EXPLORING BENUE PART 6
THE IGEDE PEOPLE OF BENUE STATE.
The origin of the Igede people of Benue State is somehow conflicting as it could be to any other tribe. It's quite often other historian tried vainly to prove that the Igede people are just a dialect of Idoma, the claim which is being refuted firmly and consdered by Ai' Igede as an attempt to denigrate their identity. While others believe that the Igede tribe are migrants from the Ogoja province in Cross River state; others argue that their origin could be traced to Sabon Gidan Ora in the present day Edo State.
According to history as researched by Benue Newspoint, There was a great warrior from Owan community in the great Benin Empire whose name was Agba. Agba was an Ora man from the Ohia clan. Ohia was regarded as the most senior clan of Ora clan. The man Agba being the leader of Ohia clan, made a serious case for himself and Ohia people to be the Ruling house of the entire Oras and rejected rotational arrangement because Ohia was senior clan in Ora. The entire Ora community ( minus Ohia) led by Evbiobe rejected this proposal and to finally stifle future claims like this from Ohia people, they banished the leader of the Ohia people which was Agba. Agba journeyed far to Benue state through Nsukka in Enugu state where he founded the Igede Kingdom covering the present day Oju and Obi Local Government Areas in Benue State. . This historical event in Igede history is commonly recounted in song and drama, for instance the record and drama piece "Ego ny'Igede".
