… Monarch Files Appeal to Set Aside Deposition
After a Kogi State High Court declared the banishment of HRH. Dr. Samuel Adai Onimisi by former Governor Yahaya Bello illegal and unconstitutional, the deposed Obobanyi of Ihima has proceeded to the Appeal Court to set aside his deposition.
Recall that Dr. Onimisi was one of the three traditional rulers deposed by the immediate past Governor barely two weeks to the expiration of his tenure. Others who were dethroned and banished to Niger state were the Ohimege Igu of Kotonkarfe, HRH Abdulrazaq Isah Koto; and the Olu Magongo, Sambola Ojoaha.
In a recent development, a Kogi State High Court sitting in Lokoja declared the provision of Section 13(1) of Kogi State Chiefs Law, which empowers the Governor of Kogi State to banish a Traditional Ruler, as unconstitutional, null and void, to the extent of its inconsistency with the Nigerian Constitution.
The Court further declared that the banishment of Dr. Onimisi was null and void with no effect.
Dissatisfied, nonetheless, with the Court’s decline to set aside his deposition, the First Class Traditional Ruler has instructed his lawyers to file an appeal against the court’s decline.
Leading his team, Chief Joe-Kyari Gadzama, SAN has filed a Notice of Appeal and a Motion for Stay of Ex*****on as well as Injunction Pending Appeal; particularly to challenge the Order of Court refusing to set aside the deposition of HRH Dr. Samuel Adai Onimisi .

An official of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) on Friday sustained serious injuries when he was shot severally by gunmen suspected to be armed robbers in Lokoja, Kogi State.
The officer identified as Abu, was shot by the armed robbers who attempted to sn**ch a bag containing money from him.
He was returning to his house in the Zango area of Lokoja, when the armed robbers operating in a ash colour Toyota Camry car accosted him.
Abu who was riding a motorcycle was believed to have been trailed by the armed robbers right from the bank where he went to make transaction.
However, the armed robbers numbering four were able to close up on him in front of Lokongoma market.
The armed robbers stopped him in front of the market and started dragging the bag containing the money with him.

As Yahoo Boys Take Over Hotels

Parents of Yahoo Boys should be arrested instead of hoteliers – University Don.
By Abdul Aji.
Recently, Kogi State Government threatened to demolish houses occupied by internet fraudsters, popularly known as Yahoo boys in the state.
The State Security Adviser, retired Commander, Jerry Omodara who gave the warning when he appeared on “State of Kogi” a Radio Kogi Audience Participatory programme, however, said the government needed the assistance of the public in the area of provision of information to arrest internet fraudsters in the state.

He said security agencies will soon go after hotels used by yahoo boys to perpetrate crime. ”It should be noted that appropriate sanctions will be handed to those harbouring the fraudsters”. He cautioned landlords against giving their houses to “Yahoo Boys”, pointing out that such structures will also be pulled down.
Kogi State government in partnership with security agencies have identified houses built with proceeds of criminal activities and those housing men of the underworld would soon be demolished. Security Agencies and local hunters have been directed to arrest or gun down anyone carrying arms in the forest.

It is a well-known fact that the activities of internet fraudsters in Kogi State and other parts of the country has been on the rise, prompting the Economic and Financial Crime Commission, EFCC, to arrest many earlier this year.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) earlier warned hoteliers who allow Yahoo Boys to check into their facilities risk being prosecuted and jailed. In a statement on its official page, the anti-graft agency said hoteliers could bag a jail term.

Group Knocks Kogi NMA Chairman Over Attempt To Cause Crisis In Federal Teaching Hospital Lokoja

A group under the auspices of Concerned Lokoja Community Leaders has berated the Kogi State Chairman, Nigeria Medical Association (NMA), Dr Olusola Baoku for his poor leadership role in the tussle between the Association of Resident Doctors (ARD) and the management of Federal Teaching Hospital Lokoja (FTHL) which has led him into allegedly forging documents to implicate the Chief Medical Director of the hospital, Dr Olatunde Alabi.
The group, in a statement signed by its spokesperson, Paul Olagoke on Monday carpeted the Kogi NMA Chairman for using the medical body to cause crisis aimed at shutting down the hospital.
Olagoke lamented that Dr Baoku Olusola has turned NMA to a “One Man Mopol”, noting that the group has heard how he has relegated other members of the executive to the background for his own selfish interest.
He explained that the embattled Chairman is bringing the entire association into disrepute by desperate measures to bring crisis to Federal Teaching Hospital Lokoja in the guise of protecting the interest of the doctors.

Kogi Guber: Ajaka Appeals Tribunal Judgment, Insists on Stolen Mandate

The governorship candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in the November 11, 2023, Kogi State governorship election, Murtala Ajaka, and his party have gone to the Court of Appeal, Abuja to challenge the judgement of the State Election Petition Tribunal, which affirmed Ahmed Usman Ododo of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the elected governor of the state. In the record compiled and transmitted to the appellate court through his lawyer, Pius Akubo (SAN), on June 14, the appellants said the judgement of the Tribunal, which affirmed Ododo’s election, was a serious miscarriage of justice.
Ajaka and his party, in the appeal, hinged on 31 grounds, insisting that they are the winners of the November 11, 2023, governorship election and should be declared the rightful winners.
The appellants, who are dissatisfied with the decision of the Kogi State Election Petition Tribunal headed by Hon. Justice Ado Yusuf Birnin Kudu, are praying to the court for an order setting aside the judgement of the Tribunal, an order restoring the testimony of their first witness (PW1) as well as all the documents they tendered but expunged from the records of the Tribunal.
The appellants also want the Appeal Court to hold that Ododo was not even qualified to have contested the election into the office of Governor of Kogi State and that all votes ascribed and/or allocated to him and the APC are wasted votes.
“An order granting the reliefs sought by the appellants in the petition and thereupon declaring him (the 1st Appellant) as the duly elected governor of Kogi State.”
It would be recalled that shortly after the judgement of the Tribunal delivered on May 27, 2024, Ajaka said that the long walk to freedom in Kogi State had just begun.
He maintained that throughout the entire process, their team of lawyers exhibited the highest level of professionalism and tenacity, adding that, “They meticulously gathered evidence, scrutinised data, and presented a compelling case to the Tribunal.”
Unfortunately, the Tribunal, despite agreeing to the embarrassing over-voting and rigging exercise, struck our case out. I can assure you that this judgement will not stand the test of time. Yes, we may have lost the battle at the Tribunal, but the war is far from over. Our stolen mandate and our voice will not be silenced.
“We will reclaim our stolen mandate and restore the faith of our people in the democratic process,” he said.

The Ohinoyi of Ebira, His Royal Majesty Alhaji (Dr.) Ahmed Tijani Muhammed Anaje, paid a courtesy visit to the Sultan of Sokoto, His Eminence Alhaji (Dr.) Muhammad Sa'ad Abubakar III, CFR, MNI, on May 29, 2024, to formally familiarize and strengthen the historical ties between the two royal kingdoms.

During the two-day visit, the Ohinoyi was accompanied by a high powered delegation of prominent individuals, including four Ohis; two Daudus; Representatives of Jama'atu Nasrul Islam; and the Leadership of Ebira Community in Sokoto.

The Sultan warmly received the Ohinoyi and his entourage, and the two rulers engaged in fruitful discussions on security, economic development, and the revitalization of the Ajaokuta Steel Company and Itakpe Iron Ore Mining Company.

The Ohinoyi commended the Sultan's leadership in promoting unity and peace. The Sultan in turn, congratulated his Royal August Guest on his ascension to the historic throne of Ebiraland.

Both Rulers harped on the importance of traditional institutions in nation-building and security.

The paramount ruler of Ebira Kingdom emphasized that reviving our mineral resources is imperative now more than ever, given the precarious state of our economy and the urgent need to harness our natural resources to stimulate economic growth. He also stressed that traditional institutions should be granted constitutional roles and integrated into the efforts to address security challenges, leveraging their intimate knowledge of the local environment and their unique perspective to enhance the effectiveness of these efforts.

The Sultan while responding, quoted the Federal Government as saying that they are committed to allocating resources to revive the long-abandoned Ajaokuta Steel Company and Itakpe Iron Ore Mining Company, with the goal of transforming the area into a thriving hub of employment opportunities and commercial activity, driving sustainable economic growth for both the state and the nation.

The Sultan fondly recalls his longstanding connections with several distinguished individuals in Ebira Land, including Ohinoyi, with whom he shared a close relationship during his military days; and Daudu Alhaji Isah Ozi Salami, with whom he enjoyed a warm and cordial friendship during their time together at Barewa College, cherishing the memories of their time spent together.

Routined in the Ohinoyi's visit was the tour of the palace, museum, and archives, showcasing the rich history and cultural heritage of the Sokoto Caliphate.

This historic visit marked the beginning of a new chapter in the relations between the Ebira Kingdom and the Sokoto Caliphate, fostering greater collaboration and mutual understanding.

Senator Natasha Visits CUSTECH, Pledges Support

The lawmaker representing Kogi Central senatorial district, Senator Natasha H Akpoti -Uduaghan, on Friday, visited Confluence University of Science and Technology (CUSTECH) Osara to express her sympathies to the school management and offer her support following the recent attack by kidnappers.

The lawmaker said it was unfortunate that her first visit to the university had to address the tragic situation.

"What has befallen CUSTECH few weeks ago is what has happened to many institutions in Nigeria, and it's quite worrisome. No child should fear for their safety in a place of learning; educational institutions should be the safest places," she said.

The Senator pledged her readiness to support the university in any way possible to tackle the insecurity and to complement the measures already in place.

She asked the University Vice Chancellor to write to her about any area where she could support the school.

"Education is something I value dearly, and many of my 2024 constituency projects focus on strengthening our educational institutions. We have already included Federal College of Education, Okene, Abdul Aziz Atta Memorial College, Okene, and Government Technical College, Oboroke in our pilot projects, and we can replicate the same thing here.

"I hope we will all come together, irrespective of political affiliation, and work for the good of Kogi State and Nigeria. My doors are open to everyone, regardless of political differences. I sympathize with you and hope no student will ever suffer this again," she added.

Reacting, the Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor Abdulrahman Salawu, said the University management was pleased to welcome her to the university to commiserate with the institution.

The Vice Chancellor noted that the time of politics has passed, and it is now time for governance and collaboration.

Kogi Residents Express Mixed Feelings Over President Tinubu’s First Year In Office

By Stephen Adeleye.
Some residents of Lokoja, Kogi State, have expressed mixed reactions over the achievements and lapses of President Bola Tinubu’s first year in office.
The respondents, who spoke in separate interviews with the News of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday, commended Tinubu’s performances in the areas of security, health and education.

They, however, expressed dissatisfaction on most of the president’s policies on the economy, especially without the perceived due consultation with the relevant stakeholders.

Mr Opaluwa Eleojo, the Vice Chairman, Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Kogi council, commended Tinubu for the massive road projects going on across the country.
Eleojo noted that there had been a relative improvement in security all over the country, compared to what was obtainable in the past.

“There was also an increase in revenue to states to cushion the effect of fuel subsidy removal.
“Unfortunately, most state governors diverted it from the purpose intended.

Kogi to Sanction Principals Charging Fees in Public Schools

The Kogi State Government has vowed to sanction secondary school principals or head teachers of public primary schools who sabotage its free education policy.
The government position was made known by the state Commissioner for Education, Wemi Jones.
Mr Jones gave the warning on Monday at the 2024 Children’s Day celebration held at Muhammad Buhari Square, Lokoja.
Mr Jones emphasised that public schools remained tuition free, saying “any principal or head teacher who smuggles fees into the system does so at his or her peril.”
The commissioner warned that erring officials would be severely punished and advised parents and students to report erring officials to the authorities.
He stressed that the government had prioritised education and given the needed attention to its functional growth.
Mr Jones maintained that since the assumption of office of the immediate past and present administrations, education had been at the front burner of its thematic areas of concentration.
He noted that the administration had successfully enacted education law which exempted students and pupils from payment of both internal and external examinations.
