Seriki Williams Abass was born originally at a town in Yorubaland called Ijoga Orile. The town is in todays Ogun State in South West Nigeria. Ijoga Orile is not far from Ilaro and Abeokuta. His birth name was Faremilekun and his father’s name was Fagbemi. He was captured by the Dahomeans and became a slave at the age of six years old. The country called Benin Republic today used to be known as Dahomey. The name Dahomey was changed to Benin Republic in 1975.
Seriki Williams Abass of Badagry’s journey as a slave began in Dahomey. His first owner in Dahomey was called Abass. His first owner (Abass) in Dahomey was an Islamic scholar and a slave trader. Abass in Dahomey later sold him to a European slave trader by the name of Williams. Faremilekun, the son of Fagbemi became known as William Abass because slaves bear their owners name. The first thing that was taken from a slave was his identity. A slave does not have a name. Slaves bear their owner’s name or the name their owners give to them or called them. Faremilekun took the name of his two masters, namely Abass and Williams. He became known as Williams Abass.
Mr. Williams brought him as a slave from Abass and took him to Brazil. There in Brazil, Mr. Williams realized that there was something unusual about him. So, he refused to resell the boy and took him to his house and made him a domestic slave while he sold his other slaves. Domestic slaves work in their master’s house and plantation slaves work on the farm. Mr. Williams (The European) treated him well and taught him (Faremilekun a.k.a. Williams Abass) how to read and write. Mr. Williams treated him well. The boy himself was so intelligent to the extent that he learnt how to speak English, Dutch, Portuguese, and Spanish through Mr. Williams and the friends of Mr. Williams in Brazil.
The Statue of Seriki Williams Abass at Aiyetoro roundabout near Abeokuta. Seriki Abass ruled Badagry for 24years, founded Aiyetoro and Idogo.

Seriki Williams Abass was a slave who later became a slave trader. Mr. Williams (The European slave trader who reside in Brazil) sponsored him (Seriki Williams Abass) back to Africa. The first place he settled down at was called the Colony of Lagos. He first settled down at OFIN, around Isale Eko in Lagos Island. Some of Seriki Williams Abass descendants in Lagos Island today bear Abass as their family name, some bear Williams, while some bear Seriki-Abass and others bear Williams-Abass together. The Banire families in Lagos Island are also related to Seriki Williams Abass.
Seriki Williams Abass later left Lagos Island to settle down in Badagry in the 1830’s. Before seriki Williams Abass settled down in Badagry, he was conversant with the territory. He usually visits Porto-Novo, Badagry, the Egbado corridors etc. He had business relationships as far as Ketu in present Benin Republic and he maintained his business contact with Mr. Williams, his former master in Brazil who continued to send his Slave merchant friends to him. Seriki Williams Abass continued his exploits and because of the prosperous slavery business in Badagry, he decided to settle down there.
In Badagry, through the support of Mr. Williams (His European former master) and his friends, the Brazillian Barracoon was built for him (Seriki Abass) and he also spent his money and the labour was supplied by his slaves.
Chief Williams became one of the most remarkable figures in the Badagry District whose administration was effected by twenty salaried chiefs and 30 police Constables (Olaide-Mesewaku 2000).
In 1897, he was given the chieftaincy of Seriki Musulumi of the whole Western Yorubaland around the Egba
Under the British Colonial Policy of Indirect Rule, Abass was appointed a Paramount Chief of Badagry District in 1913.
Seriki Williams founded Aiyetoro and Idogo, both in today’s Ogun state.
On 11th June 1919, Seriki Abass died in Badagry.

“Afterwards, in continuation of the legacy of excellence I inherited from Yeye Asiwaju, I gave out Sallah gifts, in the form of rams, bags of rice, and cash in some instances, to our political and traditional leaders in the district

The senator has also distributed three sets of palliatives to the constituents, cutting across all spectra of the society.

The acting Dean of Medical College, University of Ibadan,Prof Adebola Ogunbiyi ,invited all the old students who are now doctors produced by the college to a zoom meeting.

The reason for the meeting was not farfetched.

The Professor was sick with worry about the infrastructure decay and rot at the medical college she oversees in Ibadan.

She is aware that the Nigerian government is too broke to fund it, so she came up with a master stroke, which was to tap into the resources and social capital of the alumni produced by the medical college scattered all over the world to give the medical college a facelift.

A Zoom meeting was fixed on Monday, two days ago and the link sent to the former students of the medical college.

Kicking off the meeting, Prof. Ogunbiyi narrated the challenges the current medical students of the college are facing and then appealed to the alumni of the college to support her in rebuilding and restoring the lost glory of the medical college.

Her speech opened the floodgates of donations from the medical doctors produced by the Medical College, University of Ibadan.

The donations were coming in trickles.

1 million naira here.

200,000 there.

Until it got to the turn of Dr. Philip O. Ozuah(attached in the picture) an old student of the college who is currently the President and CEO of Montefiore Medicine in New York.

Philip O Ozuah did not say too much as he went straight to the point of making a donation of $1,000,000 (700,000,000).

In his words, UI’s medical college shaped and refined him into the man he is today, so he has the duty to give back to the school.

When Dr Philip announced the $1,000,000 donation, all of the old students in the zoom session began shouting, "Wow!"Wow, like an ambulance.

Even the dean, who called the zoom meeting, was speechless as she did not see that coming.

None of the old students of the medical college could donate again since Ozuah had set a standard they could not match.

From shouting Wow! Wow! The Zoom fundraising meeting came to an end with the closing prayer said immediately.

It should be noted that Ozuah had his medical degree certification at the University of Ibadan and did his internship at the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital before he proceeded to Southern California for his Master's program and got his PhD from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

Let no one deceive you; legit money is good and makes life very easy to live and navigate.

Prof Ozuah has redeemed his pledge.

Nigeria has pool of talented Human Resource we don’t know what to do with.

Hajji Azeez Arisekola Alao was turbaned as the Aare Musulumi of Yoruba land on June 14, 1980. He was just 35 at the time.
Same 1980, he was also conferred with the chieftaincy title of Bobagunwa of Ejigbo, by the Ogiyan of Ejigbo, Oba Omowonuola Oyeyode Oyesosin. He was the Aare Ikolaba, given by the late Olubadan Daniel Tayo Omopeunnu Akinbiyi in 1981.

Ever since the turbaning ceremony, Hajji Azeez had stopped attending social events where he would spray musicians. He became conscious of his public activities till he breathed his last. Earlier before his becoming the Aare Musulumi, he'd been a socialite. Ebenezer Obey Fabiyi benefitted from his generosity. He waxed an album in his honor. "Oyinbo oni Datsun mi..." By 1979, Arisekola had become a popular distributor of Datsun cars, when he was barely 34.

So, it's no exaggeration to say that Arisekola had been a millionaire since the late 70s. It's noteworthy to acknowledge that he started as a Gamalin 20 distributor, walking from one place to another just to sell the product. By the late 1980s, he'd registered his Lister Group of Companies. He was the Chairman/Managing Director, Lister Group of Companies.

When Babangida became HoS in 1985, Arisekola became a friend of Mr. President, though their friendship had been active since the early 80s. He also benefitted from the Abacha military administration. You remember how UI students mobbed him in 1996? They didn't spare his Limousin. Remember this song?:

Ogun spends N3.5bn on EduCash
7th April 2024

The Ogun State Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Prof Abayomi Arigbabu, said that the government is spending N3.5bn on the ongoing Educash transfer programme for the students of both primary and secondary schools as well as tertiary institution students who are indigenes of the state.

The Educash programme is part of the intervention programmes rolled out by Governor Dapo Abiodun to cushion the effect of the economic hardship caused by the fuel subsidy removal as well as forex volatility leading to sharp increase in prices of commodities.

The commissioner said that under this programme, 100,000 indigent pupils in public primary and secondary schools, as well as 50,000 students in tertiary institutions across the country, will benefit.

He also disclosed that over 40,000 students and pupils in primary and secondary school have so far benefited from the programme.

Arigbabu stated this on Sunday shortly after monitoring the cash transfer to parents of indigent students in public primary and secondary schools in the Remo division of the state.

Arigbabu promised that no one would be left out.

Some of the schools visited include St. Saviours Anglican Primary School, Ikenne-Remo, Christ Apostolic Grammar School, Iperu, Ansar-Ud-Deen School 1, Iperu-Remo, St James Anglican Primary School, Iperu-Remo and Methodist Comprehensive College, Ijoku, Sagamu among others.

He said, “At the end of the day, the intention is to pay almost 50,000 tertiary students. We have captured their data; we have just a little bit less than 50,000. That is over N2.5 billion for the tertiary level.

“At the primary and secondary school level, we are going to eventually pay 100,000 pupils, that is N1 billion. 100,000 indigent students are targeted so that their parents will get N10,000 each. As of today, we have paid 20,000 students through their parents.

“At the tertiary level, as we speak, we have paid over 20,000 students, N50,000 each,” he said.

The commissioner also said that monitoring the transfer was just a symbolic exercise as the state has over 2,000 primary and secondary schools, even as he assured parents who are yet to receive the money to remain calm as it would soon be their turn.

“The schools that we have been to are just a tip of the iceberg. How many schools can we get to out of the almost 2,100 primary and secondary schools? But, we did these ones symbolically to let people see that the governor is a promise keeping governor.

“I want to assure parents who haven’t gotten their own that it is coming, because, we are paying in batches. Apart from that, don’t forget, there can be issues of network.

“If anybody for any reason didn’t get it, let us know through the principal, and we will look into it because nobody is going to be given cash. It will still have to be transferred to their accounts,” he said.

In her remarks, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Education, Mrs. Ronke Soyombo, admonished parents not to use the money for their own personal needs but to ensure that they prioritise the future of their children.

Mrs. Oyefeso Blessing and Mrs. Oluwayemi Osolukoya, parents to indigent students at Methodist Comprehensive College, Ijoku, Sagamu, commended the governor for putting the interest of their children at heart, even as they assured that the money would be used for the purpose it was meant to serve.

Chief Oshodi Landuji Tapa (1800 – 1868) was Oba Kosoko's war captain and one of the most powerful chiefs in the Oba of Lagos' court.

ORIGINS
Oshodi Tapa is reported to have been a slave from the Nupe Kingdom at Bida who was indentured to Oba Osinlokun.
Oshodi family accounts note that when Tapa was a little boy about to be loaded onto a Portuguese ship bound for the Americas, he escaped and sought refuge in Oba Osinlokun's palace. The name Tapa is a reference to the Nupe people.

ASCENDANCY
Through his many talents, leadership, and strength of personality, Oshodi Tapa rose to become a trading agent for Oba Osinlokun,.He and another slave (Dada Antonio) were sent by Oba Osilokun to Brazil to learn Portuguese, acquire the necessary commercial and cultural knowledge to conduct trade on behalf of the Oba and to collect duties from Portuguese slave traders. After serving Osilokun, Oshodi Tapa became a key adviser and military chief of Oba Kosoko.

WAR CHIEF AND EMISSARY FOR OBA KOSOKO
Oshodi Tapa was with Kosoko at Epe when he fled Lagos following his feuds with Eletu Odibo.[8] Oshodi Tapa managed the 3-week long Ogun Olomiro (Salt Water War) assault by the Kosoko faction in July 1845 on Oba Akitoye's palace resulting in Akitoye fleeing to Abeokuta. Tapa played a diplomatic role by granting Akitoye safe passage through the Agboyi Creek. In explaining Akitoye's escape to Kosoko, Tapa noted that Akitoye put his pursuers in a trance.

Oshodi Tapa participated in the last minute November 1851 diplomatic effort that the British attempted before bombarding Lagos. Tapa reportedly relayed Kosoko's rejection of British friendship to the visiting party of Consul John Beecroft, Commander Wilmot, Commander Gardner, and Lieutenant Patey.

Oshodi Tapa played a significant role in putting up a spirited defense to the British invasion of Lagos in November and December 1851. After the British defeated Kosoko, Oshodi Tapa fled with Kosoko to Epe where he remained a Kosoko ally. Oshodi Tapa played an instrumental role in negotiations for the signing of The Treaty of Epe on September 28, 1854, between Kosoko and Consul Benjamin Campbell.

MERCHANT AND POWER BROKER AFTER LAGOS' ANNEXATION AS A BRITISH COLONY IN 1861
Tapa returned to Lagos along with Kosoko in 1862. He settled in the Epetedo area close to the Oba's palace. He was given the traditional title of Oloja of Ereko and during this period became allied with Governor John Hawley Glover who appreciated Tapa's skills, contacts, and political experience and leveraged his relationship with Tapa to his advantage as Governor of Lagos. Glover reportedly consulted Oshodi Tapa before implementing any new public projects and he eventually became an emissary of Glover's government.

Tapa also leveraged his vast experience as a trader during his earlier years serving Oba Osinlokun in colonial Lagos. The German firm O'Swald conducted all of its business in Lagos through Tapa. He successfully transitioned from human trafficking to expanding into producing palm oil, cotton, and ivory using slave labor.

DEATH

Oshodi Tapa died in 1868 and a monument was erected outside his compound in Epetedo.

𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗕𝗔𝗔𝗟𝗘 𝗢𝗙 𝗜𝗚𝗕𝗢𝗦𝗘𝗥𝗘, 𝗟𝗔𝗚𝗢𝗦 𝗔𝗡𝗗 𝗛𝗜𝗦 𝗦𝗢𝗡. From the history of Lagos, Igbosere is derived from the two Yoruba words; 'Igbo' and 'Osere', meaning the forest of Osere trees. It is so named after the predominant ‘Osere’ trees found in the forest of that area. Osere trees are popular for its wood which is used for carpentary (Ìkàn) and the carving of canoes (Ọkọ̀) for transport and fishing on the Lagos lagoon (Ọ̀sà). The economic activities in the area drew traders from far and near, including Ijebu, Ilaje, Oyo, Ijesha, Egun, Itsekiri and many others including Benin who come to trade and acquire items on Aromire's farm (Oko Aromire) at Iduro Imota (station of the Imota people), which became Idumota. The Osere trees at Igbo osere (Osere Forest) were also sold as plank and wood for carpentry at Onikan (the Carpenters) from where finished products were moved to the Iddo island market.
