Three killed, 38 injured in Russian attack on Ukrainian city of Kryvyi Rih.

A Russian missile has hit two apartment buildings in the central Ukrainian city of Kryvyi Rih, killing three people and injuring at least 38, with rescue teams sifting through rubble in a night-time search for survivors.

Serhiy Lysak, governor of the Dnipropetrovsk region, put the provisional injury toll from the attack on Tuesday at 28 adults and 10 children.

“The emergency services and residents who care are rescuing residents blocked in their apartments and are continuing to search for anyone who might be under the rubble,” Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko wrote.

“Four people have already been rescued.”

Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who was born and raised in Kryvyi Rih, said on Telegram that search operations “will continue as long as they are needed.”

A fiery explosion rocks a residential neighborhood in Sanhe city on the outskirts of Beijing China on Wednesday March 13, 2024.

A deadly suspected gas explosion ripped through a residential neighborhood in northern China on Wednesday, leaving a scene of devastation.
The powerful blast occurred just before 8 a.m. at a ground-floor restaurant in a residential area of Sanhe city, Hebei province, east of the capital Beijing, state broadcaster CCTV said.

It killed at least two people, injured 26 others, and destroyed the four-story building, according to CCTV.

Authorities have “basically determined” the explosion was caused by a gas leak, though they have not identified the specific cause or location of the blast, the broadcaster reported.

The dramatic blast and its aftermath were captured in footage circulating on Chinese social media site Weibo, which showed a large fireball exploding from a multistory building, destroying its walls and ceiling and sending huge plumes of smoke into the sky.

Local residents said on social media they heard a loud bang in the early morning and felt their buildings trembling.

Buildings across the street from the blast site were also impacted, with glass shattered and shop signs damaged, footage aired on CCTV showed.

By Wednesday afternoon, the fire had been put out and residents living within 500 meters (1,640 feet) of the site had been evacuated, CCTV said.

Ukraine war: Some residents leave Belgorod after deadly attacks

Russia has begun moving some residents from the city of Belgorod following deadly attacks by Ukraine.

Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov said several families had left the city, which is close to the Ukrainian border.

Twenty-five people were killed and more than 100 injured there on Saturday in one of the deadliest attacks on Russia since it invaded Ukraine.

The attack followed a massive wave of Russian strikes on Ukraine a week ago, which killed 39 and injured over 160.

Those strikes were described by Kyiv as Russia's biggest missile bombardment of the war so far.

On Friday, Mr Gladkov said he had seen appeals on social media by people saying, "We are scared, help us get to a safe place."

"Of course we will! We have already moved several families," he said.

The governor said residents would be taken to the towns of Stary Oskol and Gubkin where they could stay "for as long as necessary".

However, he said not everyone could be accommodated there, so he would ask colleagues from other regions to help.

The governor later posted a warning of a possible missile attack and urged residents to head home or into shelters.

Russia has repeatedly accused Ukraine of being behind drone strikes in recent months.

Kyiv rarely admits to such attacks across the border, although it has carried out such strikes before.

The cross-border fire comes as the US accuses Russia of a "significant and concerning escalation" in Ukraine, with the use of ballistic missiles and launchers supplied by North Korea.

Moscow has denied any such collaboration.

The last US military aid package to Ukraine, worth some $250m (£195m), was approved by the White House on 27 December.

Talks on further funding have stalled in Congress because of a lack of support among Republicans, who insist that tougher security measures on the US-Mexico border must be part of any military aid deal.

Ukraine has warned that its war effort and the country's public finances are at risk if further Western aid does not come soon.

Supreme Court to rule if Trump can run for President.

The US Supreme Court has said it will hear a historic case to determine if Donald Trump can run for president.

The justices agreed to take up Mr Trump's appeal against a decision by Colorado to remove him from the 2024 ballot in that state.

The case will be heard in February and the ruling will apply nationwide.

Lawsuits in a number of states are seeking to disqualify Mr Trump, arguing that he engaged in insurrection during the US Capitol riot three years ago.

The legal challenges hinge on whether a Civil War-era constitutional amendment renders Mr Trump ineligible to stand as a candidate.

The Supreme Court's decision to hear Mr Trump's appeal came after attorney generals from 27 states filed a brief asking the court to reject Colorado's ruling.

In it, they argue that removing Mr Trump from the ballot would "create widespread chaos".

"Most obviously, it casts confusion into an election cycle that is just weeks away," reads the submission.

Nigeria forward Victor Osimhen broke the Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane stranglehold after he was named Africa's best player.

Osimhen was selected as Africa's best player ahead of Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah and Morocco right-back Achraf Hakimi.

BREAKING: President Tinubu Orders Nigerian Federal Universities To Stop Arbitrary School Fees’ Increment

UNIJOS increment is coming a week after the University of Lagos (UNILAG) announced increment prompting parents and Nigerians in general to kick against the astronomical increase of school fees by universities in the country.

Nigerian president, Bola Tinubu, has ordered federal universities to halt their “arbitrary increase in sundry fees payable” amid the hardship experienced by Nigerians due to fuel subsidy removal.

Dele Alake, special adviser to the president on communication and strategy, confirmed the president’s directive in a statement on Monday.
He said the development was in furtherance of the President’s desire to ease the burden of the fuel subsidy removal on students of higher institutions of learning,

Bluesky Global Media Reporters on Saturday reported that the University of Jos (UNIJOS) became the latest institution to hike fees when it announced the increase of school fees from the current N45,000 to N213,000 an increment of over 300 percent.

According to new school fees chat signed by the Registrar of the university, the N213,000 fee is for 100 and 200 level students while the 300 level students and above will now pay N160,000.

UNIJOS increment is coming a week after the University of Lagos (UNILAG) announced increment prompting parents and Nigerians in general to kick against the astronomical increase of school fees by universities in the country.

Meanwhile in a statement on Monday, the presidency said, “The desire of the President is to see that students can access their campuses without much difficulty as a result of higher transportation costs.

“The provision of the buses will also remove the burden of additional cost of daily commuting on parents and guardians.

“In line with his promise to ensure no Nigerian student abandons his or her educational pursuits as a result of lack of money and economic circumstances of their parents, President Tinubu has also approved the removal of all restrictions on the students’ loan to make it available to any student or household that may desire it,” the statement read

Alake added that the president also warned authorities of all federal institutions against “arbitrary” increase of fees.

“Similarly, President Tinubu has directed the authorities in all Federal Institutions of higher learning to avoid arbitrary increase in sundry fees payable and where possible defer further increase so that parents and students don’t face too many difficulties.”

In Harry Kane, England have always had one world-class goalscorer in their frontline. On Monday night, they showed that they might just have three. Kane, Saka and Marcus Rashford all scored, combining for six of seven England goals as the Three Lions battered North Macedonia to take a huge stride towards Euro 2024 qualification.

Inevitably, Kane was on the board first, finishing a neat England move down the right. But the other two took over soon after. Saka smashed one into the roof of the net from a tight angle; Rashford, not to be outdone, responded by tucking one into an empty net.

Saka went on to bag two more to complete a first career hat-trick, including a sublime effort for his brace, while Kane converted from the spot to complete a 7-0 battering.

There were other things to catch the eye on Monday night, too. A man suspected of stabbing four young children in a playground in the French resort of Annecy is being held on attempted murder charges, French prosecutors say.

The four children - aged between one and three - were attacked with a knife in a park in the Alpine region on Thursday.
French prosecutors said the actions of the suspected knifeman, who is of Syrian nationality, did not appear to be linked to terrorism.

The suspect is due to appear in court later on Saturday, prosecutors added during a press conference.
The four children - including a British girl who was on holiday with her parents in Annecy - are no longer in life-threatening situations, a local Annecy prosecutor said.

Two adults who were also injured during the attack are out of danger too, they added.

Emefiele’s ‘sins’ (Reason behind his Suspension)

The introduction of the naira redesign policy by the Emefiele-led CBN in October 2022 started on a controversial note as the then Minister Finance, Budget and National Planning, Zainab Ahmed, kicked against it barely 48 hours after it was announced.

Ahmed had stated that her ministry was not consulted and she was not aware of the monetary policy.

The reaction generated tension and uncertainty until the Presidency confirmed that Buhari approved the policy, which it said was to manage inflation, combat currency counterfeiting and ransom payment.

Early January 2023, the CBN started a cash swap programme in various local government areas to reach citizens in rural communities, who complained of the unavailability of banks in their localities.

The initial deadline of January 31, 2023, set by the apex bank for the old notes to cease being legal tender was moved to February 10, as the country fell into hard times with both the old and new naira notes going out of circulation.

The situation was compounded by fuel scarcity across the country as Nigerians berated the policies of the government as ill-thought.

Tinubu, who was then the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, also slammed those behind the naira redesign, which he said was targeted at his candidature.

While speaking in January during a campaign at the MKO Abiola Stadium in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, Tinubu said, “Let fuel be expensive, only they know where they keep it. Keep petrol, keep the naira, we will vote and be elected. You may change the ink of naira notes. What you expect will not happen. We will win.

“They said petrol will rise to N200/litre and N500/litre, let your mind be at rest. They don’t want the forthcoming election to hold. They want to scatter it but that won’t be possible.

“They thought they could cause trouble; they sabotaged fuel but with or without fuel, with or without motorcycles and tricycles, we will vote and win. This is a superior revolution.”

Emefiele had subsequently instituted a suit against the Independent National Electoral Commission and the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice over his eligibility to contest the APC primary.

Tinubu suspends Emefiele, orders CBN probe

President Bola Tinubu has suspended the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Mr Godwin Emefiele, from office with immediate effect.

This is sequel to the ongoing investigation of his office and the planned reforms in the financial sector of the economy, according to a statement on Friday by the Director of Information, Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Willie Bassey.

According to the statement, Emefiele has been directed to immediately hand over the affairs of his office to the Deputy Governor (Operations Directorate), who will act as the CBN governor pending the conclusion of the investigation and the reforms.

The CBN listed the Deputy Director, Operations Directorate, as Mr Folashodun Adebisi Shonubi.

Unconfirmed reports emerged late on Friday that operatives of the Department of State Services had arrested the suspended CBN governor. But the spokesman for the DSS, Peter Afunaya, told one of our correspondents that he could not confirm the arrest.

Emefiele, who was appointed the apex bank’s governor on June 4, 2014, was also at the centre of a storm in January 2023 when security operatives attempted to arrest him over allegations of terrorism financing and economic crime.

Section 11 of the CBN Act, 2007 gives the President power to terminate the appointment of the apex bank governor, but such must have the backing of lawmakers.

“The CBN governor can be removed by the President provided that the removal of the governor shall be supported by two-thirds majority of the Senate praying that he be removed,” the section stated.

The Act also states that the governor, deputy governor, or director of the CBN can be removed if they are serving as a lawmaker or a director of a bank.

“A person shall not remain a governor, deputy governor or director of the Bank if he is a member of any federal or state legislative house; or if he is a director, officer or employee of any bank licensed under the Banks and Other Financial Institutions Act.”

The CBN Act further states that criminal offences and mental health conditions can result in the CBN governor’s termination of appointment.

“The governor, deputy governor or director shall cease to hold office in the Bank if he becomes of unsound mind or, owing to ill health, is incapable of carrying out his duties: is convicted of any criminal offence by a court of competent jurisdiction except for traffic offences or contempt proceedings arising in connection with the ex*****on or intended ex*****on of any power or duty conferred under this Act or the Banks and Other Financial Institutions Act,” the Act adds.

Ukraine dam: UN warns of 'grave consequences' as thousands flee homes

The destruction of a major dam in Ukraine will have "grave and far-reaching consequences for thousands of people", the United Nations has warned.

UN aid chief Martin Griffiths said the scale of the catastrophe at the Kakhovka dam in southern Ukraine would only become clear in the coming days.
Thousands have fled flooded homes in the area, an active war zone. There are fears water levels could rise further.

Ukraine and Russia have accused each other of blowing up the dam on Tuesday.

Addressing the UN Security Council late on Tuesday, Mr Griffiths warned that thousands of people in southern Ukraine were facing "the loss of homes, food, safe water and livelihoods".
As mass evacuations continue on Wednesday morning in Ukraine's Kherson region, satellite images have emerged showing widespread devastation there.

On Wednesday morning, 23 localities remained flooded, Ukrainian TV said in its latest news bulletin.

Overall, about 40,000 people needed to be evacuated, Ukraine's Deputy Prosecutor-General Viktoriya Lytvynova said earlier: 17,000 in Ukraine-held territory west of the Dnipro River and 25,000 in the Russian-occupied east.

More and more water is coming every hour' - people flee as Kakhovka dam bursts

A major catastrophe has been declared in southern Ukraine after a major dam in the Kherson region was breached. President Volodymyr Zelensky said nearly 100 towns and villages are under water with thousands of people being evacuated as a result. Ukraine and Russia are accusing each other of being saboteurs, but once again civilians are facing immediate consequences.

Ukraine MP Mr Goncharenko warned that tens of thousands of lives are at risk on both sides of the River Dnipro - including in the Russian occupied region of Ukraine to the south and in the city of Kherson to the north which was regained by Ukraine back in November.

"We see with our own eyes the level of water is increasing," he adds. "Also we can see the water is moving really quickly. To destroy the bridge with such awful consequences is just so barbaric."

Another Kherson resident, Olga, said she was woken up at 08:00 local time by messages that houses were flooded and the evacuation was under way.

She says she has packed her suitcase and has prepared everything she needs but she has four cats and two dogs and doesn't know how she'll take all of them with her.

On the southern banks of the River Dnipro one official in the Russian-occupied province of Kherson said the town of Oleshky has been "completely flooded".

"Evacuation... is possible only using special equipment," Andrei Alexeyenko said on Telegram.

He also posted videos showing one car standing in floodwaters up to window level and a lorry driving along a highway in water at least a foot (30 cm) deep.
