: The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has commenced a four-week nationwide strike.

ASUU announced the strike on Monday after a long meeting that started on Sunday evening at the University of Lagos (UNILAG).

ASUU president Emmanuel Victor Osodeke said the industrial action is “comprehensive and total”.

Osodeke earlier lamented that the union’s demands on the revitalization of public universities, earned academic allowances, University Transparency Accountability Solution (UTAS) promotion arrears, renegotiation of 2009 ASUU-FGN agreement, and inconsistencies in Integrated Payroll and Personnel information system (IPPIS) payments have been neglected after meetings with Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr. Chris Ngige.

The union had also earlier issued a three-week ultimatum to the Nigerian government, nudging it to address all pending issues to avert another round of strike.

Checks showed that a number of universities already preparing for semester examinations are apprehensive. Students are particularly jittery, expressing fears that they may be forced to go home if ASUU makes good its threat to down tools.

Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA), for instance, is billed to commence first semester examinations by the end of this month.

Also, UNILAG students were preparing to start their examinations after hosting the National University Games Association (NUGA) in March.

The latest strike action is a continuation of a nine-month strike that grounded academic activities 2020 for the same reasons.
The lecturers threatened to embark on another round of industrial action following the alleged “government’s unfaithfulness” in the implementation of the Memorandum of Action it signed.

President Muhammadu Buhari recently assured Nigerians that his administration would honour the agreements with ASUU to prevent lecturers downing tools in universities.

Buhari said the government “is committed to this engagement and dialogue, and I urge them to stay the course towards a joint resolution in the best interest of our children and nation.”

Sardauna’s grandson, Hassan Danbaba, is dead

Alhaji Hassan Danbaba The grandson to late Sir Ahmadu Bello, the Sardauna of Sokoto and Premier of defunct Northern Nigeria, Alhaji Hassan Danbaba, slumped and died on Saturday in Kaduna.

Danbaba was the traditional title holder of Magajin Garin Sokoto.

According to a source, the Kaduna state government prepared for the copse was flown to Sokoto where he was buried in the ancestral Hubbare, a royal compound that has a cemetery specially preserved for legendary Sheikh Othman Danfodio and his progenies.

The source said late Danbaba, was not only one of the kingmakers in Sokoto Caliphate, he was the most Influential kingmakers, as he was the head of Sokoto kingmakers.

“He was in Kaduna to condole with former National Security Adviser and former Defence Minister, Lt. General Aliyu Gusau (rtd), who recently lost his elder brother. On arrival, and after the condolence visit, Danbaba checked into his hotel, Stonehedge, in Kaduna.

“Just before he slumped in the Hotel room and died at about 11.30am, he had dressed up, preparatory to meeting General Gusau in his house for two of them to head back to Abuja.

“As he slumped, his aides rushed him to the 44 Army Reference Hospital, Kaduna for medical attention but he was declared dead on arrival.

“Governor of Kaduna state, Nasir el-Rufai, ordered that his body be evacuated to Sir Kashim Ibrahim Government House, for an airlift to Sokoto for funeral. He will be buried at a cemetery – Hubbaren Shehu – reserved for Sokoto royal leaders.

“A grandson of the late revered Premier of Northern Nigeria, Sir Ahmadu Bello, the Sarduana of Sokoto, his mother, A’ishatu, the eldest daughter of the late premier, died in Dubai in 2021. : Kaduna Environmental Protection Authority (KEPA) begins door-to-door refuse collection.

KEPA said, the agency had commenced door-to-door refuse evacuation within the metropolis.

General Manager of KEPA, Maimunatu Abubakar, who made this known today in an interview with news men, in Kaduna, said the initiative would ensure a cleaner and healthier state.

Abubakar said the program began with the distribution of bills generated to hotels, schools, hospitals, and other business premises across the metropolis.

She added that the first phase of refuse evacuation would start with business premises due to the high volume of waste generated daily in those places.

According to her, the agency is working on its automated machines for mass generation of bills for distribution to households.

“Presently, we are able to produce 60 bills a day while working on our software to generate over 15, 000 bills per day for mass distribution,” she said.

Abubakar said that when in full operation, dumping of waste along major roads would not be condoned and advices residents to comply.

on Fuel Scarcity: The Federal Government of Nigeria has vowed to investigate importation of adulterated fuel.

Minister of State for Petroleum, Timipre Sylva said the FG is considering the situation of those whose vehicles must have been damaged by the adulterated fuel.

The Federal Government says it will investigate the supply of adulterated petroleum imported into the country.

The Minister of State for Petroleum, Timipre Sylva made this known on Wednesday, February 9, 2022, at a media briefing after the Federal Executive Council meeting in the State House.

The minister said he is not in a position to disclose the identities of the companies, but the issue is being tackled.

“There will be a major investigation to unravel everything. We need to get to the bottom of it before we can come back to tell you what will happen to the culprits,” he said.

Sylva also said the government is considering the situation of those whose vehicles must have been damaged by the adulterated fuel.

“We know that some people’s vehicles must have been damaged, that is also going to the taken into consideration in dealing with the situation, he said.

You’ll recall that there have been concerns since last weekend over fuel scarcity as a result of adulterated petrol in circulation.

The adulterated fuel, which is outside the official specification of Nigeria’s petrol has a high content of methanol and ethanol.
