A Lady identified as Anita Ofili, who was arrested for k!lling her friend, Glory Okon in her apartment at Greenville Estate, Ajah area of Lagos, has disclosed that she waited for 10 years to have her revenge.

According to Vanguard, Anita said that she committed the act because the deceased snatched her boyfriend about 10 years ago. Occupants of the building were alerted by a shout for help from Ofili’s one-room self-contain apartment at 1.20p.m., on Sunday March 26. They reportedly forced the door open, only to discover Ofili thrusting a kitchen kn!fe into Okon’s neck.

Unfortunately, the victim, who was rushed to the General Hospital on Lagos Island, was confirmed d3ad, after she had lost so much bl00d.

One of the tenants of the building, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said;

“The landlord’s daughter was the one that heard the scream. She peeped through the window and saw a masked person st@bbing a lady. She rushed and called her father, who alerted other tenants that forced the door open, only to discover that the masked person was Anita Ofili. The whole room was filled with bl00d. We discovered that the victim was still breathing. We had to tie Ofili’s legs and hands to prevent her from escaping. Before the arrival of the Police, Ofili did not show any sign of remorse. She said she would explain to the Police what happened. She claimed the lady in question was her friend and that her action was in revenge for what her friend did to her.”

It was gathered that the suspect and the deceased had been friends for close to two decades and had attended the same tertiary institution. They were said to have had a misunderstanding that tore them part for close to 10 years before they reconciled two weeks ago.

Explaining why she committed the act, Ofili said;

“Glory and I had been good friends for years, but she betrayed that friendship by snatching my boyfriend.''

Confirming the incident, the spokesperson of the Lagos State Police command, SP Benjamin Hundeyin said;

“At 5.50p.m., on March 26, a resident of Greenville Estate came to the station to report that he heard someone screaming from the room of one.

I told Obi three times that Obidients would cost him election – Wole Soyinka

Prof. Wole Soyinka, said he warned the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, LP, Peter Obi on excesses of the his supporters, known as "Obidients."

Soyinka stated this in a statement titled, “Media responsibility,’’ on Tuesday, April 4.

Soyinka explained that he was misrepresented in the reportage of a Channels Television interview he granted recently, rendering his remarks completely unrecognisable.

Soyinka said: "What I have read – at least, thus far – this morning, extracted from a one-and-a-half long interview, conducted a week ago with Channels Television, brings once more to the fore, the critical responsibility of the media in transmitting the spoken, even recorded – word to the public.

“This is especially crucial in a time of civic uncertainty. When remarks are taken out of context, spliced into a new one, provided a sensational headline, distortions become stamped on public receptivity, and the central intent of one’s remarks becomes completely unrecognisable.

“I denounced the menacing utterances of a vice-presidential aspirant as unbecoming. It was a gladiatorial challenge directed at the judiciary and, by implication, the rest of the democratic polity. But what on earth has happened to my even more urgent condemnation of the physical violence inflicted on those designated “strangers” in Lagos in the lead up to, and during governorship elections?

“This prejudicial selectivity is a betrayal of trust, and I find it contemptuous of public deserving. My critique of incipient fascism in the movement remains grounded in indisputable evidence,” Soyinka said.

The Nobel laureate stated that throughout the interview, he continued to stress that the final word had yet to be pronounced on the elections – “that omission renders the full message tendentious!”

He continued: “My rejection of fascism is nothing new.

"On three occasions, I was able to send a message to Peter Obi that if he lost the election, it would be his followers who lost it for him. It was depressing to watch his lieutenant, a crucially positioned voice of a movement that has ‘broken the mould'."

A teaching assistant in the United Kingdom has been jailed after he sent teenagers at the school where he worked a ‘s€x questionnaire’ asking their bra sizes and whether they were virgins.

Kevin Doxey, who worked at Anthony Gell School in Wirksworth, Derbyshire, admitted four counts of engaging in s€xual communication with a child at Derby Crown Court.

The 27-year-old had sent a picture of his ge****ls to one of the victims, alongside a winking emoji and message saying ‘I wish you were here’.

One of his victims told her parents about what he had sent her and they contacted the police, which led them to seize his phone and found more messages to other young girls.

Laura Blackband, prosecuting lawyer, said: ‘He obtained the Snapchat details of four girls who were all students at the school and sent a series of s€xually charged messages to each of them.

‘The communication included a “s*x questionnaire” which had a huge number of questions on them which we say could have led to possible s*xual activity.

‘[Victim one] was 15 and she was very distressed by the questions. He would ask her to pick a number and would get her to answer the questions.

‘She initially said no but when she was on a sleepover he texted her a [s*xually explicit] photograph of himself with a winking emoji and three kisses.

‘She showed it to one of her friends and she said, “You need to tell someone about it.”‘

The state’s Hisbah commandant, Ibrahim Dahiru, who stated this in an interview on Tuesday, April 4, 2023, said the move is part of the corps’ efforts to stem social vices during Ramadan.

Dahiru explained that the Hisbah corps has conducted sensitization for commercial s*x workers and alcohol sellers.

"We have gone round to such areas across the state and warned the perpetrators of the offences to quit their illegitimate businesses during this holy month of Ramadan or leave the state.”

The Hisbah commandant declared that operatives would embark on general patrol to arrest those who ignored the order.

Nobel laureate, Wole Soyinka has said the 2023 elections in Nigeria "broke his trust"

Stating that he was out of the country for some months, Soyinka said the elections was “not exactly the most edifying exercise that we’ve been through.”

“On arriving, I came in for the World Poetry Day, and immediately, I was bombarded by the most horrendous narratives both pre and after the elections,” he said to Channels TV on Monday, April 3.

“Since then, I’ve also read columns; I’ve seen Nigerian papers for the first time in months and I didn’t like what I read at all.

“My trust has broken down completely and even the minimum restraint that we’ve learnt to expect from seasoned politicians have been jettisoned completely.”

He said the existing mould was going to be broken.

“And the signs were there that there would be die-hard opposition to the breaking of that mould,” he said. “Elections should be keenly contested. But I still believe very much in what I call the Fashola Dictum., referring to former Lagos Governor Babatunde Fashola, once saying elections should be like festivals.

“They should be yet another aspect of the festive spirit of humanity – and this was anything but festive,” he said.

While there's little evidence available to the police to arrest DJ Brownskin, I think the police should at least invite him for questioning. During the questioning, the police could find some inconsistencies to officially initiate an investigation into the su***de.

INEC has denied us certified result copies – Imo LP candidates

The 27 House of Assembly candidates of the Labour Party, Imo State have raised the alarm over the refusal of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC to issue them the certified true copies of election results.

The candidates said INEC’s action has impeded them from completing the filing of their tribunal processes.

Speaking on behalf of the candidates, in a press conference in Owerri, Sunday, candidate of the party for Orlu State Constituency, Comrade Precious Nwadike, stated that INEC’s act is a deliberate attempt to frustrate them from filing processes at the tribunal.

He added that INEC had withheld the certified true copies of the results despite a court injunction mandating the commission to release the documents.

The candidates urged the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) of the state to retrace her steps, maintaining that they will employ all legal means to reclaim their mandate.

The flag bearers submitted that the REC allowed herself to be used by desperate politicians to subvert the will of the people and called for her removal.

The candidates said the February 18 polls were characterised by rigging, intimidation and harassment of their agents and voters.

According to them, results were manufactured in areas election did not hold and INEC accepted the results.

Chinese loans rise by 209% under Buhari, hit $4bn

Federal Government’s borrowing from China has grown by 209.15 per cent under the Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) administration.

This is as total bilateral loans rose by 219.91 per cent from $1.58bn as of June 2015 to $5.07bn as of December 2022. Total borrowing from China rose from $1.39bn to $4.29bn in the period under review.

Available data from the Debt Management Office revealed that Chinese loans make up 84.73 per cent of the total amount Nigeria owes to other countries of the world. The remaining 15.27 per cent is spread across France, Japan, India, and Germany.

According to the DMO, loans from China are concessional loans with interest rates of 2.50 per cent per annum, have a tenor of 20 years, and grace period (moratorium) of seven years.

As of September 30, 2021, the DMO listed 15 projects there were being funded with Chinese loans in a document titled, ‘Status of Chinese loans as at September 30, 2021.’

The more listed loans include the Nigerian 40 Parboiled Rice Processing Plants Project (Fed. Min. of Agric & Rural Dev.), Nigerian Railway Mordernisation Project (Lagos – Ibadan section), Nigeria Rehabilitation and Upgrading of Abuja – Keffi – Markurdi Road Project, Nigeria Supply of Rolling Stocks and Depot Equipment for Abuja Light Rail Project, and Nigeria Greater Abuja Water Supply Project.

While Nigeria has drawn consistently from China’s well under Buhari, China-Exim Bank declined recently declined an earlier agreement to grant Nigeria a loan of $22.79bn.

The loan had been approved under the 2016–2018 Federal Government External Borrowing (Rolling) Plan by the Senate and the House of Representatives on March 5, 2020, and June 2, 2020, respectively. This may impact the Nigerian Railway Modernisation Project (Kaduna–Kano segment), with the contractor (CCECC Nigeria Limited), and the Federal Ministry of Transportation, engaging China Development Bank for a loan of $973.48m.

Despite the recent hiccup in loan approval, China loaned Nigeria $658.72m in 2022.

In 2021, the immediate past Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, alleged that China was becoming sceptical of borrowing Nigeria money because of a National Assembly probe of the Federal Government’s ability to pay back its loan.

While answering questions on Politics Today, on Channels Television, Amaechi alleged that the probe prevented China from granting more loans to Nigeria.

He added that the combined effort of the Senate President and Speaker had stopped the probe, which had helped.

Recently, the President of the World Bank, David Malpass, told The BBC that he was concerned about some of China’s loans to developing economies in Africa.

He noted that the terms and conditions of these loans need to be more transparent. This is as countries including Ghana and Zambia appear to be struggling to repay their debts to Beijing.

He said, “What I encourage strongly is that they be transparent in their contracts. That’s been one of the problems; if you write a contract and say ‘but don’t show it to anybody else’, that’s a minus. So, get away from that.”

He warned, “For governments in Africa, they shouldn’t be offering collateral as an inducement to make a loan, because it locks it up for generations. That’s been happening with China.”

Peter Obi: Fake tape ploy to divert attention on flawed poll, drug case – S/East youths

The Coalition of South East Youth Leaders, COSEYL, the apex socio-political youth group in the South East geopolitical zone, has said that the circulation of fake news about the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, LP, Mr Peter Obi, by the camp of the president -elect, Bola Tinubu, is to divert attention on the flawed February 25 election conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.

President General of the group, Mr. Goodluck Ibem in a statement on Sunday particularly cited what he called the manufactured fake audio tape of the LP presidential candidate and the Presiding Bishop of Living Faith Church, (aka Winners Chapel), Bishop David Oyedepo.

According to him, such frivolous and fake audio tape was the handiwork of desperate politicians in the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, to drown the impact of the topical drug case.

Ibem said: “They suddenly manufactured this fake audio tape in order to change the topic of the drug case and election rigging which they know are solid evidences against them.

“It is very unfortunate that they will go as far as insulting and questioning the integrity of a revered man of God like Bishop David Oyedepo and a man of integrity like Mr Peter Obi just to score cheap political points.

“Mr Peter Obi never campaigned on the basis of religion or ethnicity, but engaged Nigerians on issue-based campaigns during the electioneering period before the elections.

“We know who Bishop Oyedepo and Peter Obi are, and they will never be involved in such kind of discussions and so you people have therefore failed woefully on this evil cheap political propaganda.

“We know vividly that the reason for manufacturing this fake audio tape is just to divert attention of Nigerians from the drug case, but Nigerians are wiser and can never be deceived by such cheap false propaganda.

“We call on Nigerians to ignore the antics of enemies of our democracy and our nation who want to destroy the peace in the country because of their selfish political benefits.”

May 29: We ‘re prepared to defend Tinubu’s mandate – OPCI

A Socio Yoruba group, Oodua Progressives Care- Initiate(OPCI) has vowed to defend the mandate given to the president-elect, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu by vast majority of Nigerians during the March 25,2023 presidential election.

The group said it would resist the repeat of the outcome of June 12 election when the election of another Yoruba man, the late Chief Mashood Abiola was annulled, by mobilising all the sisters organizations, Yoruba sons and daughters within and outside the country to defend the said mandate, stressing that,”We are ready to lay down our lives if situation demand.”

The president of OPCI, Chief Maruf Olanrewaju addressing a crowded press conference in Ilorin, Kwara State capital on Sunday described the election that produced Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu as free, fair and credible.

He said the group is prepared to resist any attempt by those it called enemies of democracy to stop or disrupt the inauguration of Tinubu on May 29, 2023.

Olanrewaju in his speech titled” Stop drumming for anarchy on May 29 handing over”, said
“In 2023 presidential general election, it is undisputable fact Chief Bola Ahmed Tinubu won the election with over eight million votes and he was declared winner by INEC chairman, Professor Mahmud Yakubu and certificate of return was given to Chief Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

“After the declaration by INEC, some opposition political parties raised alarm and they were advised to seek redress through the legal means in the court of law by President Muhammadu Buhari, of which we believe it’s part of democracy.

“Ladies and gentlemen, members of the press, it came to us as a surprise the action of some hooligans, criminals, enemies of democracy and enemies of our dear nation calling for military coup against our democracy and interim government instead of proper handing over to the president – elect on May 29.

“Ladies and gentlemen, brothers and sisters, members of the press, my fellow comrades, OPCI as an organisation that believe in efficacy of law, democracy and the unity of Nigeria, we shall not and we will not fold our hands and be watching these elements of destruction to truncate our democracy. If it was done successfully on June 12 election in 1993, we will not allow it to repeat itself on February 25 election. We will do everything possible to defend the democracy, to sustain the democracy, to grow the democracy and to defend the mandate given to Chief Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

” We will mobilise all the sisters organizations, Yoruba sons and daughters within and outside the country to defend the said mandate. We are ready to lay down our lives if situation demand; we shall fight this battle without looking back to logical conclusion. We will not allow any intruder or any parasite individual or group of people to dethrone our democracy; we are ready to defend it with the last drop of our blood.

” We are hereby calling on some elements of destruction that are parading themselves as Yoruba leaders, either individuals or an association no matter how highly -placed calling for cancellation of the election or any statement from whoever call him/ herself a leader in Yoruba land capable to cause crisis or turn our nation to state of anarchy will be rejected and dealt with.

“We are in a global village, the era of analogue has gone and gone forever, they should not attempt to draw us back by any means, to be forewarned is to be foreharmed.”
