How Aviation Architecture is driving the Growth of African Economy through Collaboration

Aviation architecture is not just like the regular architectural design approaches in the built environment, it’s the kind of conceptual designs that architects must ensure it encompasses a multifaceted approach that blends artistic vision with precise engineering principles to create exceptional immersive aviation experiences that elevate the industry and thus impact economic growth through airfield spaces like airports, hangers etc.

With the aim to rival Addis Ababa Bole International Airport while creating a huge valuable opportunities and economic growth in the continent of Africa through an essential international collaboration, Rwanda in partnership with Qatar Airways is currently constructing a new International Airport that redefine aviation architecture in the continent, approximately 23 KMs South-East of Kigali City. Upon completion, which is suggested to be in 2028, the international hub will become the largest in East Africa, by serving a leading transit hub providing services to an annual capacity of over 14 Million Passengers.

THE BIGGER PICTURE IN BRIEF

RwandAir CEO Yvonne Manzi Makolo said in May during a press brief in Doha that Addis Ababa which is the capital of Ethiopia already has a huge hub but Kigali’s new hub will become an alternative regional hub in Africa based on Rwanda’s geographical position.

Taking a stake in the international airport project which is valued at $1.3bn through a code-sharing agreement is part of the Qatari flag carrier plans to cement its expansion interests on the continent of Africa. With construction by Mota-Engil, currently on going on the project in Kigali that will give access to all points and meet the current high demand of aircraft services in Africa, the Qatar Airways’ 60 percent stake in the project is a valuable investment that can drive essential economic growth in Africa through an impactful international collaboration in the continent’s aviation sector.

More details including the current construction stage of the project to be published on our website soon.

Nautilus Bioarchitecture for the Future Envisioned by Manas Bhatia

Images by Ar. Manas Bhatia

Is AI really the future of the design sector? The way Artificial Intelligence AI is influencing architecture, the whole design sector and what the future holds is incredible, based on what has been achieved so far through the technology both in concept and in reality in the global stage that have proven the ability of AI to create something unimaginable with architectural affluence. As it has been described in these exclusive examples of the golden ratio that abounds in architectural masterpieces throughout history, like from the Parthenon in Athens to the pyramids of Giza etc. and now its influence has extended beyond the ideology of human construction.

In this exclusive design of floating cityscape based on historic mathematical principles, Manas Bhatia envisions a futuristic cityscape where floating skyscrapers unravel like Nautilus shells, harnessing the timeless beauty of the golden ratio. Visualised by AI tools like Midjourney, LookX, and ChatGPT, the structures of the Nautilus Bioarchitecture series are wrapped with landscaped gardens and terraces, creating a verdant oasis amidst the vast expanse of the ocean.

Unique spiral physical nature informed the project’s idea of Fibonacci sequence, with a sense of harmony and proportion that transcends mere functionality with optimized spatial layouts and improved structural stability. The architect thought it is very significant to look into the past, where the combination of maths and architecture has delivered some of the most iconic and lasting creations in the history of humanity, to shape the architecture of tomorrow with a more harmonious and sustainable built environment according to Designbomm.

Celebrate it.

Architecture for Fashion that Redefines Visual Identity in Aesthetics Way

Project photographer: Nikita Subbotin, Landon Studio

We celebrate this exclusive Ekonika footwear brand interior design which is inspired by the rebranding of the company’s footwear and accessories chain. One of the world’s most renowned architectural firms Da Bureau developed a new visual concept for Ekonika footwear showrooms, which incorporates the company’s paradigm idea of a modern identity that’s aimed at a younger audience.

In defining the visual identity of the store, the inventive design idea for the project was informed by two central themes which are: the Mediterranean and antiquity, and industrial aesthetics. These were integrated to create a balanced environment that embodies both natural tactility and contemporary industrial elements according to Designboom. Da Bureau used white stone blocks reminiscent of marble quarries, which are also featured in the company’s flagship store inside Afimall City Shopping Center in Moscow, Russia is the Mediterranean influence. Placed as the pivot of the space, the stone elements add complexity and depth to the layout as it plays a vital role in defining the visual identity of the showroom.

In order to communicate the visual identity of Ekonika stores anywhere, with flagship locations featuring complex accent pieces, consistency and unique expression, and to guide customers to experience the precision and organization of the store’s functional aspects, by creating a transparent and engaging shopping environment, the design team introduced industrial aesthetic through the exposure of structural storage systems typically hidden from view. And for flexible product placement that draws attention to trendy models while maintaining a visual rhythm that is easy on the eye, the architects also included a new display system that emphasizes a clean, light-filled environment.

The Elegance of Olive City Private Residence Interior by Fu Xia

Project Photographer: Hu Xueman

Just like other exclusive projects that owner Lisa has worked on with the interior designer Fu Xia, Chief Designer at Shangceng Design Institute China. As related to renovating this 250m² luxury apartment built on the land area of 320m², located in Chaoyang District, Beijing, China. Compared to the formal French style of Lisa’s previous home, designer Fu Xia hoped to infuse more relaxation into the space this time, creating a sense of effortless elegance within the refined urban lifestyle.

Making natural and identical reference to traditional luxury apartments, this renovation breaks away from the fixed layout of a standard flat by reorganizing the space. In the original structure, a long corridor separated the living area from the functional areas, making the space narrow and lacking in natural light. Fu Xia merged two smaller rooms to create a piano room for the daughter. This open space meets the emotional needs of the family of three to spend time together and significantly increases the natural light, making the living environment more comfortable.

With the aim of creating an oversized kitchen with dual-sided natural light the designer merged another three small bedrooms into one. This new layout was achieved not only to accommodate both Western and Chinese cooking functions but also to achieve a north-south cross-ventilation in the apartment.

Fu Xia Design Studio (sub-division of Shangceng Design Institute) led by Chief Designer Fu Xia is a professional team with extensive experience, dedicated to creating bespoke spaces for China's elite. With a spirit of exploration and a passion for design and creativity, they approach each project with an open mind and a constant willingness to learn, realizing dreams that are born from anticipation.

We celebrate with MAD Architects on the completion of One River North One River North which is the firm’s latest residential tower with a ‘cracked-open canyon’ façade in Denver, Colorado. The sixteen-storey glass façade building which we described as ’The MAD Crack’, cut open vertically and horizontally through the high-rise building with a sculptural crevice that reflects a blend of urban development and natural landscape, redefining mixed-use architecture in the heart of the beautiful city. The project which is just completed for the client and owners; The Max Collaborative, Uplands Real Estate Partners and Zakhem Real Estate Group was conceived to offer its future residents exclusive experience of living in a natural landscape that’s inspired by Colorado’s rugged mountain terrain.

Aviation Architecture: World's Largest Mass Timber Airport by ZGF Architects

Project photographer: Ema Peter Photography, Dror Baldinger

As I have said in my past posts, wood is a wonderful tool in architecture creations. The magic of wood done by architects around the world can be described to be crazy in an inventive manner. Building with wood can be creative, innovative and inspirational based on the fact that wooden structures have a unique ability to blend seamlessly with nature while offering strength, durability, and appealing aesthetically. An architect can demonstrate his / her inventive design thinking ability by creating and developing residential and commercial strong wood buildings that can adhere to the most rigorous energy efficiency, quality and aesthetic standard. Wood enables architects globally to embrace their creativity and design.

In creating something spectacular by using wood to achieve uncommon inventive monumental building structures in the global building sector, ZGF Architects designed the Portland International Airport (PDX) which was recently opened to the public. The $2 billion renovation project which is a significant milestone for the Port of Portland Port of Portland is an expanded main terminal of mass timber that’s created for travelers' comfort. The expansion increased the airport in double capacity which will enable it to accommodate more than 35 million passengers annually in 2045. The exclusive mass timber airport project is said to be the current largest of its kind in the world.

In order to create an environment that resonates with the region’s unique character, the project portrays the natural beauty of the Pacific Northwest, as the exclusive terminal’s 9-acre mass timber roof ignites a unique experience of walking through a forest, with expansive views of the natural airfield and surrounding landscapes with interior spaces that induces natural light and greenery,

Aesthetic Architecture for Culture by Perkins&Will

Project Photographer: Zhu Yumeng ()

In designing a world class cultural center as a structure or any other purposeful building in an inventive manner that can attract people and make them feel emotionally connected and comfortable in their surroundings, which can also lead to increase in social standard, architects need to understand the importance of aesthetics. Because aesthetic value is a crucial consideration in design thinking for several reasons, like; the importance of cultural and historical value, emotional and psychological impact, urban design and placemaking, sustainability and environmental considerations, economic and commercial value etc.

Because Perkins&Will and Schmidt Hammer Lassen Architects understands this philosophy, in creating the aesthetic value of architecture that is essential to evoke emotional responses and preserve cultural identity that can shape the urban landscape and generate economic value, they conceive this world class cultural center known as the Beijing Performing Arts Centre. A new cultural complex in the historic Tongzhou Port on the Grand Canal and the eastern gateway to the city.

Perkins&Will and Schmidt Hammer Lassen Architects in collaboration with SLA conceived the exclusive design concept that anchors Tongzhou’s recently designated cultural district, a collection of major civic projects that also includes a museum, a library, and extensive parklands according to Designboom. The aesthetic cultural architecture project which appears to be covered with some kind of theater curtain façade from the top consists of three world-class venues; an opera house, a theater, and a concert hall as well as a multipurpose hall and an outdoor stage, the theater curtain like aluminum-clad complex will host hundreds of performances each year, everything from traditional Chinese and Western operas to orchestral performances, stage dramas, and dances. The Beijing Performing Arts Centre, a project for China National Centre for the Performing Arts was designed to cultivate community while promoting the health and well-being of visitors and the environment.

‘We have always referred to this project as the containers for culture,’ said Perkins&Will lead architect Chris Hardie.
