NGO Condemns Barbaric Killings of Travelers in Edo State, Demands Swift Justice

Abdullahi Abubakar Ladan
Kaduna, Nigeria - 31 March, 2025

The Elevators Initiative for Community Peace and Development has strongly condemned the recent brutal killings of Northern travelers in Edo State, describing the act as "barbaric, inhumane, and a direct attack on Nigeria’s unity."

In a press statement signed by its Acting Executive Director, Capt. Mansur Kurugu, the group called for immediate government action to ensure justice, prevent further violence, and protect the rights of all Nigerians, regardless of ethnicity or religion.

"Every Nigerian has the right to safety and security within their own country. There is no justification—cultural, religious, or political—for the brutal murder and burning of fellow human beings based solely on their identity," Kurugu stated.

The group warned that such violence risks plunging Nigeria into ethno-religious conflicts with long-lasting consequences. While commending authorities for arresting some suspects, the Initiative urged the Federal and Edo State Governments to:

1. Enhance security measures to prevent future attacks.
2. Conduct a transparent investigation, prosecute perpetrators, and disclose their motives.
3. Encourage Edo State leaders to publicly condemn the killings and engage Northern communities in peacebuilding efforts.
4. Compensate victims' families and ensure their inclusion in the justice process.
5. Avoid ethnic profiling, labeling the killers as criminals rather than representatives of any community.
6. Ensure peaceful Eid-el-Fitr celebrations by collaborating with Muslim leaders to promote calm.

"We reject these barbaric acts of terror—they are a stain on our humanity," Kurugu emphasized. "Jungle justice fuels violence, but transparent justice builds trust. The government must act decisively to ensure justice and peace."

The Elevators Initiative urged Nigerians to remain united, emphasizing that the actions of criminals must not define the nation’s values of justice, fairness, and coexistence.

Breaking News: Nasir El-Rufai Resigns from APC, Joins SDP

By Abdullahi Abubakar Ladan
March 10, 2025

In a major political shakeup, former Kaduna State Governor and founding member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai, has resigned from the ruling party and defected to the Social Democratic Party (SDP).

In a statement released today, El-Rufai expressed his disappointment with the current leadership of the APC, stating that the party has strayed from the progressive values it was founded upon. He cited a lack of internal democracy, disregard for party members, and a failure to address critical issues as reasons for his departure.

El-Rufai, who played a key role in the APC's electoral victories in 2015, 2019, and 2023, emphasized that his decision followed extensive consultations with mentors, colleagues, and supporters across the country. He announced his intention to work with other opposition leaders to build a strong, unified platform capable of challenging the APC in future elections.

"I have now decided to join the Social Democratic Party (SDP) and adopt it as the platform for our future political engagements and activities," El-Rufai declared. He called on his supporters and all Nigerians concerned about the country's future to join him in the SDP.

This move is expected to have significant implications for Nigeria's political landscape, particularly as the 2027 general elections approach. Analysts suggest that El-Rufai's defection could galvanize opposition forces and reshape the dynamics of Nigerian politics.

The APC has yet to issue an official response to El-Rufai's resignation and defection.

This is a developing story. Stay tuned for updates.

Governor Uba Sani has received over 22 political heavyweights from the opposition parties and their supporters, at the All Progressives Party(APC) zonal rally which held at Kafanchan on Friday.

The event which held New Choice Hall, was witnessed by thousands of APC supporters from Southern Kaduna and political stalwarts from across the state, who passed a vote of confidence on the Uba Sani administration.

The decampees comprised serving and former federal legislators, as well as lawmakers from Kaduna State House of Assembly, former Council Chairmen, State party chairmen and flagbearers of opposition parties.

Those who left the Peoples Democratic Party(PDP) include Sen Danjuma Laar, the immediate past senator representing zone 3, Godfrey Ali Gaiya, a former House of Representatives member and Ado Dogo Audu, three-time member of the House of Representatives.

The representative of Zangon Kataf/Jaba Federal Constituency, Amos Gwamna Magaji and Donatus K Mathew, another member of the House of Representatives, representing Kaura federal constituency, also defected to APC.

State legislators like Henry Marah Zakarieh, representing Jaba constituency, Samuel Kambai koza from Zango constituency and Barrister Emmanuel Kantiok of Zonkwa constituency have also cross carpeted to APC.

Former Council Chairman of Jemaa Local Government, Mikiah Tokwak, ex Vice Chairman Sunday Baba and ex Chairman of Kauru Local Government, Paul Wani are now in APC.

Similarly, former PDP Chairman in Kagarko Local Government, Shehu Tafarke, ex NNPP state Chairman Ben Kure and his successor, Nuhu Audu, including the state chairman of Labour Party Isah Ciroma are now APC members.

Speaking at the ceremony, Governor Uba Sani explained that APC is now taking over Southern Kaduna which used to the political enclave of PDP, because his administration is anchored on justice.

According to the Governor, he is abiding to the oath of his office by being just to every segment of Kaduna State, irrespective of party affiliation or ethno-religious background.

Governor Uba Sani emphasised that after election, politics should take the back seat while governance takes the centre stage, adding that that is the hallmark of leadership.

The Governor said that the focus of his administration is to bring about peaceful coexistence in order to achieve even development, arguing that if there is no peace there will be no development.

He said that the President Bola Tinubu is pleased with what is happening in Kaduna State, as he wants the state to be a model of peaceful coexistence and that is why he has been supporting it.

Governor Uba Sani disclosed that President Tinubu told him three days ago, that the Kaduna Light Rail project and the Kwoi-Kafanchan road are in the 2025 budget.

KADUNA APC CALLS FOR THOROUGH INVESTIGATION INTO SEN. LAWAL ADAMU USMAN’S FALSE ASSASSINATION CLAIMS

The attention of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Kaduna State, has been drawn to a baseless and defamatory press release issued by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Kaduna State, accusing the APC of complicity in an alleged assassination attempt on Senator Lawal Adamu Usman.

We categorically condemn this unfounded accusation as both false and absurd. Sadly, the PDP in Kaduna State has developed a troubling reputation for issuing ill-conceived and patently false statements, undermining the seriousness of public discourse. This reckless behavior highlights the party’s deteriorating standards, with critical matters being handled without due diligence or proper scrutiny.

The APC takes note of the statement released by the Kaduna Police Command, which revealed that Senator Lawal Adamu Usman has neither filed a formal complaint nor cooperated with ongoing investigations. Despite repeated attempts by the police to reach him, he remains unresponsive. It is, therefore, baffling how the PDP arrived at its baseless conclusion implicating the APC in this alleged incident.

We call on Senator Usman and the PDP to cooperate fully with the police investigation. Failure to do so would lend credence to suspicions that the alleged assassination attempt is nothing more than a fabrication aimed at maligning the APC, creating unnecessary tension, and derailing the peace and progress currently enjoyed in Kaduna State.

The APC strongly suspects that certain conflict entrepreneurs are using the PDP to disrupt the remarkable strides achieved under the peace initiatives of Senator Uba Sani’s people-focused and inclusive administration. Let it be clear: these efforts will not succeed. Kaduna State remains on a path of growth and stability, and no amount of false narratives or orchestrated incidents will derail this progress.

We urge the PDP to desist from further tarnishing its reputation with unverified claims and unfounded propaganda. Instead, it should strive to fulfill its role as a constructive opposition party. Meanwhile, the APC remains firmly focused on delivering the dividends of democracy to the good people of Kaduna State in an atmosphere of peace and stability.

As our governor, Senator Uba Sani, has declared, 2025 is our Year of Fulfillment. We will not be distracted by baseless allegations or needless provocations.

Yahaya Baba Pate

On Gov. Uba Sani’s Second Christmas Carol visit
December 23, 2024

By Jabir T Usman Blueprint newspaper

Governor Uba Sani’s second consecutive visit to the ECWA Church Narayi on Sunday, December 22, 2024, for the annual Christmas Carol marks a significant milestone in fostering unity and interfaith understanding in Kaduna state. His maiden visit in 2023, widely celebrated as a bold move to promote tolerance and peaceful coexistence, set the tone for this year’s symbolic event. Accompanied by a high powered delegation, the governor once again demonstrated his commitment to bridging divides and strengthening communal bonds.

The governor’s presence at this cherished Christian celebration was not just a replay of his previous visit but a testament to his genuine commitment to the principles of reconciliation and respect for all religions. In a state often marked by ethnic and religious tensions, this gesture goes a long way in dispelling doubts about the authenticity of his interfaith outreach efforts. Governor Sani’s consistency underscores a vision for Kaduna that thrives on inclusivity and shared humanity.

Last year’s visit garnered widespread acclaim. I wrote an article captioned “Gov. Uba Sani’s surprised Christmas Carol visit; in notable national dailies like Blueprint and Daily Trust. It was described as a “symbol of unity, reconciliation, tolerance, peace, and interfaith dialogue.” This year’s return affirms that his approach to leadership is not performative but deeply rooted in a vision of sustained dialogue and mutual respect.

Governor Sani was joined this year by Hon. Barr. Yusuf Hamisu Mairago, his trusted ally who accompanied him last year, alongside a new entourage of Southern Kaduna leaders. Among them were Mr. Jerry Adams, the Executive Chairman of Kaduna Inland Revenue Services (KADIRS), and Barr. James Kanyip, the recently appointed Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs. Their presence reflected a deliberate attempt to showcase diversity within the leadership circle and foster representation from various regions of Kaduna.

The Christmas Carol itself, a cherished tradition among Christians, provided a spiritual and cultural backdrop for the governor’s outreach. Hymns of joy, prayers for peace, and messages of goodwill filled the church, creating an atmosphere of hope and reflection. Governor Sani’s participation in the programme highlighted his recognition of the importance of religious traditions in shaping societal values and fostering harmony.

Governor Uba Sani during his address to the congregation, emphasised the shared values of love, compassion, and forgiveness that underpin both Christianity and Islam. He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to protecting the rights of all citizens, regardless of their religious affiliation. “We are one people, bound by our shared humanity,” he declared, drawing applause from the audience.

Impressively, the church leadership expressed gratitude for the governor’s presence, describing it as a gesture of goodwill that would resonate for years to come. The officiating pastor, noted that Governor Sani’s visit reinforced the message of Christmas as a season of love and reconciliation. We see in you a leader who values peace and cherishes diversity, he said, offering prayers for the governor’s continued wisdom and strength is of great importance because of his impartial treatment in governance.

This year’s visit, much like the previous one, has sparked conversations across Kaduna about the importance of interfaith dialogue in building a cohesive society. Social media platforms buzzed with praise for the governor’s consistency and calls for other leaders to emulate his approach to inclusive governance.

Critics who initially dismissed last year’s visit as mere political theatrics now find themselves reconsidering their stance. Governor Sani’s unwavering commitment to this tradition suggests that his actions are driven by a genuine desire to foster unity rather than opportunism.

As the Christmas season unfolds, the governor’s visit serves as a reminder of the values that bind us together – kindness, understanding, and a commitment to the common good. It sets a powerful precedent for future leaders, emphasising the importance of humility and openness in leadership.

Governor Uba Sani’s second Christmas Carol visit is more than a political gesture; it is a declaration of hope for a Kaduna state where diversity is celebrated and differences are embraced. His actions continue to inspire confidence in his vision for a peaceful and prosperous society.

In a time when the world is grappling with division and discord, such acts of unity serve as a beacon of hope. For Governor Sani, the Christmas Carol visit is not just an event it is a tradition in the making, a legacy of peace that will outlast his tenure in office.

As the congregation dispersed with hearts uplifted and spirits renewed, one message was clear: Governor Uba Sani’s leadership is guided by a commitment to unity, a principle that will remain etched in the history of Kaduna state.

Governor Uba Sani Gives Kaduna Scholarship Beneficiaries Automatic Employment

In a significant move aimed at enhancing healthcare services and promoting inclusivity in education, Governor Uba Sani has announced the automatic employment of a group of newly graduated medical professionals during a courtesy visit by the Kaduna State Scholarship and Loans Board, to Sir Kashim Ibrahim House.

The graduates, led by the Executive Secretary, Professor Yahya Saleh Ibrahim, came with their parents. Among them were 20 medical doctors who completed their studies in Cuba, 14 nurses that finished from the Islamic University of Uganda, and a BSc Cybersecurity graduate from the University of Wollongong Dubai, who identifies as a person with disability.

Governor Sani’s initiative reflects his administration’s commitment to bolstering healthcare services and promoting human capital development. In his address, the Governor emphasized the importance of inclusivity, stating that “our government is dedicated to ensuring that every individual, regardless of his or her background and challenges, has the opportunity to succeed and contribute to society.”

The highlight of the visit was the Governor’s announcement, granting automatic employment to the newly graduated medical students; a move that is expected to not only enhance the state’s healthcare system but also provide job security for the young professionals. This decision was greeted with applause, especially from the graduates, who expressed their gratitude.

Mal Muhd Salisu Abdullahi Maiphysics, speaking on behalf of the parents, expressed profound appreciation to Governor Sani for his timely intervention in settling all the outstanding school fees of their wards. “Without your support, our children would not have been able to graduate. We are grateful for your commitment to their education and future,” he stated, highlighting the impact of the Governor’s actions on the students’ lives.

Governor Uba Sani's intervention is a testament to his administration’s focus on creating an all-inclusive government that prioritizes human capital development and the enhancement of the public service. As the state looks to the future, the integration of these new professionals into the workforce is expected to yield significant benefits for the community and the healthcare sector at large.

Uba Sani Commends Southern Kaduna For Being Peaceful

Governor Uba Sani has said that he is taking development to all parts of Kaduna State, in fulfilment of his pledge to run an inclusive government, anchored on equity, fairness and justice.

The Governor expressed gratitude that ‘’the people of Zone 3 have reciprocated by ensuring that peace prevails, so that there will be unhindered development.’’

Governor Uba Sani made this remark at the 2nd edition of Southern Kaduna Festival which held at Kafanchan on Saturday, where he was the Chief Host of the event.

According to him, culture plays a role in shaping identities and values, and inspiring creativity, adding that ‘’our cultural heritage is the foundation upon which we build our progress, and it is our responsibility to preserve it for future generations.’’

The Governor emphasized that ‘’our administration is committed to massive transformation of rural communities, recognizing the immense potential that lies within them.

“We believe that by empowering rural communities, we can unlock the secrets to sustainable development, economic growth, and social prosperity,’’ he further said.

Governor Uba Sani pointed out that his administration has recorded a lot of transformative projects in the 18 months of being in office ‘’that are reshaping our communities and enhancing the quality of life for our citizens.’’

The Governor recalled that the Kafanchan Township Roads ‘’were abandoned for many years, bringing untold hardship on the people of this area. Contractors have been fully mobilized and work is ongoing.’’

He disclosed that the contract sum has been reviewed downwards to N9.3 billion and Kaduna State Government has given the contractor handling the project N4 billion last week.

Governor Uba Sani further said that his administration is constructing a 22.5km Road from Gwantu through Kibam to Godogodo, a 21.95km Road from Madauchi to Kafanchan through Madakiya, including a branch to Matsirga Waterfalls, linking Jema’a to Zangon Kataf LGAs.

He said that the project has reached 70% and it will be completed in the next two months.

Governor Uba Sani said that Kaduna State Government is also re-constructing a 21.85km Pambeguwa to Kauru Road through Kahuta, linking Kubau to Kauru LGAs, which will be completed in the next two and half months.

According to the Governor, he has reached out to the Minister of Works and President Bola Tinubu for the construction of Kwoi-Jema’a road, promising that it will be awarded in the 2nd quarter of 2026.

“We have installed 200 units of All-in-One Solar Street Lights across various local governments in Zone 3, illuminating our streets and enhancing safety for all.

“Alongside these infrastructural advancements, we are prioritizing agriculture, as evidenced by our distribution of fertilisers, farm inputs and agricultural implements.

“Additionally, we have been constructing new schools and upgrading existing ones. We have also been carrying out massive distribution of educational materials to schools, ensuring that our children have the resources they need to thrive,’’ he added.

According to the Governor, “the construction of the Kaduna State Vocational and Technology Skills Acquisition City at Samaru Kataf is a testament to our commitment to empowering our youths with relevant skills for the modern economy.’’

He said that the Skills City at Samaru Kataf is about 90% completed, adding that when completed, it will graduate trainees annually with international certification.

The Governor disclosed that Sir Patrick Yakowa General Hospital, Kafanchan, will be converted to a Federal Medical Center, to serve the diverse population spanning several Local Government Areas and the neighboring states of Plateau, Nassarawa, Niger and the FCT.

“Upgrading it to a Federal Medical Centre will greatly improve healthcare accessibility, strengthen tertiary healthcare delivery, and provide opportunities for advanced medical training and research in the area,’’ he said.

Governor Uba Sani thanked the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa for initiating this process, adding that ‘’he brought it to my attention and we wasted no time in forwarding a formal request to the Honourable Minister for the conversion.’’

The Governor said that the entire healthcare sector in Southern Kaduna, like other senatorial zones, is being remolded, upgraded and equipped to standard, adding that the projects of General Hospitals in Kafanchan, Kaura, Kachia and Sanga are almost completed.

He also said that contracts have been awarded for the revitalization and upgrading of 83 Primary Healthcare Centers (PHCs) from Level 1 to Level 2 across Zone 3, adding that the four months the upgrade will be completed.

“We flagged off the distribution of essential medicines worth over N1 Billion last week, at Kachia LG. These essential drugs will be distributed free of charge to children, women and the elderly,’’ he recalled.

He further recalled that Kaduna State has emerged the best performing state in Primbary Health Care in the North West zone, by the PHC Leadership Challenge in two weeks ago.
