BREAKING: Police, others prevent EFCC from arresting Yahaya Bello

Officers of the Nigeria Police Force and some armed men dressed in black with the inscription “Special Forces”, are preventing operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission from arresting embattled former Governor of Kogi State, Yahaya Bello at his Abuja residence.

EFCC operatives had stormed Bello’s home on Benghazi Street, Wuse Zone 4, Abuja, at about 9:30 am on Wednesday.

However, our correspondent keenly observed how EFCC operatives were prevented by some policemen and other armed men guarding the ex-governor, from entering the house.

Earlier, the Governor of Kogi State, Usman Ododo, visited the embattled former governor amidst a heavy security crackdown on the latter’s Abuja home.

As of press time, our correspondent could not independently confirm the reason behind the siege on Bello’s home as the spokesperson for the EFCC, Dele Oyewale, did not respond to inquiries concerning the development.

However, the EFCC had earlier dragged Yahaya Bello, his nephew Ali, one Dauda Sulaiman, and Abdulsalam Hudu before Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court, Abuja, in an amended charge in March 2024 over an alleged N84bn money laundering

10 safety tips for boat rides

Water transportation, although a vital means of commuting, comes with its risks.

1. Wear life jackets: Always wear a properly fitting life jacket when onboard a boat. Ensure that there are enough life jackets for all passengers.

2. Check weather conditions: Before setting off, check weather forecasts to avoid sailing in rough or dangerous conditions that could jeopardise safety.

3. Follow safety instructions: Listen attentively to the boat operator or captain’s safety instructions and adhere to them diligently. Familiarise yourself with emergency procedures and the location of safety equipment onboard.

4. Avoid overloading: Do not exceed the boat’s weight capacity or passenger limit. Overloading can lead to instability and increase the risk of accidents.

5. Ensure proper boat maintenance: Regularly maintain the boat, including checking navigation lights, signaling devices, and emergency equipment like fire extinguishers and flares.

6. Inform others: Let someone know your boating plans, including your route and estimated return time. This information can be crucial in case of an emergency.

7. Be mindful of water conditions: Stay aware of water currents, tides, and potential hazards such as rocks or shallow areas. Navigate at safe speeds and exercise caution near shorelines.

8. Monitor fuel levels: Always carry sufficient fuel for your trip and monitor fuel levels regularly. Running out of fuel in open water can be hazardous.

9. Ensure children’s safety: Ensure that children wear life jackets and are supervised by adults at all times while onboard. Also, educate them about basic boating safety rules.

10. Avoid alcohol and intoxicants: It’s crucial to refrain from consuming alcohol or other intoxicants before or during boat rides. Being sober enables you to make sound decisions and stay alert to potential dangers.

Natural gas vital to driving economic growth – NNPCL

The Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, Mr Mele Kyari, has reiterated the crucial role of natural gas in fuelling economic growth and industrial development.

Kyari spoke Wednesday at the public presentation of a book, ‘The Rise of Gas: From Gaslink to the Decade of Gas’, authored by Charles Osezua.

The GCEO highlighted gas’ global acceptance as a crucial energy source that sustains economic growth and drives industrial activities.

Represented by the company’s Head of Relationship and Stakeholder Management, Mrs Oluwakemi Olumuyiwa, Kyari also emphasised the importance of documenting Nigeria’s gas sector.

He underscored the significance of prioritising natural gas production and supply, particularly in the context of geopolitical dynamics and energy security in the global economy.

Tariff hike: FG plans N1.5tn savings, 2.5m meter installations

The Federal Government has raised the amount that it would save this year following the recent hike in electricity tariff for Band A customers to N1.5tn.

It also stated that about 2.5 million meters would be installed this year in a bid to bridge the metering gap across the country and ensure consumers pay the right amount for electricity.

On April 2, 2024, the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, stated that the move by government to withdraw electricity subsidy from 15 per cent of power consumers in Nigeria would save the government about N1.1tn annually.

Onanuga had said the President Bola Tinubu-led administration was poised to allow the price hike in electricity given its N450bn budget for energy subsidies in 2024. ⁣

But in a document on issues around the tariff hike, from the Federal Ministry of Power on Wednesday, which was made available by the media aide to the power minister, Bolaji Tunji, the government said it would save N1.5tn with the recent tariff adjustment.

Nnamdi Kanu lawyers threaten to boycott court over alleged injustice

Members of the legal team of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, have warned that they may boycott court proceedings due to perceived injustice against their client.

They stated that they would not participate in the proceedings if the IPOB leader’s right to a fair trial was not respected by the Department of State Services.

The IPOB leader is being charged with treason felony and terrorism and has been in the DSS custody since 2021.

He had applied to be granted bail based on health grounds and to enable him to prepare for trial, but his application was rejected by Justice Binta Nyako of the Federal High Court in Abuja.

Three Of My Six Siblings And I Went Blind In Secondary School - Unical Graduate | Punch0.00 / 0.00

Nyako instead promised to grant an accelerated hearing in the matter.

Kanu’s trial is expected to commence on April 17, 2024.

But Kanu’s legal team led by Alloy Ejimakor has been addressing journalists on the difficulty they have been facing preparing the IPOB leader for trial.

On April 9, 2024, during a press conference in Abuja, Ejimakor accused the DSS of denying them access to their client.

He also accused the service of constantly seizing every legal document they took to the DSS facility to prepare Kanu for trial.

At another press conference in Abuja on Wednesday, Ejimakor said they would pull out of the trial should the DSS continue to frustrate their efforts to prepare Kanu for his trial.

Ejimakor claimed that the actions of the DSS arr denying the IPOB leader his right to a fair trial.

He said the legal team would not be part of such a process should it continue.
