building in Nnewi.

It was reported that Igboke jumped down from the building and d!ed instantly after he was jilted by his lover, who he had spent so much money on.

A relative of the deceased said the 30-year-old man from Leru community in Umunneochi Local Government Area, Abia State, had trained his lover in the University, after which she declined his marriage proposal.

โ€œThe incident happened last month. The man (Igboke) was 30 years old at the time of his dยฃath. His girlfriend, whom he intended to marry disappointed him after seeing her through the university.

He jumped down from a two-storey building and d!ed. I am surprised that a man of this age and a pastor can do this.โ€

According to their village tradition, the relative said he was buried in a forest for committing โ€œsacrilegeโ€.

โ€œHe was eventually buried on Friday in a bush in his community,โ€ the source added.

The spokesperson of the state police command, DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, said the incident was not reported at the police command.

Putin's former ally turned enemy , Wagner Group's Prigozhin, Dies in plane crash...

Just two months ago, he threatened Putin's reign with an unprecedented mutiny that almost tumbled Moscow.

Putin's pattern of elimination has not changed. A former KGB agent turned president would know how to eliminate his enemies easier than any leader on earth.

BREAKING:
MEDICAL, DENTAL CONSULTANTS ISSUE FG 21-DAY ULTIMATUM TO THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT TO MEET ITS DEMANDS OR FACE INDUSTRIAL DISHARMONY (STRIKE).

MDCAN made this known in a communique issued on Tuesday at the end of its extraordinary National Executive Council meeting which was held virtually.

The communique was signed by its President, Dr Victor Makanjuola, and Secretary-General, Dr Yemi Raji.

The NEC said it was dismayed by the non-implementation of the jointly agreed upward review of CONMESS and the introduction of Accoutrement allowance with the Nigerian Medical Association, as the released circular only captured the percentage increase on the basic salary, as against applying it to both the basic salaries and all allowances except hazard allowance.

The communique read, โ€œThis error has resulted in the complete exclusion of the clinical lecturers (Honorary Consultants) from benefitting from the upward review. The commencement date for the new circular was agreed to be January 1, 2023, rather than June 1, 2023.

โ€œWe believe this error will be corrected without delay. The recent upward review of CONMESS did not take into consideration the consequences of the fuel subsidy removal and exponential inflation that has pervaded our socio-economic space in the past three months.

โ€œDespite our associationโ€™s decision to keep faith with the engagement and negotiations with the National Salaries Incomes and Wages Commission for more than two years regarding the correction of the shortfalls in remuneration for Clinical Lecturers (Honorary Consultants), the issue is yet to be conclusively addressed by the Federal Government,โ€ it noted.

The council said it observed the non-universal implementation of CONMESS for all medical and dental doctors irrespective of the agencies of the government they are working with.

The council decried the failure of the government to appreciate the magnitude of the impacts of brain drain in the health sector, as exhibited by the refusal of the National Council on Establishment to approve the Federal Ministry of Healthโ€™s proposal on the upward review of the age of retirement for the Medical and Dental Consultants and other health workers.

The council said the government has failed to resolve the ongoing disputes with the National Association of Residents Doctors and its attendant impacts on access to health care by Nigerians, and the kidnapping of doctors in the country.

The consultants are, however, demanding the immediate review of the newly revised CONMESS circular and issuance of a new circular that would reflect the agreed percentage on both the Basic Salary and other allowances, apart from hazard allowance.

According to them, the review will ensure that the clinical lecturers would benefit from the upward review.

Other demands include, โ€œA call for the correction of the error of commencement of the implementation of the upward review of CONMESS from June 1, 2023, to January 1, 2023.

โ€œThe upward review of the CONMESS should take into consideration the impacts of the fuel subsidy removal and the high inflationary trend that is currently being experienced. A demand for the immediate implementation and circularisation of the agreed modalities for correcting the shortfalls in remunerations of Clinical Lecturers (Honorary Consultants). An appeal for the universal applicability of CONMESS to all medical and dental doctors, particularly those in public universities.

โ€œThe attention of the government is once again called to the impact of brain drain in the health sector, which is contributing to burnout among our members and inadequate healthcare workforce to cater to the health of Nigerians. We, therefore, demand the immediate implementation of the upward review of age retirement to 70 years for Consultants and 65 years for other Health workers, as an immediate measure to bridge the ongoing massive brain drain.

โ€œWe appeal to the government to as a matter of urgency resolve all the contending issues with NARD, to ensure that the government hospitals return to normal operation for optimal healthcare delivery immediately. We call on the government at all levels, as well as the security agencies to do all within their powers, to ensure the safety of our members and other Nigerians while effecting the immediate and safe release of those currently held captive by kidnappers.

โ€œThe NEC hopes that all these issues will be satisfactorily resolved within the next 21 days, failing which it can no longer guarantee the present relative industrial harmony within the government hospitals and our medical schoolsโ€, it said.

On July 15, 2023, the virtual space was awash with the death of Mr Chima Anolue who allegedly was brutally murdered by โ€˜hisโ€™ house help the previous night. Divergent stories of the murder incident rented the social media space. While most of the stories were entirely false, some were quite distorted based on hearsay reports. The family who were still drowned in the rude shock of the gruelling murder of their son could not have narrated the true account of what transpired on the night of July 14, 2023.

The 35 years old Chima, until his death was a Technologist in the Department of Psychology, Unizik, a seasoned chorister/choirmaster in the Anglican Communion, and hailed from Igboukwu, Aguata Local Government area, Anambra state.

To put the records straight, Chimaโ€™s mother, Lady Dr. (Mrs.) Ifeyinwa Anolue, Secretary, College of Postgraduate Studies, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka (Unizik) recently summoned strength amidst tears and the excruciating pain of the gruesome killing of her last son by their house help, Ifesinachi Emmanuel Omeano.

๐๐€๐‚๐Š๐†๐‘๐Ž๐”๐๐ƒ
Dr. Anolueโ€™s story:
โ€œIfesinachi Emmanuel Omeano came to our house here on 2nd January 2020 courtesy of his uncle, who is the father of his cousin (Miracle) who had been living with us since 2009 and currently doing his clearance having concluded his degree programme here in Unizik. Since he would soon be going for his National Youth Service Corps programme, we requested a small boy to be assisting us. My husband, Sir Tim Anolue just clocked 78 in January.
โ€œWhen Ifesi came, he told us that he was 15 years old and had finished primary six in Ebonyi state, Ezilo precisely, their village, and set for JSS 1. I requested Daddy (Sir Tim Anolue) to test him as a retired teacher to know where the school will place him. Daddy gave him a simple mathematics test which he failed. Daddy took him to the school where he was tested for Primary 6 and 5, which he failed. They now said the alternative will be primary 4 since heโ€™s overgrown primary 3, yet he still failed primary 4. He pleaded that we change school for him which we obliged and sent him to Demonstration primary school Awka, where he schooled till primary 6.

๐’๐„๐‚๐Ž๐๐ƒ ๐‚๐‡๐€๐๐‚๐„
Dr Anolue continued, โ€œSometime in November 2021, we travelled to the village for burial. We were at home when one of our relations, Mr Ethel Umeanozie living at Igboukwu Street, called us that our ward and his accomplice were apprehended stealing rods for onward sale and that he was about to be lynched and set ablaze. Since we weren't close by, the information was relayed to Chima who was inside the University; he eventually rushed to the scene and rescued the boy after he had been thoroughly beaten by the security guards at the site.

โ€œOn coming back the same evening, Chima gave us a rundown of what had transpired. On querying why he engaged in such a crime, Ifesi confessed that they sell the rods and use the money to feed. I asked him, 'So you donโ€™t eat in this house that you go about stealing?' Daddy punished him that day and sent for his parents. The mother, the father, and one of their daughters came to the house and pleaded extensively on his behalf. By then, I had packed his bags, I beckoned on them to go with Ifesinachi. They fell, crying and pleading. The mother used reverse psychology while asking if I would throw my child away just like that pleading that we help make the boy a better person otherwise he would go astray if left in their custody. After many pleas, we then reconsidered giving him another chance as he promised to turn a new leaf. We had no issue with him all through 2022.

โ€œRecently in March this year, Ifesi exhibited another unruly behaviour by stealing and doing away with the earphone of one of my nephews that had come to spend time with us during the electioneering period. He repeatedly lied about stealing the accessory until much later when he confessed to selling it off. Chima said to us after that incident and coupled with what he heard when he (Ifesi) was almost lynched the previous time, and I quote, โ€˜Mummy, Daddy, send this boy back to his parents before he puts you into troubleโ€™. I had to repack his bags for him, gave him T-fare, and asked him to go back to his parents before I get back from work. On returning the same evening, Daddy showed me the undertaking Ifesi wrote, to be of good behaviour, stating that we should send him home if he tries it again. As considerate parents, we obliged and continued to have him live with us.

๐“๐‡๐„ ๐…๐€๐“๐„๐…๐”๐‹ ๐ƒ๐€๐˜
Narrating further, Dr Anolue disclosed, โ€œWe had planned to go for burial in Igboukwu on Thursday to return on Saturday. Ifesi said he had exams from Monday to Friday. When I wanted to provide him w8ith a foolscap sheet for the exams, he said it was strictly a โ€˜fill in the gapโ€™ format. I pleaded with Chinenye, a cousin to our second sonโ€™s wife, who was doing her clearance at the university to come stay in the house since we canโ€™t leave Ifesi all alone in the house. On that Thursday morning, Chima saw us off and bade us farewell, little did we know that will be the last time we would behold our son. Then Friday night around 7, I called Chinenye to check up on them and asked her if brother Chima was back of which she said no. I told her to lock the gate and open it when Chima knocks; she quickly informed me that she had already locked it pending when he comes back.

โ€œAfter the call, I equally spoke with two of my sisters who had called. One even asked when Chima is settling down of which I told her we were on it. My daughter also called afterwards. Shortly before we prayed in the house, my second son called and said there was a crisis in Awka and I immediately asked what Ifesi has done again. He asked us to start praying as the news he got from Awka was that Chima is in critical condition and has been rushed to the hospital. He said that he was told that Chima hit his head at the edge of our freezer. I started calling for a prayer chain with our prayer partners in the church and fellowship.

โ€œI quickly called Chinenye to enquire what happened. She said when Chima came in, he enquired what they had for dinner of which she responded to having had spaghetti with Ifesi, after which he admitted clearing the sink. According to her, Chima, however, said heโ€™d love to eat rice and will fix the food himself, hence she went upstairs.

โ€œAround 8 pm, Chinenye said she started hearing a sound that seemed like someone killing a rat. She rhetorically asked what Ifesi could be killing. Hence, she had to go downstairs to see for herself. At first, she called for Ifesinachi but no response only to meet Chima face down in the pool of his blood in the kitchen. She dashed to our neighbourโ€™s flat and called on him that something had happened to Chima. So Frank and his two brothers rushed to our kitchen to meet our son in his pool of blood. Frank rushed back to get his car key. It was at that period that Ifesi surfaced and said Chima had fallen and hit his head on the freezer. The good thing was that the gates were locked, maybe he would have run away. Chinenye said the three boys managed to carry Chima to Frankโ€™s car to rush him to the hospital.
Chinenye revealed that while in transit, Ifesi was seen holding Chimaโ€™s neck. One of the boys now scolded him, 'What are you doing Ifesinachi, do you want to strangle him?' Chima was still breathing at that time, according to Chinenye. They took him to the first hospital, and they rejected him. Then, they left for Amaku Hospital where he was accepted and treatment commenced. In the course of treatment, the doctor was puzzled at the degree of injury and summoned the occupants of the house. Ifesinachi pointed accusing fingers at Chinenye and Frankโ€™s brothers; the Amaku security men quickly made to handcuff them. At this point, Frank came in and interjected, stating that it was Chinenye that came and called him and his brothers over to their house.

โ€œThe doctor went back in with the security personnel and came up with a psychological ploy. The doctor demanded to know who Ifesi was, stating that Chima mentioned the name as the culprit. It was at that point that Ifesi owned up to his crime and started confessing. By then, Venerable Ekene had arrived at the hospital. He was later whisked to the police station.

โ€œWe didnโ€™t sleep that night as we started packing. At 6 am, we set for Awka. On arrival, Daddy suggested we get to the house first. Getting to our gate, we met a lot of people who had initially wanted to deny us entrance to our house but Daddy ordered them to allow us in. I knew it was all over when I saw Chinenye in the house because we told her not to leave the hospital till we get there. I quickly dashed upstairs to ease myself, after which I managed to enter my kitchen. I stepped out and told Daddy that Chima is no more. He asked why I said so, 'I told him our son is no more going by what I saw in the kitchen, that Chima will not survive it'.

โ€œWe immediately left for Amaku. Come and see people, UNIZIK staff, Church of Pentecost members, the Igboukwu community, friends and all the doctors we know. Immediately we entered the premises, they took us to run a BP check and gave us some drugs. They poured water on me seeing that I was gradually passing out. I pleaded for them to take me to see my son as his siblings had requested a video of their brother. The doctors held me and my husband very well and took us to where a son I left here in good health lay in his pool of blood. My husband and I prayed for him. We said, โ€˜Chima, this was not what we planned but since it happened and we stood in the gap for you, may Godโ€™s will prevail. My happiness is that you served your God with your talent, money, and time, that is my consolation but we will see on the resurrection day. After praying for him, we pleaded with the mortician to take good care of his body.

โ€œBefore we got home, everywhere was swarming with people, cars, etc. I didnโ€™t even know that my small boy was this popular. Ever since weโ€™ve been perching here (referring to a particular shade in the compound), we canโ€™t sleep again because my house is now like ice water. Chima would come home, singing from his room downstairs to upstairs to greet us. Chima will gist us the activities of the day from the University to the church and back home. My pain was that Chima did not even eat the rice he set out to prepare as I saw the ofeakwu that was brought out. Chima died hungry after the whole hustle and bustle in school. It is just disheartening that the boy we brought here to better his life killed my son.

โ€œThe following day, we were asked to come to the police station for a statement. Getting there, I requested to see Ifesi to know why he killed my son in such a gruesome manner.

Immediately he saw me, he said, โ€˜Mummy, I donโ€™t know what came over meโ€™. I replied, โ€˜Ifesi wait, if you tell me the truth, I will forgive you, but if you lie, I will leave you to Godโ€™. He continued, โ€˜Mummy, what happened was that when Chima came home, he told me to boil rice for meโ€™. I quickly retorted, โ€˜That is a lie! Chima cannot tell you to boil rice. Have you ever cooked for Chima since you came to our house?โ€™ He said, โ€˜No mummyโ€™. โ€˜The only thing connecting Chima and you which is just on rare occasions when Chima sends you to buy Coke across the street. How can Chima tell you to cook when Chinenye was in the house?โ€™

โ€œContinuing, he said brother Chima asked why he hadnโ€™t washed the plate on the sink which apparently he (Ifesi) ate with, and he didnโ€™t say a word. Chima asked further, and yet, he didnโ€™t answer the question, so he slapped him. He told Brother Chima that they donโ€™t slap him because he has an injury. I inquired to know what happened afterwards. He said they started fighting. I told him that it was a lie, โ€˜You canโ€™t fight Chima, and you canโ€™t even challenge him or lift a fingerโ€™. He then said he hit Brother Chima with the pestle when he was about to leave the kitchen, and still hit him again afterwards. I broke out in tears again as I left the station.

โ€œI want to make it clear that Chima has never touched this boy, you can ask Miracle at my back. We gave all my children a standing instruction not to touch anybody living with us. I told Ifesi, โ€˜If Chima had slapped you, why not you endure and tell us when we return and you see us dig it with himโ€™. The last time Chima sent him to buy something across the street around 6 pm, I emphatically told Chima not to send him out once it was 5:30 pm. If you see how we were pampering this boy, training him godly and academically just like his cousin, now look at how we were paid back. Our solace is that our son died in the Lord but my pains are that our son suffered before he died, he died without eatingโ€.
