If any policeman demands money, ask for a receipt- FPRO tells Nigerians
The Nigerian Police Force Public Relations Officer (FPRO), Olumuyiwa Adejobi, on Friday, December 22, said that Nigerians should ask for a receipt from any police officer demanding money from them.
Adejobi disclosed this in an interview with TVC news 'Policing in the year 2023' on Friday, December 22.
He said: "Like I said earlier today at a programme that it takes you to tangle, in most cases you discovered that bribery is almost as eaten dip into our system in the country and that is why you see the Federal Government has taken the bull by the horn to do all things possible to stop bribery and to kill corruption in our country.
"Most of our men that you see are on the road that has been alleged of taking bribes from Nigerians, most of them are always encouraged to do so, we have said on several occasions that you don't offer bribes to policemen that is discharging his duty and for no reason should you offer.
"Offering a bribe to somebody on duty is even a criminal offence and it's high time we started taking these things seriously, we started thinking outside the box to make sure we have a perfect system in the country.
"We are not generating, police will not be generating fund revenue into his own pocket if at all there is need for you to even pay for any services rendered by Nigeria Police Force, it goes to a central port, Nigeria operates TSA Tingle treasury account (TSA) so that we will able to monitor what they want to do, so that is why the federal government has established TSA for all of us in Nigeria if at all there is need for you to pay for services rendered by anybody it must be official.
"I have charged Nigerians to always tackle our men, some of them who are deviant and want to go out of their ways who are not professional enough, who are not into our ethical consideration of our job and engagement to report all what they do to us.
"When a policeman is demanding money to do anything for you, you too ask for a receipt, if that man cannot give you any receipt, cannot issue out any receipt to you for any payment you have made as a Nigerian please do not pay, for those who collect money on the road we have said it on several occasions that if a policeman is demanding from money on the road you need to ask certain questions in as much that we are not encouraging you to take up a fight with any armed policeman but you can be civil about it and ask certain questions that will make us liberates ourselves from the hands of some of these men who are out there and denting the image of the force.
"We kick against corruption, we kick against bribery and IGP has made it clear, don't drop IGP's name, some of them on the road will tell you we are making money, and oga at the top, oga in Abuja is taking his own share nobody is taken share from anybody IGP has said it clearly, don't bring gift to me to the commissioner of police and their AIG's don't bring any money to me I don't need your money."

Emefiele allegedly operated 593 illegal foreign accounts in U.S., UK and China — CBN Investigator.
Former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Godwin Emefiele, is alleged to have operated 593 illegal bank accounts in the United States, United Kingdom, and China, totaling billions of naira.
The revelation, made by Special Investigator Jim Obaze, indicates unauthorized transactions amounting to £543,482,213 in the UK alone.
Emefiele, currently held in Kuje Custodial Centre for N1.2 billion procurement fraud, faces additional charges related to the CBN naira redesign policy. It is reported that he could be prosecuted, along with former President Buhari's aide Tunde Sabiu and 12 CBN directors, for the illegal issuance of currency.
The investigation reveals that the naira redesign initiative was undertaken without proper approval, raising questions about transparency and adherence to legal procedures. The report suggests that Emefiele contracted the redesign to a UK-based company, De La Rue, for £205,000.
President Bola Tinubu's proposal for a military intervention to restore democratic rule in Niger Republic has been rejected by the senate.
This is coming after the Nigerian leader who is also the Chairman of regional bloc, Economic Community of West Africa (ECOWAS) wrote the national assembly on Friday, August 4, seeking the lawmakers' support for the implementation of Resolutions of ECOWAS on the political situation in Niger Republic.
After two-hour deliberation behind closed doors on Saturday, August 5, the Senate advised President Tinubu against using military actions to force the coupists out of power.
Tinubu was advised to adopt diplomacy in addressing the toppling of democractic government Niger Republic. Announcing that they will be meeting the Nigerian leader over their resolution, Senate President Godswill Akpabio said;
“The Senate commends President Ahmed Bola Tinubu and other Heads of States and Governments of the ECOWAS for their prompt response and the position taken on the unfortunate development in Niger Republic.
“The Senate recognises the fact that President Tinubu by virtue of his correspondence has not asked for the approval of this Senate to go to war as being erroneously suggested in some quarters.
“Rather, the President and Commander in chief had ‘wished to respectively solicit the support of the National assembly in the successful implementation of the ECOWAS resolutions as outlined in the said communication’.
“The Senate calls on the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as chairman of ECOWAS to further encourage other leaders of ECOWAS to strengthen the political and diplomatic options and other means with which to resolve the political impasse in Niger Republic.
“The National Assembly called on ECOWAS leadership under President Tinubu to resolve the political situation in Niger and return the country to democratic governance in the nearest future.
“The leadership of the senate is mandated to further engage the President and Commander in Chief on behalf of the senate and the national Assembly on how best to resolve the issue in view of the hitherto existing cordial relationship between Niger and Nigeria.“

BREAKING: Protesters Pull Down National Assembly Gate In Abuja, Force Their Way Into Premises
Niger army general declares himself country’s new leader
The Niger general who staged a coup on Friday declared himself the new leader of the jihadist-hit African nation and warned that any foreign military intervention would lead to chaos.
General Abdourahamane Tchiani, head of the Presidential Guard since 2011, appeared on state television, saying he was the “president of the National Council for the Safeguard of the Homeland”.
The general, who is in his 50s and had previously kept out of public life, presented the coup as a response to “the degradation of the security situation” linked to jihadist bloodshed.
He questioned “the sense and scope of a security approach to the fight against terrorism which excludes any real collaboration with Burkina Faso and Mali” — neighbours which face similar threats.
But the putschists, who have faced international condemnation for taking power from a democratically elected president, also warned of “the consequences that will flow from any foreign military intervention”.
On the third day since President Mohamed Bazoum was detained, former colonial master France demanded the restoration of the government, saying it “does not recognise” the putschists, and calling Bazoum the “sole president”.
The UN Security Council said in a statement late Friday that it “condemned the efforts to unconstitutionally change the legitimate government” in the country.
And US Secretary of State Antony Blinken offered Bazoum Washington’s “unflagging” support and warned those detaining him that “hundreds of millions of dollars of assistance” was at risk, according to the State Department.
“Secretary Blinken underscored that the United States will continue to work to ensure the full restoration of constitutional order and democratic rule in Niger,” department spokesperson Matthew Miller said in a statement.
Washington had previously warned it may “cease security and other cooperation”, although its approximately 1,000 troops stationed in the country will stay in place for now.
West African leaders will meet Sunday in the Nigerian capital Abuja to discuss the coup, President Bola Tinubu said.
“ECOWAS and the international community would do everything to defend democracy and ensure democratic governance continues to take firm root in the region,” Tinubu, who is also the chairman of the Economic Community of West African States regional bloc, said in a statement.
The European Union threatened to cut aid to Niamey after what it said was a “serious attack on stability and democracy”.
Meanwhile, two deputy directors of Bazoum’s cabinet, Daouda Takoubakoye and Oumar Moussa, also hit back, calling Tchiani’s statement “lies” and accusing the general and the Presidential Guard of having staged the coup for “personal gains”.
Sources close to Bazoum said the deposed leader had been considering replacing Tchiani after their relations soured, a decision which had been due to be made at a cabinet meeting on July 24.
Bazoum and his family have been confined since Wednesday morning to their residence at the presidential palace located within the 700-strong Presidential Guard’s military camp.
He is said to be in good health and has been able to talk by telephone to other heads of state.
– ‘Risk’ to human rights –
The Guard chiefs who staged the coup had won broad army support by Thursday.
Armed forces chief General Abdou Sidikou Issa swung his weight behind the putsch, saying it had occurred “in order to avoid a deadly confrontation”.
The latest target of a coup in Africa’s turbulent Sahel, Bazoum has tried to stand his ground.
French Foreign Minister Catherine Colonna had seemed to hold out hope that he was not done yet.
“If you hear me talking about an attempted coup, it’s because we don’t consider things final,” she said. “There is still a way out if those responsible listen to the international community.”
France, which has 1,500 soldiers in Niger, would support sanctions, she added.
French President Emmanuel Macron will chair a defence meeting on the coup on Saturday, the presidency said.
“This coup is completely illegitimate and profoundly dangerous, for Nigeriens, for Niger and for the whole region,” Macron said during a visit to Papua New Guinea on Friday, while also calling for Bazoum’s release and “the restoration of constitutional order”.
– Pro-coup demonstrations –
Landlocked Niger is one of the world’s poorest nations.
Since gaining independence in 1960, it has seen four coups as well as numerous other attempts — including two previously against Bazoum.
The 63-year-old is one of a dwindling group of elected presidents and pro-Western leaders in the Sahel, where a jihadist insurgency has triggered coups in Mali and Burkina Faso.
Their juntas have forced out French troops, and Mali’s ruling military has woven a close alliance with Russia.
“What happened in Niger is nothing more than the struggle of the people of Niger against colonisers, who tried to impose their own rules of life,” the boss of Russia’s Wagner group, Yevgeny Prigozhin, said Thursday in a message shared by a body linked to the mercenary organisation.
Bazoum took office after elections two years ago, in Niger’s first peaceful transfer of power since independence.
The country of 26 million people is two-thirds desert and frequently ranks at the bottom of the UN’s Human Development Index.

Nyesom Wike And Sim Fubara, Rivers State Governor-elect ‘Fight Dirty’
Just 10 days to the May 29, 2023 inauguration, the outgoing governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike and his political son, and current Governor-elect of the state, Sim Fubara have fallen out, News Direct has learned.
According to reports from Rivers State, the rift is as a result of disagreement between the duo on the Party’s (People’s Democratic Party) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar.
A source told AIF Media in Port Harcourt that Wike is fuming that Fubara invited Atiku and other PDP leaders considered to be his enemies to the May 29 inauguration at Portharcourt without his consent.
The source said that when confronted, Fubara told his close aides that he wouldn’t want to inherit the enemies of the outgoing governor and wouldn’t want to start fighting political wars early in his administration.
He opted for reconciliation with the party leaders both at the state and national, which didn’t go down well with the Port Harcourt hit man.
This has created a huge crack between the two and we were told that Wike is withholding release of funds for the inauguration.
The political battle between Wike and Fubara will be interesting.
Let's keep our fingers crossed.

2023 Elections Broke A Lot Of Trust – Okonjo-Iweala
The former Minister of finance and current Director-General of the World Trade Organisation (WTO), Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala has said a lot of trust was broken following the conduct of the 2023 general elections.
Okonjo-Iweala made this known on Monday at an induction ceremony organised for elected governors in Abuja, the nation’s capital.
Ngozi said no government can achieve growth and progress without first of all building trust, adding that there cannot be nation-building without the citizens trusting their political leaders.
She said: “If taking the wider global context into account is one prerequisite for successful nation-building, another prerequisite is trust and a sense of common purpose.
“I remain convinced that a better future is within our collective grasp. But to move ahead and seize it, we will need political and business leaders at the state and national levels to form a compact in pursuit of pro-growth and pro-development policies.
“We ought to be seeking to double our growth rate and sustain that higher growth until we attain upper middle-income status. We can also aim to double Nigeria’s share of world trade from 0.33% to 0.66% within a decade. To build such a compact, we need trust.
