MORE FROM ONYEKA ONWENU’S FUNERAL

Yesterday, August 30, 2024, marks the final farewell to the legendary Onyeka Onwenu, affectionately known as the 'Elegant Stallion'. Exactly one month ago, on July 30, 2024, she departed this life suddenly at the age of 72, at Reddington Hospital in Ikeja. After collapsing at an event honoring the 80th birthday celebration of, Dr. Stella Okoli, Managing Director of Emzor Pharmaceuticals.

Her funeral service was held at the Fountain of Life Church in Ilupeju, Lagos, followed by a private burial at a private vault in Ikoyi, Lagos. As we bid her a final goodbye, we remember her remarkable life, legacy, and the indelible mark she left on our hearts.

Onyeka Onwenu, was a Nigerian entertainment legend, celebrated singer, songwriter, actress, and politician, whose immense contributions to the music industry and beyond inspired generations. With an illustrious career spanning over four decades, she was renowned for her powerful, soulful voice, electrifying stage presence, and timeless hits like "You And I", "Iyogogo", "Ekwe", and "One Love." Onyeka earned numerous awards and accolades, cementing her status as a beloved and respected icon in Nigeria and beyond.

In a turn of events, some of the mourners who gathered to bid farewell to Onyeka Onwenu today were also present at her final performance, just a month ago, at the 80th birthday celebration of Dr. Stella Okoli, Managing Director of Emzor Pharmaceuticals. It's a striking coincidence that some of the same individuals who had celebrated with her, enjoying her music and energy, were now gathered to pay their last respects.

For the 70s babies who grew up in the 80s, her music was a timeless treasure that was cherished and still hold dear.

Onyeka Onwenu is survived by her two sons and a host of family members and friends.

CANADA BARS VISITOR VISA HOLDERS FROM APPLYING FOR WORK PERMITS.

Canada has barred holders of visitor visa from applying for a work permit within the country.
Disclosing this in a statement on Wednesday, the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) said the directive is with immediate effect.
"While the temporary policy was set to expire on February 28, 2025, IRCC is ending the policy as part of our overall efforts to recalibrate the number of temporary residents in Canada and preserve the integrity of the immigration system," the statement read.

Canada has ended its temporary policy that allowed visitor visa holders to apply for work permits from within the country. The policy, introduced in August 2020, was initially set to expire on February 28, 2025, but has been terminated early as part of efforts to "recalibrate the number of temporary residents in Canada and preserve the integrity of the immigration system".

Eligibility Requirements for Work Permit
To apply for a work permit, you must :
- Prove that you will leave Canada when your work permit expires
- Show that you have enough money to take care of yourself and your family members during your stay in Canada and to return home
- Obey the law and have no record of criminal activity
- Not be a danger to Canada’s security
- Be in good health and have a medical exam, if needed
- Not plan to work for an employer listed with the status “ineligible” on the list of employers who failed to comply with the conditions
- Not plan to work for an employer who, on a regular basis, offers st******se, erotic dance, es**rt services or erotic massages
- Give the officer any other documents they ask for to prove you can enter the country

Applying for Work Permit
You need to apply online for a work permit. You can apply from outside Canada, or from inside Canada if you meet specific requirements ². You can also apply at a port of entry if you meet certain conditions .

Note: Applications submitted under the terminated policy before August 28 will continue to be processed.

DG SSS SET TO RESIGN AS TINUBU NAMES REPLACEMENT

The director-general of the State Security Service, Yusuf Bichi, has prepared to tender his resignation to President Bola Tinubu on Monday.

Insiders at the Yellow House told DAILY NIGERIAN that the outgoing DG returned to the office this afternoon and announced the development to his close aides.

Mr Bichi was appointed by President Muhammadu Buhari on September 14, 2018 to replace Matthew Seiyefa, who served in acting capacity.

On Saturday, his National Intelligence Agency, counterpart, Ahmed Rufai Abubakar, tendered his resignation to the president.

World oldest person, Maria Branyas Morera (USA/Spain), passed away on the 19th of August 2024. Her death was confirmed by the Gerontology Research Group.

Aged 117 years 168 days, she was the eighth-oldest person (with a verifiable age) in history.
Maria passed away peacefully at her nursing home residence in Catalonia, Spain, where she resided for the past two decades.

EFCC DETAINS NAHCON CHAIR OVER ALLEGED DIVERSION OF 90BILLION NAIRA HAJJ SUBSIDY

The Executive Chairman of the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria, Jalal Arabi, and the commission’s secretary, Abdullahi Kontagora, are currently in the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission over the alleged mismanagement of the N90bn 2024 Hajj subsidy.

In a document sighted by our correspondent on Wednesday, the anti-graft agency said, “A total of SR314,098 was recovered,” from the NAHCON chairman and other ranking officials.

The EFCC said its investigation revealed that from the N90bn Hajj subsidy, Arabi, fraudulently overpaid himself and others the necessary operational cost.

Also according to the document, the approved 2024 Hajj operational cost for the Chairman/CEO Commissioners, Secretary and Directors/Chief of Staff in the 2024 budget are stipulated as $4,250, $12,750, $3,825 and $15,300, respectively.

The EFCC, however, alleged that: “The chairman fraudulently overpaid himself, the commissioners, secretary and directors for the 2024 hajj operational cost.

“The chairman was entitled to SR15,929 but he got SR50,000; three commissioners who were meant to get SR 15,929 each received SR 40,000 each. The secretary got SR 30,000 instead of SR14,336. Directors/Chief of Staff received SR 30,000 instead of the SR2,550 they were entitled to. The total of SR314,098 were recovered from all of them.”

Also, last week Wednesday, some top officials of the Hajj commission were arrested by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission over alleged mismanagement or diversion of the N90bn subsidy.

On Wednesday, a source in the EFCC told our correspondent that the NAHCON Chairman was taken in again on Wednesday for questioning and was detained.

“The Secretary and Chairman of the commission are in our custody and are facing serious interrogations on the N90bn subsidy, among other allegations,” the source said on condition of anonymity because they could not speak officially.

Nigerian authorities have arrested Bashir for alleged treason, gųn-running and other crimes. Hadeja who is known for money laundering and other illegal activities was detained following reports of smuggling weapons and stolen gold from Libya.

He is accused of aiding terrorism, blackmailing officials and sponsoring violence including the attacks in Jigwa during the just ended protest in Nigeria.

He was allegedly found with incriminating documents including an international passport belonging to Republic of Vanuatu and gold bars believed to have been stolen from Libyan Central Bank.

24-HOUR CURFEW IMPOSED ON KADUNA AND ZARIA

The Kaduna State Government has imposed a 24-hour curfew on Kaduna metropolis and Zaria town with immediate effect.

The state's security council took the measure after reviewing the ongoing , which has been hijacked by criminals and also to prevent a breakdown in law and order.

The Overseeing Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs Samuel Aruwan says there is ample evidence showing that criminal elements have hijacked the protest, leading to looting and the destruction of both private and public property.
