The 13 suspects had been in detention near Kanyama, in the country's south, facing charges
including assault, affray, and theft.

Detective Inspector Titus Phiri "forcibly seized cell keys" on Tuesday morning whilst "in a state of intoxication," Zambia's Police Service said in a press release on Wednesday, January 1.

A manhunt has been launched for 13 detainees
who remain at large, according to the police
statement.

"The Zambia Police Service reiterates its
commitment to upholding law and order and
assures the public that decisive action will be
taken against any officer found to be abusing
their authority or acting contrary to the law," it
added.

Lagos Government Bans Pure Water From January 2025

The Lagos State Goverment has announced plans to ban circulation of Single Use Plastics, such as pet bottles, sachet water, among others from January 2025 across the state.

Recall that the state government had in January 2024 banned the use of styrofoam in all government establishments and across the metropolis in general, following increasing prevalence of plastic waste and its negative effect on the environment in recent years.

Meanwhile, stakeholders in the sector have urged the state government to carryout phase implementation of the ban rather than outright enforcement for effective and efficient compliance as well as giving it human face in the present economic hardship.

Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, announced this on Thursday, at a stakeholders’ workshop and awareness on the implementation of the ban on usage of Styrofoam and SUPs for packaging in Lagos, held at Manufacturer Association of Nigeria, .

Wahab, who was represented by the Special Adviser on The Environment, Olakunle Rotimi-Akodu, explained that the ban set to commence from January 2025, is part of measures by the State Government to put in place policy guidelines for plastic utility in further ensuring a sustainable management of plastic waste, healthy and safe environment.

Wahab added that the policy guideline will also be backed up with appropriate legal framework to be established through an enabling law.

He disclosed that Lagos presently generates about 13,000 tonnes of waste products monthly, with plastics making up over 60 per cent.

According to Wahab, “Plastics waste materials make up a significant proportion of solid wastes and litter the metropolis.

“It has become a highly visible part of the waste stream, PET, Styrofoam and nylon for sachet water, popularly called “pure water” commonly being used for water and beverages, take away plates and cups, carrier bags, among others.

“This development is posing environmental challenges ranging from Ecosystems degradation, Drainage clogging and flooding, Lagoon and Ocean debris with attendant harm to human resulting in high socio-economic impacts on the State.”

He stressed that effective plastic waste management is fundamental to delivery of the State government’s priority transformational agenda as laid down in Lagos State Development Plan (LSDP) and THEMES’ Plus Agenda of Governor Bababjide Sanwo-Olu, because it is a resource that can be managed to achieve economic, social and environmental benefits.

Wahab added that sustainable plastic waste management will create value from the waste stream and formalize the waste-pickers’ sector to improve livelihoods and reduce the pressure on landfill.

“It will improve the situation of the State’s drainage channels and reduce plastic pollution in the marine environment,” the commissioner stated.

Lagos chairperson, Association for Table Water Producers of Nigeria, ATWAP, Mosaku Ololade, said, “We have been engaging Lagos State Government on the way forward and we have been sensitizing our members on the planned ban.

“We want the government to continue to engage us. We are a responsible association. We are ready to work with the government.

“We have over 2,000 members in Lagos alone with over 10,000 workers. We heeby, implore the government to implement the ban in phases to allow our members ample opportunity for compliance.

“There are lot of things to be put in place before coming up with total enforcement.”

South African Farmer Kills Two Women, Feeds Them To Pigs
The case of two black women allegedly shot and fed to pigs by a white farmer and his workers has sparked widespread outrage in South Africa, BBC reports on Wednesday.

Maria Makgato, 45, and Lucia Ndlovu, 34, were reportedly searching for food on a farm near Polokwane in Limpopo province when they were shot in August.

Their bodies were then allegedly fed to pigs in an attempt to conceal the crime.
The court is currently deciding whether to grant bail to the farm owner, Zachariah Johannes Olivier, 60, and his two employees, Adrian de Wet, 19, and William Musora, 50, as they await trial for murder.

None of the men have entered a formal plea yet.

BBC reports that protests erupted outside the courtroom in Polokwane, with demonstrators holding placards and demanding that the suspects be denied bail.

Inside the courtroom, families of the victims and the accused filled the benches as magistrate Ntilane Felleng allowed media coverage, citing public interest in the case.

The three accused also face charges of attempted murder for allegedly shooting at Ndlovu’s husband, Mabutho Ncube, who managed to survive the attack.

Ncube said he reported the incident to the police, who later found the decomposed bodies of his wife and Makgato in the farm’s pigsty.

According to the BBC, the incident has devastated the families of the victims, especially Makgato’s four sons, who range in age from five to 22.

Her eldest son, Ranti Makgato, tearfully told the BBC, “My mum died a painful death, she was a loving mother who did everything for us. We lacked nothing because of her.

The National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadau, on Thursday addressed Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero as the Emir of Kano.

Both Bayero and Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi are laying claim to the revered stool of the Emir of Kano.

In March 2020, former Governor Abdullahi Ganduje had dethroned Sanusi and named Bayero Emir.

However, four years after, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf sacked Bayero and reinstated Sanusi.

Bayero’s whose sack was announced when he was out of the state, had returned to Kano and moved into the mini palace at Nasarawa, where he has been holding court.

Angered by his action, Yusuf had ordered the immediate arrest of the monarch, but rather than comply, security was beefed up at the mini palace, fueling the speculation that Bayero had federal backing.

Aminu Gwarzo, Deputy Governor of Kano, had alleged that Ribadu facilitated the return of Bayero by providing him with two private jets.

But Ribadu had denied the allegation while threatening to sue Gwarzo.

In a letter, Aliyu & Musa Chambers, counsel to Ribadu, demanded an apology from the deputy governor who later recanted.

The battle for the control of the emirate later shifted to the courts as both camps filed different suits to challenge on anbother.

However at the 1st Annual International Lecture organised by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) with the theme, “Insecurity in the Sahel (2008-2024)” in Abuja on Thursday, Ribadu addressed Bayero as the Emir of Kano.

While recognizing dignitaries at the event, Ribadu had said, “Of course the Emir of Kano, Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero.”

His comment elicited a thunderous applause in the hall.

A social media user and supporter of the Emir, Rabiu Uba Danzainab posted the 33 seconds video on his X page (rabiuuba4) with the caption, “Ribadu addressed our Emir as the Legitimate Emir of Kano.”

But another user, Ahmed Idris, said, “APC Emir. He better starts a new jihad.”

Another X User, , said, “Only the court of a competent jurisdiction can do so, not Ribadu.”

“The legitimate emir is not seated on the high table.. is that?” asked another user

Italian referee, Fabio Maresca has been suspended from officiating UEFA Champions League (UCL) games after allegedly threatening to kill a player.

Maresca also faces a potential one-month suspension from Italian Serie A refereeing duties.

According to Corriere della Sera, the incident happened in the face-off between Kuwait SC and Al-Arabi when Maresca was confronted by Khaled Al Murshed upon colliding with each other.

While the referee did not make much out of it, a board member of Al Arabi, Adnan Abdul, revealed that Maresca said he would ‘kill the player’.

Maresca, who was selected as the fourth official for the tie between PSV and Sporting CP, was then replaced by his compatriot, Daniele Doveri, a matchup that eventually ended 1-1 on Tuesday night.

However, another Italian referee, Marco Guida officiated the game, assisted by the duo of Ciro Carbone and Giorgio Peretti.

Crossdresser, Bobrisky Never Spoke To Me, Never Met Him Before – Falana
Human rights lawyer, Femi Falana, SAN, has disclosed that he has never spoken or met with a crossdresser, Idris Okuneye, popularly known as Bobrisky before in his lifetime.

Falana made this disclosure when he appeared in an interview on Channels TV on Thursday, insisting that none of his family had anything to do with Bobrisky.

He added that it was true that Bobrisky called his son, Falz, to help him with financial assistance when he was in prison, which he (Falz) refused to do.

Falana said, “Bobrisky never spoke to me, I have never met him, I don’t know him from Adam. He was alleged to have spoken to my son, Folarin, Falz. My son said this guy was appealing to him for assistance, and called my son, please, can you give me N3million to be placed in a special part of the prison; we call it VIP section.

"And my son asked, are you calling me under the authorisation of the superintendent of prisons, he said "No, please don’t call me again. I’m unable to assist you to bribe the prison authorities, and please be careful since you are already in jail for an offence, and if you are going to call me next time, you can either do it through the superintendent or write a letter endorsed by the prison authorities", and that was the last.

“Somebody now said that he listened to a tape somewhere and he went out to lampoon, however, defamed me. My son has never negotiated fix on behalf of anybody. On the contrary, my three children normally refer people who need assistance to me.

“Now what I am going to do: I have resisted the temptation to file a criminal complaint because I am leading a team of lawyers in West Africa, campaigning for decriminalisation of freedom of expression. In this case, we are not going to file a criminal complaint, we won’t be pushed to do that. What we will do is embark on civil proceedings with a view to restoring our integrity, my own name and that of my son.”

Falana’s comments were in reaction to controversies that had trailed a recent publication made by social media influencer, Martins Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan.

VeryDarkMan allegedly made some unverified and inaccurate claims against Falana, saying he was involved in a bribery allegation with Bobrisky.

However, VeryDarkMan on Monday tendered his "unreserved apology" to human rights lawyer, Femi Falana, SAN when he appeared before the Nigerian House of Representatives.

He had said also he did not believe Falana was involved in the alleged bribery levelled against cross-dresser Idris Okuneye, popularly known as Bobrisky, and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
